When you visit the museum and walk around the 2000 class jumbo train on display there you think back to your childhood. Although thirsty on fuel, they served Adelaide's commuter rail well for over 30 years. They were mainly used for weekday peak hours.

These were excellent rail cars, I used to ride them on the Gawler line just prior to their retirement, the trailer cars were spacious and wonderfully quiet, in the last few years they were only used at peak times so they were kept clean and tidy and graffiti free inside. Just wish they had done a better job of keeping them clean on the outside as they usually looked grubby (especially on top) - on the odd occasion where they had been washed or polished they looked fantastic.

The one at the Railway Museum was open at the weekend for their 'Behind the Scenes' event and it looked in really good condition inside. The seats were plush and still like new. You should keep an eye on The Railway Museums website for future events where you can look back on old memories! nrm.org.au/

Such an odd sight to see 3000s coupled to Jumbos. IIRC the coupling was mechanical meaning they could be towed but the electrical system couldn't be powered, so they would've never joined any for a passenger service

I remember when they were brand new in 1978 and called "Super Trains" because of a TV series of the same name at the time. The non-powered units were quiet, air conditioning was brilliant and so was the ride quality. Marvellous things. The 3000 Class weren't as good.
@AM22trainsandthings4 ай бұрын
Yes they would have looked very impressive and a lot more comfortable with air-conditioning. Inside the seats are quite pluch too! Memories for you!
@channelsixtysix0664 ай бұрын
@@AM22trainsandthings You could imagine the contrast stepping into one of these for the first time from that of the frigging Red Hens that were well past their use-by date. The original interior was cream with green cloth seats throughout the same consist or blue cloth. and the windows a gold colored shimmer to the UV glass. They certainly made travelling on the Noarlunga Line less burdensome. The powered units weren't too bad, but would have been quieter if they were diesel-electric instead of diesel-hydraulic.

The memories catching these, i never knew at the time why they went with the yellow, red and blue then was told it was for the Crows football team. Obviously looking back now the orange was starting to look dated but im not one to like change. The 3000s i never liked as they looked tiny in comparison. Once again probably change as i don't like the 4000s now lol

We would like to have 2006 and 2112 up and running again sometime. Engines and bogies just need to be reconditioned!
@oz673 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately it goes beyond having the engines and bogies being reconditioned, I know a few people who volunteer at NRM and I have been told that to get 2006 and 2112 back into running condition it will set back NRM about 2 million dollars total. A very sad case, but I believe that SteamRanger has there 2000 class set in running condition as they idle the engines from time to time just to keep the engine from rotting away, NRM does not do this as they got that set in a non running condition.

Excellent work there Aiden, although I don't find them very attractive looking, remind me of the InterCity electric sets in Japan with the raised driver cab area. Love the scene of the dunny paper flying out the back in the breeze! I am surprised that Sims did not set up a special siding so they could be shunted in and scrapped on the spot, must have costs a pretty sum for that low loader plus escorts and police costs. I notice the motors and bogie sets had been removed too, what was the motors, Cummins? What was their published track speed Aiden, around 140KMh? Great coverage, good work Aiden.

Yes, as were Melbourne's Comeng trains (to a lesser degree). @ the time no suburban trains had this comfort & quietness (though the Brisbane EMUs just beat them for air conditioning, in 1979.) But @ the time the XPT was a real supertrain (by Australian standards) Quiet, smooth & the first train allowed to do 160 km/h many years before anything else, when 115 was the max for other trains (inc Jumbo's) An Adelaide 4,000 (or any modern EMU will run away from these diesel trains. 0-115 in 45 seconds on tests near Lonsdale. Jumbo & XPT would be 1/2 that.
