Yes, it's a little lumpy. But this has its origin, because Switzerland also operates in the mountains in winter and has to operate the weapon with gloves. The lumpy one is also the stable one. I was active as a special force in Switzerland for 10 years and we all have the sg55x platform. It is more accurate than other 5.56 rifles and can take a lot. I myself own ar10, ar15 and ak systems but my bugout lets get dirty weapon is a sig sg55x. It's heavy, but it never let me down. It's nice that you like it too 🤙

I ran my personal SG-552 SP for years as a primary duty weapon and loved it! I have always wanted to upgrade with a replacement to the SG-553 (and get a 551). My preference is for the welded on top rail with the diopter sights (love them!). B&T rails are a must for accessories. Granted, as you alluded to, a slick version just balances and handles like a dream, like an MP5 on steroids. I think Hogue has a grip with less of an aggressive angle that you would find beneficial. Magazines will crack in the top corners eventually with prolonged hard use, so you may want to get some more later down the road. Hands down better quality than any top tier AR. I will get one eventually. Enjoy - I am jealous! :)

People outfit AR's, while making them heavy and not complain.. Bought mine new back in 2006 and I'm not selling mine either. I like it as much as my AR's (Bushmasters, and Ruger SR 556). Those Swiss guns are actually better built than many AR's out there. I'll deal with a little extra weight for better reliability, and build quality. I would take this Swiss platform over an FN SCAR as well.

Sig-Sauer's dumbed down American versions (Sig-Sauer 556/556 SWAT/P556), on the other hand, started out as quality firearms but later deteriorated to poorly built crap in my personal experience. I had an early 556P which was outstanding and a later 556, which shed its top rail due to QC issues that should never have left the factory. Sig-Sauer couldn't fix the issues with my 556 and thought a 400 Tread was a fair replacement. I sold the Tread and the 556P and haven't bought a Sig-Sauer since. I'd still just about kill to get my hands on that 553P.

This isn’t Sig USA. The Sig that makes the SG55X platform has nothing to do with Sig Sauer. The company’s name is now San Swiss.

De Niro uses a Sig 551 in Ronin awesome movie. Shootingsight makes a great tool steel very crisp trigger, it made a big difference in my 551. Also Matt Kreutz in Germany has a spring and travel bushing kit that eliminates over travel and reduces pull weight. I shot High Power with my 551 it was competitive too for a production military rifle. Those clear mags allow really long OAL hand loads that can really bring out the accuracy in that 55x platform. Mine shoots 55gr Hornady ballistic tips 1 MOA no problem. It dents up brass like no other platform but it doesn’t rain hot cartridges on the person next to you either which is really nice.

I love my ARs, but I've been fantasizing about owning a 553 for a decade. Awesome little rifle.

I have the Sig 551-A1 factory SBR. I ordered it from Sig shortly before they were discontinued. I have the rail also but switched it out for the standard forearm which I prefer. I won $20 by hitting an egg at 60 yards on the first shot. I have an Aimpoint PRO mounted on it.

The Sig 556 pistol with a brace is a great option for those of us who can’t get one of these, or don’t want to deal with the SBR nonsense! With an LPVO, 16oz water bottles at 200 yds are effortless. The LAW folder for an AR works great, since there’s no buffer back there. Personally, I love reciprocating charging handles. They’re a direct handle on the bolt, for a forward assist, chamber check, or clearing a malfunction. It fits in a small backpack, and as a pistol, a concealed carry permit makes it much easier to travel with than an SBR, and AR mags are available everywhere. Although, those Swiss mags are super cool… Strangely, the upper is the actual firearm, opposite of an AR. You could easily get a rifle lower with the folding stock, and have an awesome SBR (that folds the right way and clicks into the stock…) if you’re willing to do the paperwork.
