I wish Japan had faith that we would embrace their madcap style and sense of humour. I would've loved to had played Mad Panic Coaster (although looking difficult af) back in the day as well as that Slap Happy Rythm game, Mental! Great stuff Sean.

The japanese PS1 library is truly a treasure trove of hidden games. Glad to see you covering them! My suggestion for the Japan-only wheel is Zoku Gussun Oyoyo, a really fun puzzle arcade game which is sort of a mix between Tetris and Lemmings.

SideBySide exudes a DAD ENERGY that i dont know if i can quite explain, but it just feels like one of those simple, well presented games that an older person can pick up for a short time, enjoy the slick presentation and real cars and its difficult and subtle enough that it can justify coming back for long periods of time. My dad had some rally games on the PS1 and PC that were exactly like that

That Mad Panic Coaster opening has no business going that hard, makes me want to get my skateboard and drink a PBR! Sounds like something off 90s Fat Wreck Chords. Side By Side looks like my kind of game, just need to add Eurobeat to the sound files. Tho you mention gabber, maybe Paul Elstak would work too haha. Between those and Slap Happy (OST sounds sick), this episode had a lot of bangers I need to play. Even Dark Tales looked intriguing and I'm not even a horror fan!

Man, I've always been gutted that Slap Happy never got a Western release as it looks right up my alley. The style on it is insanely cool and I love a good fighter and rhythm game so melding the two is peak PS1. Some very interesting titles on this one, and Dark Tales is definitely one I'd like to try! Expertly analysed Sean, even if I had to do a double take when I thought you said "trash" instead of "thrash" 🤣

Went to revisit Side by Side Special 2000 thanks to this video and I've been having a blast, super glad this series exists as it's quickly risen to becoming one of my favorites on KZbin. Some notes about the game: In Side by Side Special 2000 the AI speed DOES ramp up slightly for each bump up in difficulty, however the AI speed is constant between difficulties in the original Side by Side Special (for some odd reason). The game also has analog support, though only via the NeGcon. The game is still more than playable with a standard pad, but I'd imagine the fine analog steering would help for the tougher courses! As much as I do genuinely enjoy the Zuntata soundtrack for the game, I must admit that playing Eurobeat instead really improves the experience :V Hopefully sometime in the future you'll get to cover Cave's (yes, that Cave!) Touge Max series, they fill a similar niche of "Racing games with arcadey yet nuanced drift handling on mountain passes." They focus a bit more on the tuner aspect as well, and they're damn good in their own right!

I've said this before, but I love the look of ps1 games going for a cartoonish, faux celshading look. PS1 can't do actual cel shading, so it's all textures, and games like Slap Happy Rhythm Busters and Megaman Legends look great.

Great Video Sean, an epic selection of games here for sure. Mad Panic Coaster looks insane & i will have to try it when i get the chance, I played Side by Side a while back & i agree it is a cool game but is tough, i think its by far one of the best racers I've played on the PS1 so far. Slap Happy Rhythm Busters I agree is an epic game, been playing that over recent months & i never knew about it until you mentioned it on Twitter so had to try it out & it is as good as it looks, a really cool game. Dark Tales is an interesting game, I'll definitely have to look more into that for sure. Again another great video, totally enjoyed watching, Cheers!

About side by side: 1) Special 2000 is actually easier. The OG had a much more restrictive time, to the point its impossible to complete some tracks on higher difficulties. 2) Winning on every track, you will eventually unlock 3 original tracks for this port. Winning at each of those will unlock a themed Taito car (a van, a wagon and a truck) 3) Time Attack is a must. This a racer you have to sit down and learn. Until you have beaten the 1st place time there, forget about winning it. 4) MT is a must. Its slows you down faster and you have control of your drifts as well. 5) The AI has an extremely rubber bending. I am still to win all tracks, kinda gave up on the last one. Its a good game still, especially for the time. Genuinely feel is one of the better PS1 racers driving wise.

Im gonna give you the best advice to get good at side by side 2000, play with manual transmition, its a life changer, you need to take some curves on the hardest courses the cleanest way possible and with specific gears shifting. Also, yeah, the game is turbo hard, it doesn't forgive even a couple of mistakes on those courses you mentioned, most taito arcades racers are like that, I guess that's the way they designed the replay value on them. Excellent video. Hope to see Battle Gear 2 reviewed someday, that game can be brutal, but its one of the best racing games ever made imo.

Ah, a new "Japan Only PS1 Games". You know how to make Saturdays more amazing! Game #1: I have seen this game before, I think the first time was in a video about 200 Japan-only PS1 games by Redd Arremer. Well, I always thought it looks wacky and also in terms of speed it is the F-Zero GX of rollercoaster/minecart levels but as a full game (and yes, I know F-Zero GX came out later). Game #2: Can you say "dorifto" much? Seriously though, this looks like a really fun racing game. Game #3: Oh, I have seen this one before as well. It always intrigued me as a fan of fighting games...but then for some reason I forget about it till I see it again. Game #4: Well, that is quite an intriguing (horror) game. Also thank you for the nightmare fuel. 😅 Kitty spotted at: 0:49 1:48 (does the cat guitar count?) 33:26 Thank you so much for your hard work you are providing to us! If anyone is wondering how culturally significant touge is, you can’t open Forza Horizon 5 Eventlab without tripping over at least three touge stages. Problem is there isn’t a lot of quality put into most of them. I tried to make one but it had so many assets that my 2014 Xbox One couldn’t handle it and the game crashed
@hikaruk.981
@hikaruk.981 Жыл бұрын
One thing with Touge style games is that I don't think they're generally meant to be beatable in Automatic Transmission. You have to know when to downshift (and when to downshift multiple gears rapidly), and when it's actually disadvantageous to upshift. I've never been any good at that.

