Shawn as I watch the second leg of this journey and I was here when you laid the first log on the old cabin I was thinking there has to be a tremendous amount of satisfaction as you do these videos. I've always watched in awe of your talent and building experience .I want to see this cabin finished but I don't want this journey to end anytime soon; the love and care you have for the out doors is phenomenal. I enjoy the conversations, building, and scenery. God bless be safe up there. Prayer for the girls, I went through it in Jan of this year.

Bass, you needn't worry! After the cabin are all the other outbuildings, plus of course the gardening, greenhouse, lumber mill (money maker later on), and gosh knows what else! [P.S. I was here too from the Beginning - I sure loved that first cabin and the outdoor kitchen and "sauna"/bathroom!]

Your old (first) cabin had a sleeping "loft". I don't know where you and the Mrs. would sleep without one in this cabin, which is only 360 sq. ft. UPDATE for BB! He plans on a bedroom off the cabin which will be 12' x 12'. So any loft would be for storage, guests?, a family member, and so on. Yeah Shawn a small loft that does make you feel hemmed in. An indoor bathroom?! Woo-hoo!

Yes, what is cozy for one person in a cabin might get claustrophobic for two or more. Shawn can knock out an inside lower ceiling in the future, but “raising the roof” later would present many problems. So putting in a loft and a ceiling below it for now, or (my preference) putting in a cathedral ceiling plus a lower inside ceiling under a “loft” seems the best way to go. This, if what I think I understand was what he was talking about.

Hi Shawn I agree with the below commenters with building a Loft or a Cathedral Ceiling(not necessarily for sleeping) more for Air exchange & the feel of the cabin as you will be living there with your wife, this of course is my opinion & may have no consequence to you lol. Just something to think about as it will be your forever home, right? I like that you are putting your bedroom on the first floor, agility may be an issue in 20 yrs. I like cozy too, however when I think about long term, and living in it, a higher ceiling is much more appealing. It is your Magum Opus, so build your Heart's Desire, it will be extraordinary and beautiful, I am sure!!! Bless you, your wife, Emily, & Anisley! Her Cabin is coming along nicely, I hope she is fairly close to you??!! I look forward to watching many more of your Videos, I am in awe of your talent! Cheers ~Kim 🇨🇦 (A fellow Ontarian)

Having a second level...being a loft, or mezzanine or even a completed second floor are all great ideas. Remember Shawn, come the completion of this masterpiece, you can only add square footage beyond the existing exterior logs, not within them. I for one, would love to see a loft or mezzanine (ruffly a 1/3 sq. ft. of 1st flr) and have a balcony facing towards to stream or even better yet facing the Greenhouse. What ever YOU choose, we all known it's you're last masterpiece and it will be spectacular!!!!! Say hello to Cali and stay safe.

It all looks very good, but I think one or two extra rounds of logs will make sense before you start on the roof section. That way you get more air in the cabin (which is always a good thing in relation to wood stoves), but it also gives a better feeling of space and a better atmosphere in that context. On the other hand, the cabin will be more efficient/economical in relation to heating if the roof on the first floor is kept low. I think that if you are going to stay a lot in the cabin and that it is thus mostly heated, I would definitely have a higher ceiling on the first floor. Keep up the good work :)

*So I have an idea:* Couldn't you place another 2 logs, either on the kitchen side or the opposite end of the house (probably overlooking that valley with the water [with added window]), to raise the height of that one wall/side... So that when you put the roof on, it will be at an equal pitch for both sides but end higher on that one wall/side... Accomplishing the needed run off height and still giving you the opportunity to have a usable upper loft (writing room, office, guest room) that you can still stand up in. 🤷🏼♀️ Loving watching the build Shawn! 💞 Can't wait to see the finished product! Have a blessed day 🙏🏼
@coolissimo692 жыл бұрын
Shawn I would follow wife's advice and go with a higher roof, better for snow, you can have a loft to store things without going outside. And space is always something you need, even you don't thing you will need.

Shawn, you were mentioning low ceilings and high ceilings/cathedral / vaulted ceilings. I’ve read books, fictional stories, based in England, the English countryside, and some of those buildings, some of those houses, they were built with regular or higher ceilings, but I remember reading about some of these houses having a library or a den with a fireplace, set to the side and they were given a lower ceiling which gave the den a more cosy feeling. I always liked that Picture in my mind. I imagine sitting down in the den reading a book next to roaring fire in the fireplace on a cold autumn night. So I agree with the appreciation of a room with a lower ceiling. Something nice about a cosy room like that.

Shawn, Years ago (decades)I built a 20 X 20 shop using 12' studs for the walls, tied in ceiling joists at 8' (16" on center) and then put on a 8-12 pitched roof. It gave full use of a 2nd floor for an office, storage and much more. I would go up another 2 logs above what you talked about. In the future you may well be glad you did. It may be another week of work but once its in you'll have it as a great option for future use.

Compromise with his and hers as you know, is crucial. Open space above the kitchen/dining/living is a good idea to give her the idea of space but a lower ceiling and a cozy feel for you in the bed/bath gives you a nicer and more intimate interior space. The loft, even if small will give you both great storage. Think family treasures or Christmas decorations.

I'm glad you're planning to lay a temporary floor up there before/while working on the roof. 1 misstep is soon taken. I'd prefer you safe and sound. I'm already crazy impressed with you handling ALL of these logs on your own, with just some cables and chains. I like improvising while building though. A tree is not even width. And it's great to have - and allow - ideas. It will be YOUR home, so if you want some storage lofts, then I will happily watch you build them.
@PiginPooh2 жыл бұрын
I would put 3 rows around the perimeter to give you a dedicated loft/den/guest/ reading room. If you can then do. The previous cabin was too cozy and uninviting to guest+1. Do because you can. Do because you can't nor want to go back. And can you always close off the loft space for conservation of energy and heat. Do because your wife is right.

Hi Shawn, Love what your doing and really enjoy watching the progress. However….. there’s always a but… I have a suggestion … which may be irrelevant, but I would opt for a larger and more spacious environment in the cabin by adding a more sizable loft if possible. I never built a home, and I have built many, where I regretted adding a high(er) ceilings or additional useable space, like a loft. But I have nightmares where I failed to add additional space that would have resulted in a more productive and comfortable living environment. Just a thought, I would add another log, to the additional log your adding and Increase the roof height for more loft space and better roof pitch. I know, I know…I’m not doing the work and it’s not my cabin. But I have built and been around projects like these for 40 years, as a conservationist and ranger I have come to value cabins of this nature and recognize the benefit of a more open feel. Believe me, the space will become functional and a pleasant environment. Ultimately you will appreciate the cosy and yet free environment years after the project is complete.

You could probably use your beams and the ing posts to build a gable into the mid-side of the roof. More light into the mid areas of the cabin, and views out to trees. A space to build in the stairs and access loft rooms left and right of centre. But I totally get your preference of a low roofed cabin, with a darker interior.....
