A look at 2 Lionel MPC era sets

Back when it first came out, I bought the Nickel Plate set for my Nephew. I played with it more than he did. It's gone but not forgotten.

Nice job. As a Wabash guy, a pet peeve is why would they call a Nickel Plate set, The Wabash Cannonball? The only thing they had in common was both roads were absorbed into the N&W in Oct 1964.

I have the Walbash Cannon ball set in its box that I got for Christmas when I was about 7 years. 52 long years ago.

Nickel Plate, or Wabash, it has a Burlington green gondola… Don’t overthink it too much!

Black diamond express brings back memories of 3 and 4 year old me just getting into model trains and seeing it on display at my hobby town usa used back in the early 90s and looking at with so much eager and all struck but couldn't get it because my family was poor. Sadly I'm still poor now but I'm hoping one day I can get the set and enjoy it like the little kid me wanted to do

I love trains any scale. I can rant and ramble... Who are starter sets designed for, The adults or the kids? Because when I was a kid I didn't know anything about trains other than what I saw at a railroad crossing. And I think a little bit of education goes a long way, like a starter set with a three cars and maybe a switcher caboose would be called a local switcher and it could give some information on the box about what that means as far as train operations. Now granted adults oftentimes know these things but when I was a kid in order to learn about trains I had to beg my dad to buy the Walthers catalog and I still to this day look through it for numerous reasons. I love the black diamond train because it is a freight train (meaning hauling between destinations/ terminals.) But locals can be pretty neat too for some switching activities. Yes my biggest gripe is... too many brand names on toy trains oftentimes ruins that authentic operations possibilities and are just a shiny object for a lot of us. I watched your Menards boxcar video and I absolutely love all those boxcars, they look so real like they are ready to work for a real railroad.

Your Wabash set is an early one with the A A R style trucks on the cars. These were molded in left over postwar molds before MPC debuted the Symington Wayne trucks.

Nobody can explain why the Wabash Cannonball set had NIckel Plate loco and Caboose. The Wabash was a different Road. And as far as I know the NIckel Plate never ran a cannon ball. 😀 The only thing the two roads had in common was that they both were absorbed into the N&W in Oct 1964. Also they are fixed couplers not dummy couplers. Enjoyed the video.

Wonder if Lionel wanted to be respectful (If that's a proper word to use) to N&W and just used both road names in the same box. Also wondering if at the factory they had said, we got all these green painted gondolas, just letter them for Burlington.😂 Could also be color factors, didn't want too much black or too much red in the same box?

@@chriscummings4206 Lionel has t schemehistory of bright colored trains going back to the Pre-war years. Some were prototypical paint schemes and others not so much. JLC answered the question by saying he liked the bright colors as did women and Mothers bought many of those sets for their children, so in some respects he was marketing to the mothers.

What made you buy the sets? Was it the penn central boxcar?

No, someone was trying to give these away along with some track. I decided to take them, as the owner had no use for them and just wanted them gone. The main reason I took these is because of the great condition both sets were in, and because I didn’t have either set in my collection.
