"Reports that Jeremy Jacobs is cheap" *Laughs in Eugene Melnyk*

Thanks for the content, it would be interesting if you did a series about all the NHL owners.
@exeter19854 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I would also like to include the Team Presidents with that. I think that sometimes Owners and Presidents don't hire the right people and sometimes try to have too much of a hand in things instead of letting their people do their jobs. Anyway, very good idea.

I third this but...random order. Melnyk to Jacobs is a nice transition. Keep us guessing though. No 1-31 or 31-1. He can do a little checklist on notepad paper in his book if he's worried about doing the same team twice.

Fun Jermey Jacobs story! Not sure how many other fans noticed, but when the NHL returned to play after the 2012 lockout all the water fountains at the Garden in Boston had disappeared. Never to return. To this day the indent in the wall is still visible between the bathroom entrance/exits. The only place in the building to get a free drink of water is guest services. Fun stuff!!

I’m a lifelong Bruins fan, and I hate Jacobs so much. He constantly raises ticket and concession prices, and he just doesn’t listen to the fans. When I lived in Boston, I went to at least 1 game every year, and yes, he did make TD Garden a much better fan experience, but that doesn’t block out the price increases.

Mr. Burns but he owns a hockey team
@trevstar16104 жыл бұрын
Honestly most bruins fans like myself aren’t too mad at him because the product on the ice has been so solid. People may get mad about the lack of championships but with all of them coming out of Boston the Bruins have gotten a bit of a pass. Most fans just like how they can go to a bruins game any night and they’re probably going to win. I can’t see the fan base forcing him to sell the team or step down as owner any time soon

Disappointed you didn't mention that he owns Delaware North, which is a hospitality company. His company has his tentacles in a lot of sports venues throughout the world, mostly in the US. I'm not gonna sympathize with a billionaire hurting but with a lot of events being canceled, no doubt his company will be hurting this year. Edit: See if Jacobs controls your sports venue here: www.delawarenorth.com/venues

As always I enjoyed your video. I was born a Bruin fan. I will die a Bruin fan. I will always want them to win the Stanley Cup. But, I’m also a realist. Like it or not, the NHL and it’s teams are first and foremost a business. In business it’s the unpopular decisions that sometimes make the it thrive. I know Quebec City has a beautiful new arena, I know they have incredibly rabid fans. But good business says Houston is a much larger market with the American dollar backing it up. That is not a very popular thing to hear in Quebec, or across Canada. But there’s no denying that the NHL profits more from their teams in large US cities then most of the Canadian teams.
@wingsfan14504 жыл бұрын
Houston feels like another Atlanta. A massive market with tons of money with zero demogrpahics/culture to succeed as a hockey market. At least with Vegas the tourism would bring in half the capacity for the away team.

Shannon, this could be a genius idea for content being given birth to indirectly. A series on the current (now, later could expand into ownership histories, etc) ownership situations, if these are prosperous, how prospeeous in general terms these are, if the outlook is good for the current ownership group in the future, even expanding into how said present owners came to own said team and how they came upon their fortune even. For example, I am not a hurricanes fan, but sort of appreciated Dundon in a way from afar, until stumbling across how he accrued his wealth as basically a pretty cruddy predatory lender, or how about the Pegula's and fracking. A good look into how said owners behaved as owners, if they are conservative or aggressive, or do like advanced stats like the devils/76ers guys, have they been successful owners? Do they rebuild well? Etc.. how they have done from a pr management situation during the times of the virus, or the protests as more examples

Jacobs and Delware North are awful. As a part of a funding deal with the city they were supposed to build a community skatepark near the Garden. Years later someone realized they never did and called them out on it, so they cut a check for a portion of the cost and called it a day. They recently redid the seating in the Garden and bragged about adding fancy armrest cushions in the loge. They didn't mention adding several rows everywhere, and now the leg room is so bad you can knee someone in the back of the head if you're not careful. And of course, concession prices get jacked up year after year.

Since Jacobs has owned the team, the Bruins have run into the best Habs team ever three times, Gretzky twice and Lemieux et al twice. Add the three finals in the last decade and many fan bases would take that.

I think Marchand's comment was meant in the context of having to play under a cap, and no one taking too much that would render the team less competitive. I mean, he thought Marner was worth only 12 million.
@jayjayson96134 жыл бұрын
Jacobs is far from the worst owner right now. He doesn't mingle with the team, that's all I ask for. I feel bad for those affected by his actions but I dont have the time or mind space to constantly judge everything that goes with all my hobbies. I just want to watch the damn game when the Bruins are on.
@ZueluMTG4 жыл бұрын
Jeremy Jacobs leaves a bad taste in Boston Sports Fan's mouth. And this is the same market with the most well known owners in baseball without the last name Stienbrenner, for reasons which frustrate Red Sox fans infinitely. Jacobs has been quoted saying that realistically he bought the Boston Garden for the concessions revenue, and it just so happened to come with a hockey team. He presided over the era of cheapness in which the team could have easily won with Borque and Nealy with a couple more relatively high priced players. In the '04-'05 lockout, he was advocating for a salary cap. To be fair to him, since then he has allowed spending to the cap. And it has led to a long string of relative success and contention for Stanley Cups. There are only a few years where they really could be considered (among) the top contender(s) for the cup, but in the NHL playoffs, it can be stolen by anybody. Are his business practices greedy, borderline evil? Yes. Has those business practices cost the team the cup or a real chance at it? A few times. Would I go back and change history so he wasn't the owner? Probably not.

I'll just add as a side note for anyone curious about this question/answer. In the state of Massachusetts, it was really easy to qualify, if not directly for unemployment, but for the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance. A very similar thing. All you had to really do is work somewhere in the last year or so even part-time, even if it was just for a week or a day (seemingly), or have any children staying out of school, and a myriad of other possible reasons. That being said though. Some employees for the Boston Garden might have been from other states, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, etc. Not sure what the deal was there. But overall yes. Boston loves saying he is cheap. LOL. But they also like saying Bobby Orr made a stupid decision when Jacobs offered him ownership in the team instead of $$$$, and Orr said no lol

I'd like the next expansion to be two teams at once (Houston and Quebec) to keep the conferences balanced... though I guess the teams would be angry to have to share an expansion draft
@JHockeyFan4 жыл бұрын
Quebec shouldn’t get a team IMHO. Market is too small and the loonie is worth crap compared to the USD. Better to expand for growth potential with a stronger USD in US markets.

Don't confuse Quebec City with the province. The city has a small population, has to compete with the Habs, and is owned by an owner whose politics are problematic at best.

in abouts 1979 he threatened to move the team he had for then 4 years to Salem New Hampshire unless the state built him a new arena. Then The New Hampshire legislature said nope not gonna build him a tax payer paid arena. in 1985 he refused to sell the team to a group lead by Bobby Orr and Wayne Cashman with state senator Paul Tsongas. Bruins bought for 10 million now worth about 925 million. no word on what the Shawmut/Fleet/now Td north center is worth today.

I'm a Canadian who lives in Houston and has lived in Colorado. I really dont think hockey is going to work here, a team could possibly play at the rockets stadium Toyota center, but let's face it, its usually white folks who attend the games, and white people are leaving Houston because it's dangerous, crumbling and it floods easily which is a big deal. we had the Aeros here and the attendance and enthusiasm was really low. The avalanche do well because people are will to fly into a nice city to see road games when the Avs are not doing well. I dont think Houston has the same appeal as Vegas and Colorado because it's not a well liked city generally.