Nice to see Dark Tales pop in! I will mention, this game is *nearly* english fan translated now. Someone did do work with the translation efforts (iconoclast), but there are bits here and there missing. I've yet to add the subtitles to my videos on the game however, but they exist, so if you wanted to know if the translations exist: They do, just not fully complete yet. If anyone wants the translations and wants to try the task into somehow adding them into the game itself, i will happily provide! Anyone that can help finish the translation efforts would also be awesome too. I am also the first person to 100% complete this game and to learn of the logic this game has for all endings. It is a tad bit messy still however.

9:55 no! No! No! If anyone went into a motion cabinet with Mad Panic Coaster they would not exit while occupying their own body. That would be so violent their soul would be ejected as their bodies bluescreened

One other notable thing about Side By Side Special, is the announcer is the good ol' voice actor of Barry Burton from Resident Evil ;)

If it isn't on the wheel already, I'd recommend Culdcept Expansion, it's a unique card board game rpg which actually became a sizeable series with games on the ds and 3ds

Always wanted to try the Culdcpt series (I think only one game in the series ever got a PAL release, which is wild.) I'll add it for you now :)

Oh my, do I have thoughts this time around! So, Mad Panic Coaster... Honestly, even just watching the footage felt exhausting, which might make me just another old man, but hear me out, here - the camera is too close in on the coaster car. Sure, it gives a good view of the characters in the car, which gives the game more personality, and sure it gives the sensation of vertigo and speed (what Roger Callois termed 'ilinx'), but it also makes it really hard to see things to react to them in time, both enemies and turns. I dunno, I might be wrong; you played it and I didn't, so what do you think? Side by Side Special - not much to say other than if you had a rough time with it, it would unequivocally destroy me. Slap Happy Rhythm Busters - Okay, I need to try this. Between this, Incredible Crisis, and Galerians, I think Polygon Magic may be taking a place beside Human Entertainment as a PS1 dev I will absolutely proselytize for! Dark Tales from the Lost Soul - I absolutely agree with you about the visual style just feeling more horror game to me. For me, I think it's because my first experiences with horror games had nothing to do with Resident Evil (although, I did notice the RE2 BG music; well played). Instead, I cut my teeth on games like D, Mansion of Hidden Souls, and the like, where these new-fangled polygons were pre-rendered in high, glossy quality, so seeing that with the skeletal host is just right up my alley. Also, just based on the title screen, I suspect that Vertex and Zero are separate companies - the title screen copyright shows Sammy and Zero, with Zero appearing to stand alone (I could be wrong, though - I unfortunately do not know what the kanji says). Another fantastic episode! I really needed something like this right now, so thank you! You and @SteadySphere are absolute heroes.

Ay man thanks for watching! Yeah I think a lot of the my problems with Mad Panic could have been alleviated some what some adjustments to the camera perspective, but it's a hard one to pull off thanks to amount of jumping needed and the I suppose the velocity of all your actions it could so easily vere into the territory of making you feel unwell while playing it. Still, I appreciate the cajones do even just make a game that fast and extreme, even if it's often to it's detriment.

Very interesting episode: - Mad Panic Coaster: concept arcady interesting and so japanese, but it's so fast it could give me headaches ! As well as it's crazy price, my god how a game like this be so expensive ?? - Side By Side Special 2000: I had a game on PS2, I think it was called Kaido Racer or something like this, based on the same concept. I really didn't like it, I couldn't even pass the first tracks how hard and unintuitive were the controls ! So I understand you on how bad you're in this game... - Slap Happy Rhythm Busters: one of the very few fighting games I'm interested to try, even if I don't like much this genre - Dark Tales From The Lost Soul: another interesting dicovery, even if the Japenese only language is clearly a barrier. Gameplay side, quite poor, but refreshing concept.

I don't know if I remember correcty but I think I've read somewhere that Dark Tales is based on a tv series of the same name(?)

After hearing you mention no one had anything on Zero/Vertex I did some digging around, and you were right. Until I finally found a Japanese YT streamer who managed to hit every ending and get the credits to play. I wrote out everything, going to try adding it to the mobygames entry, maybe we'll see a bunch of crossover hits with existing staff at other companies and figure where this studio came from for only a single game. Though it seems like a lot of the casting was done through "theatrical company june theater" (劇団 六月劇場). Edit: Well that didn't take long. Bob Timbello is one of the core designers and he was a writer on Dungeon Explorer II and a Planner on Dino Crisis 3. LMAO.

Timbello seems to appear in the strangest places. He played something of an important part at NCS Masaya during their early years, for instance. I'm surprised no one's tracked him down for an interview.

@@DragoonEnRegalia I'm still working on doing all the moby entries, but it appears the one common denominator is a ton of the dev side all worked on "Yellow Brick Road"/イエロー・ブリック・ロード (of which Bob worked at Acclaim Japan at the time and they're set as one of the publishers for it). We'll see once I've got the credits all inserted.

Sean, you didn't mention you can brake in Mad Panic Coaster by pressing down on the d-pad. Did you finish the game without using brakes at all?

You know while editing it I thought to myself, damn I went a whole video without mentioning a mechanic. I don't think it factors too much into my opinion of the game overall, but its still something I wish I took the time to talk about. (Also yes, I did use the break on occasions)
