Now a step-by-step tutorial on how to build one!
@excitedbox57052 жыл бұрын
This is quite old technology and these days can be done with simple arduino kits open source software, and a few motors. It works just like image recognition cameras, just with an IR camera for the image. OpenCV could be used to detect the image and keep the camera pointed at it by turning the motor until the image is centered. The wire wound resistor lets you know how far off from straight ahead the "target" is in relation to your vehicle. This would allow you to steer left/right/up/down, so the resistance for that axis goes down/up until your vehicle is pointed straight at it. That is how you would make a robot vehicle, plane, or even a robotic arm for picking up items, but could also be used for turrets or missiles such as this was originally used for.

@BuildGUY You don't really want your seeker to "scan". You want it to hit what you are looking at, not the friendly jet just ahead of you!
@untrust2033 Жыл бұрын
@BuildGUY Ah you are talking about focal plane array based sensors instead of the "traditional" ones gotcha. (Although those ones don't use a reticle! and you can't really determine range from infrared) Radar missiles require a target to be "painted" by a radar beam. Depending on whether they are semi - active or active, the radar pulses may come from the missile or the launch platform. For semi - active missiles, the launching platform must first have detected and then acquired the target. Modern radar systems often have different modes depending on what is needed, such as scanning, single target tracking and scan while track modes. To some extent you *can* "point and click" active radar missiles although you run the risk of either not locking onto anything or locking onto something you don't want to (friendly jet, passenger plane etc). Really only the earliest IR guided missiles could be fooled by the sun. Once spin - scan systems with infrared reticles were developed it became a lot easier to filter out sources of IR such as the sun, clouds or the earth.

Yes, this is a homing head from a Red Top. The main item missing is the small reflecting telescope that fits on top of the reticle assembly and focuses the IR image onto the reticle. The reticle is rotated at 100Hz by a 2 or 3 (can't remember which) phase motor along with a gyro wheel. The gyro isolates missile body motion. A pickoff around the reticle provides a position reference signal. The reticle/gyro assembly is in a 2 axis gimbal driven by two DC torque motors. Beneath the reticle is a field lens (has a redish colour) that brings the IR onto the IR detector cell. The detector is cooled from the aircraft compressed air supply before launch. The cooler is mounted under the detector. A guidance electronics package takes inputs from the IR cell and the reference pickoff and provides signals that give the two axis offsets from centre of the target image on the reticle. These signals provide drives to the gimbal torque motors to keep the target spot at the centre of the reticle. Wire pickoffs on each axis of the gimbal provide position rates of change to drive the missile fins. In summary what you would need to get the unit to track a target would be the telescope, the guidance electronics package, gyro drive supply and a high pressure pure air supply. Let me know if you require any further information/help, it would be good to get it working!

The spiral in the optical path is probably a scanning reticle. It's not an imaging sensor - there are only 1 to maybe 4 "pixels" and the bearing and elevation error between the target and the sensor boresight is measured by the reticle's pattern's effect on the IR sensor waveform. There were two main types: AM and FM reticle seekers. In AM, I believe phase indicated error angle and amplitude indicated radial error. For FM it was also phase for angle but frequency for radial error, which made it less susceptible to some kinds of jamming and natural interference.
@msylvain597 жыл бұрын
There is something that looks like a tri-phase motor stator around the optical front piece holder, I have the feeling it rotates, serving at the same time the purpose of spinning the spiral patern and providing gyro stabilisation.

So the sensor isn't generating any kind of image, but how does it know the direction to target? Is it like an xy error, or something else? How would multiple potential targets interfere with these signals?
@forfun52385 жыл бұрын
@@Waffle4569 it doesn't generate image, but modern seekers like IIR (infrared imaging) can view like a video camera and can easily differentiate between Target and countermeasures........laser jamming, flares have no effect on such seekers.........but what he's showing in the video is reticle based seeker.......it gets easily (the missile gets) diverted by laser jamming........how does it know the direction?? The seeker head tries to maintain the IR FOV (field of view) at the center.......if not it'll give steering commands and adjusts itself to keep target in it's field of view

You would think maybe the UK would have learnt that by now. Ie the cost of our defence procurement probably has something to do with limited crossover sourcing with manufacturing.

If it is an cooled infrared sensor, the small copper tube is maybe for an gas tank, which cools the sensor through evaporation/gas expansion? I have seen similar technology on the Thron EMI Thermal Imager which has an exchangeable gas tank for cooling. But I am a bit confused about the clear lens and the clear (acrylic like) head cover of the missile. Does this pass short or mid-wave ir? Because I am pretty sure they wont let pass LWIR.

I always find it funny that people pretend like all our technology came about because companies just believed in it so much and were willing to spend tons of money researching and developing new technology for consumer goods. Not exactly... All our modern technology was developed by the military with more money than any corporation would even consider spending just to bring us stuff like DVD players and computers. But in the end they get the technology without having to really work that hard for it. No problems with that, it's a system that works very well and brings us all kinds of cool stuff, but always give credit to the nations and governments who spent the time and money to develop the tech we have today, not Apple or someone else...
@shadowmod36 жыл бұрын
i believe the majority still insist in that fairy tale ignorance. little do we know that our food tech, the electronic components in our computers, mobile phones and many household items we find everywhere in our house were initially made for the military.. but then again nobody care what is true anymore because it wasn't politically correct but necessary and truth is the enemy of the modern generation.
