Very cool, my first SEGA console was the Genesis, certainly not a bad start but back then I was not aware of anything SEGA prior to the SMS which I never had back in the day.

Yeah I was the same way. I had no idea about the other consoles or computers before the SMS. Over a decade ago when I was really starting to get into retro gaming is when I found that out. I think it's pretty cool to see how old Sega truly is, that started during the war. My first Sega console was the SMS, but my mom returned it for the NES about a week later during that Christmas season. So I really didn't experience Sega until the Genesis like yourself.

I wish I had this when I was obsessing over getting 128,000. I know compared to Nintendo, it may be less impressive, but I would totally have loved it. Heck, I'd play it right now if I could.

It's a really cool system. The joysticks are less than desirable, but if you can get past that, it's awesome. I don't own one personally, but I have played on them. I also can play SG-1000 games on my Everdrive flashcart for the SMS. That how I recorded the gameplay section. So if you have a SMS and an Everdrive, you can play all the SG-1000 titles on it.

I think I recall Coleco having had some kind of deal with Sega, which was later abandoned.

I've heard that too. But I've not been able to find any documents, articles, or any kind of proof of it. So for now I just say it's one of those retro gaming urban legends, until I find definitive proof. I know Nintendo had a deal with Atari to distribute the NES in North America, but Atari nixed the deal when they saw the Donkey Kong cartridge in a Colecovision during the CES show in 82'. I believe it was 82', I could be wrong on the date.

@@RetrogamerGenX 1983 for Coleco showing a new version of DK on its forthcoming Adam computer, that was said to have killed the Atari-Nintendo deal for the U.S. Famicom. However, Ray Kassar was let go from Atari only two months later, and so that deal lost its primary backer.

It's hard to believe the SG1000 was released on the same day as the NES. The hardware dates back to before 1979 and lacked multicolor sprites. While it supports 32 sprites, it's like saying the C64 supports 64 sprites, it's kind of a lie. IIRC, it only supports 4 sprites per scanline. That really limits the ability to stack sprites to make multicolor sprites. To make even a 3 color sprite eats 2 sprites or 2 sprites per scanline without flicker. The SG1000 is pretty much identical to the Colecovision. The chipset requires at least 16kB or RAM plus scratch RAM, which makes it more expensive. OTOH, an unexpanded NES is pretty severely limited as well, but still has a better graphics chip and a better sound chip.

Yeah pretty much the Colecovision, MSX, and Sega's early consoles were all the same. Some minor differences, really just different system roms and ram configurations. Hell, even the SMS is very similar to the Coleco. I always thought the NES was more powerful than the SMS. But, I was a NES fanboy back in those days, so my opinion was bias. Now, I've come to grips with the fact the SMS was in fact, a better system. Too bad Sega couldn't secure enough 3 party devs to really stick it to Nintendo back then.

@@RetrogamerGenX It's not miles ahead of the NES, but I think the edge goes to the SMS. The NES was always plagued by flicker too. I don't know what signals goes on the SG1000 cartridge bus either or if cartridge hardware could have improved the SG1000. My guess is not. Though the colecovision can deal with huge ROMs now( I'm pretty sure there are 3Mbit roms), so there might be similarities that would at least allow for triggering bankswitches on the cartridge. But probably not more RAM. Isn't the SMS backwards compatible with a cartridge adapter? Or is it just the Mark III. I think I read the SMS isn't, but the Mark III is. There are some pretty good SG1000 games.

It's a shame they didn't have the SMS in 1983. It mostly is technically superior to the NES. They might not have won, but they would have at least stood a chance.

Right... I would have loved to see that. Nintendo may have had stiffer competition.

I realize that the computer aspect of the SC-3000 was pretty limited, but I always felt it was a no brainer to go that route, instead of buying a 1000. Great vid! Question, was this a consolidated version of a previous "A Look At" video? If it was, I might have missed it originally. 🤔

Man, I'd love to have both The Sg-1000 and the sc-3000 in my collection one day. They are hard to find Stateside though. The history part is from the video game console history video I did back in Dec. I figured the SG series needed its own a look at.
