You need to add a small wind generator at the top of one of those tall trees so that you can generate power even after dark. They work well in storms as well as the wind is usually blowing when those occur. I was a solar only and fought the advice of many to add a wind generator and now that I have I cannot say how much easier it is keep a good charge and maintain battery levels during the cold dark months.

@@ShawnJames1 The efficiency you mention has nothing to do with the mass inside. Sure, a big mass will need more time to get melted, but the insulation efficiency will be the same. place 2 similar freezers side by side, one empty one full, and you will see that after a long time, the power used will be similar.

@@ShawnJames1 "Yeti Ice" also a blanket if you can find one that big...or "rug" i guess. Tape something reflective to the outward facing you'll both keep the freezer frozen and add some heat to that amazing structure you have built. In theory you can use straw in your ice to keep the ice in that state for a prolonged period of time but you don't want that ice in your freezer as its value is in keeping bacteria and other foreign material out. Not sure how big your basement is but if you can stand in it you're better off with a walk-in freezer. "Just hang the meat up by meat-hooks" save on packaging. Build a carving bench do all your meat processing (de-bone-ing) in the walk-in. Have some type of disposable over-suit to keep the germs away that you can throw in the burn pile. One piece of wild game such as a white tail deer can produce an awesome amount of food if properly cut then prepared. "Bone broth" is very healthy by way of example. That would go well frozen as a cooking stock where you grow your vegetables. If you make your freezer big enough you'll probably have farmers show up to give you their meat even if they're a hundred miles away(round trip) as that's how hot the inside of a farm is year around ... in return send them off with frozen soup stock. Most efficient way of boiling water is an induction stove. Best (most efficient, safest, cleanest) time to do food prep and in fact cook and eat is in the middle of Winter so long as that Sun is shining. "No humidity." No better friend when you're on your own than the plants and soil you're taking care of so great job with that one. Nothing I'm sure you don't already know ("bark broth") etc.

@@ehombane That makes sense. A given volume should consume a given amount of energy to cool on average, regardless of its density. But, I suspect that you may find that there is less temperature fluctuation in a "full" freezer than in one that is half full. This should mean less "freezer burn" on the meat in a "full" freezer. And, that is the ultimate goal, food preservation.
@ehombane3 жыл бұрын
@@ivermec-tin666 I think that you did not got my point. The subject was about the efficiency of the freezer. And the mass inside, does not really matter. All that matter is the insulation. and of course the compressor. A larger mass, will matter only in the case of the accidental power loss, when as I said a bigger mass will have a bigger inertia. And that you bring up the issue of density, you may be up for a surprise. I just got surprised too to find that water has a bigger thermal capacity than rock, that obviously is much denser. But this is a different subject. Let me put the efficiency matter in a different way. Let say that you have a mass of 10 kilo of meat to preserve. You have a freezer and a battery. The battery will have let say power to freeze the mass, and keep it at the desired temperature for 60 days. Now, that idea about a bigger mass, will mean that you can fill the freezer with additional mass, and than the freezer will be more efficient, meaning that the desired temperature will be kept for more than 60 days till the battery is drained. I bet that the second setup will last the same amount of time. The difference will be only that in the second case the battery will be depleted more in the beginning till the whole mass is cooled. This can be proved with two similar freezers, and batteries kept in the same room. As for idea of filling the empty space with ice from outside, is no more matter about efficiency, but helping the new technology, with the ancient one of using natural ice. Before 1800, the ice was harvested in winter and preserved by being insulated with straws and sawdust.

Well done! Next season try that method produced by "Greenhouse in the Snow" (search that name on youtube) in Nebraska. He buried 1100 feet of 6 inch plastic line 8 feet underground and uses a simple motor to draw air through the lines...it is always 54 degrees by the time it enters his greenhouse. You may not need 1100 feet. He has never had to heat that greenhouse and grows Oranges and Lemons amongst other things-that is how well it controls the greenhouse atmosphere.
@enzopalumbo21643 жыл бұрын
I don't think going 8 ft underground at his location would be possible or practical. If he can go 8ft deep, he would need heavy machinery to do that. I don't think he can bring in heavy machinery too easily. I believe he has 6 inch plastic pipe in bottom of the outer beds that draw in solar heated air and the water reservoir acts as a heat sink to control the temperature in the greenhouse.

Love your channel! When I lived in the Philadelphia area back in the 1990s, and it got cold, or snowy, I would put any extra food in a cooler out in back on my deck and filled it with snow to keep it cold until I needed it. Unfortunately, where I am now in NE TN, it doesn't get that cold during the day, up in the 40s (F) (5 C) or even in the low 50s (F) (11C) although we've had nights down in the 20s (F) (-4 C). No snow either, but then we haven't had any significant snow since about 2003, so I can't use the cooler method for storing food. Even an old freezer wouldn't work because of the wide range of temperatures.

I followed a lot of vets and some have rescued dogs that looked beyond death. And they fed them raw food diet and it was amazing yo see their recovery. Better skin, coats and digestive systems. There are so many chemicals in dog food. The dog food industry was born out of the meat processing plants. All the scraps left over from processing the good Grade A meat that goes to your grocer for human consumption was being thrown away at a loss. Someone along the way figured out a way to make that "Meat by products " into something yo feed your animals. Hence a greater profit margin for everyone involved. it also helps to add insulation to the freezer on all the sides. that 2 inches of blown-in dense foam they have in the walls is just not enough. it's fine for the winter times since it's probably a lot colder outside then in the freezer itself, but for the summer adding insulation if you want to stay efficient is a good idea. that's what they do on the small sail-boats that do cross-ocean sailing voyages and don't have a lot of electrical power to spare. they add 6-8 inches all around the freezer/fridge to save as much as they can of that battery power they got.

I installed a steel rack above mine so you can slide in 2 ft x 8 ft sheets of plywood 4 ft above the panels, the winter sun still hits them and I shovel off the plywood once in a while. No need to scratch up the panels and certainly way less maintenance. My array is mounted to posts in the ground so much easier then roof mounted ones.

FWIW, my single solar panel, set at 60 degree angle, typically melts off a snow storm in a day. The rain-snow combinations are a mess, though.

Really enjoying both your channels. Not because I identify, but because you live a life that seems a million miles from mine. It isn’t, I’m a few hundred miles away in a New York suburb. All the best to you and Cali!

You should take care more of yourself especially you live in that kind of environment. I was a professional, production potter for over 40 years. I didn’t care enough of myself, l lifted heavy waist, I was bending down a lot because I was teaching too. Now I’m 68 years old and I have a lot of issues with my back. If I know it will end up like this I would take more care of myself. Just be safe!

Try using some Rain-X windshield wash to clean the panels. The hydrophobic coating will cause the rain to bead up and not stick and freeze on so much. It takes a few uses to build up the coating.

You could fill out the dead space inside the fridge with water containers, to keep it running more efficient.

Nice video I enjoy seeing the steps that resolve challenges and diy solutions that do make it somewhat easier in less than optimal conditions. You do lovely work and I continue to watch and learn.

Solar panels - Maybe some wood framed hinged flip up and over cover panels similar to the green house panel material.

I wondered what you feed Cali. We feed our dogs raw food as well. Had our first snow here in The Blue Water area. Which is right over the border of Sarnia Canada. I look forward to seeing how your figs do for you in the greenhouse all season. All of my figs (in pots) are stored in my garage. It was a great fig season here in Michigan. Have a great week. ☕️

Having a freezer in the greenhouse in winter is beneficial for another reason too, it actualy output some heat too. ( the heat from the compressor as it pulls energy from the food)..
