It's robot fighting time!
We know this one is a little off topic, but we needed a palate cleanser after Space Jam 2. Battlebots is our favorite sport here at Filmjoy and we want to tell you about it so we can nerd out together next season!
If you're craving some traditional MwM film content, why not check out Nebula? Our newest video is about why we think Prey is the best entry into the Predator franchise since the first film.

I'll always remember Jaime Hynamin creating Blendo, the bot so scary they gave him honorary first place two years in a row rather than let him fight. Be the reason a sport creates rules.

This is such an incredible video, and it brings me so much joy to see this wonderful sport being introduced so passionately to a new audience. ❤ it’s stuff like this that’ll get new eyes on the sport, and inspire new generations of builders to come❤️

It's important to note, on the UK version of Robot Wars, after a couple of series they dropped the obstacle course nonsense and it mostly became about straight combat (with the house robots causing chaos as an extra element of danger). Clarkson also left and was replaced by the much more enjoyable Craig Charles (of Red Dwarf fame) and is much more worth watching if you can find it.

Craig Charles’ era of Robot Wars was classic, and had some of the best competitors. Panic Attack? Razer? Chaos 2? All legends. I will never forget the moment when Hypno-Disc entered its first fight and *flayed its opponent alive.*

As a rabid hockey nerd with no hockey to watch, I spent a lot of the pandemic asking myself the question "why do I get so much out of watching other people play sports?" And I eventually came to the same conclusion as this video: spectator sports create the perfect environment for emergent narratives and personal interest stories. From the fan's perspective, the athletic aspects of traditional sports (e.g., jumping high or running fast) have always been less important than the dramatic aspects. It's funny when people insist that Battle Bots or E-Sports can't be real sports, because-- as this video proves beyond any doubt --the they're 100% sports in the only way that really matters. They create spontaneous and candid drama.

I was fortunate enough to be in a Boston theatre watching this year's finale, with the huge crop of local bots competing. Incredible experience - you'd have thought you were at a Sox game, the way the crowd cheered and screamed and went berserk for every local bot winning. (And when what happened to Riptide happened, the entire theatre started screaming rapturously, it was incredible)

Robot fighting has been a joyous part of my life since I was a kid. I used to get up at 6am on a Saturday to watch the BBC Robot Wars when it was hosted by Craig Charles, and was delighted when it came back a few years ago. I'm going to find some way to watch as much Battlebots as I can (from Australia) because one can never have enough robot fighting.

Absolutely fantastic video! Showing the Riptide vs Captain Shredderator fight under the line "Sometimes emotions run high" was a great Easter Egg for those in the know! There are a ton of local robot combat events happening all the time and at different weight limits that make it easier to get into. I actually just competed in my first event in the 1lb Plastic Antweight division last month and it was super fun!

From Robot Wars UK, Bigger Brother weathering the storm of favourite Hypno-Disc through ingenious driving to drive them into the pit and make the Grand Final in the Fifth Wars is one of my greatest sporting moments of all-time. Made all the more dramatic as Bigger Brother was a team of a father and his two young children who were watching their machine be torn into for most of the fight. Robot Wars is definitely more extra and Pro-Wrestling Pageantry at times but robot fighting in general is very very good.

Been watching BB since it was on Comedy Central as well as Robot Wars. It's absurd how much it's evolved. The robots are so powerful and durable that it's scary. The builders and drivers are so skilled and well prepared. This season of BB was easily the best I've ever witnessed and their was not one bad match in the playoffs and it was great seeing a non meta winner this year.

Brit here! I was obsessed with Robot Wars as a kid, and even saw a rare live show at a local leisure centre (Stinger won). The show’s revival a few years ago was incredible, with the final episode (before it was cancelled again) being genuinely the best episode of television I’ve ever seen. Having said that, I’ve never seen any Battle Bots and am now VERY keen to change this. Fellow brits: any tips on how best to watch BB legally over here?

I much prefer the British Robot Wars back when it was on the air personally, i prefered the ruleset, the house robots, the fact almost all the robots were being made by ex-enginiers in their sheds with the help of their kids. Even down to the time period where power limitations actually matters and we didnt have tiny batteries that could power everything.

I just got back into Battlebots a few months ago after years away, and yeah, it's immaculate. Not perfect, no sport is ever perfect, but it is immaculate in concept and purity. There's a hell of a rabbit hole you can go down, I was watching a video on Tested's channel a little while ago about Blendo, the first full-body spinner in the original San Francisco Robot Wars, which was of course created by Jaime Hyneman and Adam Savage of Mythbusters fame. Grant Imahara's iconic robot Deadblow was a repeat champion in the Comedy Central era as well with its terrifying pneumatic titanium spike hammer. That's the thing about Battlebots, you may not realize it at the time but the people who do this sport are some of the coolest people you can conceive of and it's worth watching just to see what they come up with next.

I've been lucky enough to see BattleBots in person TWICE. First time was the original series around 2002/03, then when they rebooted it in the mid 2010s I got to see it again. I happened to be neighbors with the builders of the old-school Mauler 51/50, which they demonstrated at our town picnic one year, just liquefying some melons, nbd. The second version was definitely more tailored toward TV, lots of stops and gos, prompted cheering for B-roll, filming the hosts and interviews... but when the action was on, OMG it was so awesome. What isn't captured in video is the loud sounds that demonstrate the true power of some of these machines... sometimes it would shake the whole building. Everyone should experience it at least once.

I adored Battlebots back in the Comedy Central days, and while I don't have much access to watch it since it's been revived i was so delighted to see it back on the air. I still have the old McDonalds Happy Meal toy they made of Diesector. My favorite was BioHazard, who is arguably the reason almost all bots have a self-righting mechanism on them nowadays; it was perfectly designed to get underneath the opponent and flip them over, and if they couldn't drive inverted they were doomed. It was so low to the ground, most bots didn't have weapons that could hit it, and eventually people started designing their weapons low with specifically BioHazard in mind. Untouchable and flipped the game on its head; that is BioHazard's legacy. All this to say, thank you Mikey for sharing this wonderful sport to so many, and bringing back these nostalgic memories. This one was for you, and it will hopefully bring many more eyes to this beautiful sport.

Nice video dude! I'm currently working on a retrospective series on the history of Robot Wars in the US and the UK, and I ended up interviewing Marc Thorpe as well as a bunch of other people who would make the jump from Robot Wars to BattleBots in the years come by! It's nice to see some kind of recognition of how great a sport robot combat is that isn't from someone deep inside the robot combat rabbit-hole (like me lol.) There's lots of great events held that have smaller weight classes where lots of the legends of BattleBots go to as well, NHRL being the one that stands out the most to me.

I should really watch that. My best memory from school was winning a robotics tournament in high school. The robots were in an arena divided by a central wall. Each side had some small football and soccer ball shaped balls. On the central wall was some goals. The goal is to put balls in your goals or on the enemy side. All robots shared the same tracked base design, but each team designed their own arm and grabbing mechanism. The ideal grabbing mechanism would be able to grab multiple balls of different sizes at once. Many teams went for simple hand-like designs, which were slow, finicky, and fragile. Others went for designs using rollers to pick up the balls, which were heavy and usually still fragile, but far more efficient and easy to design. The team that got second place used one of these, which had a tendency to break down the middle, but was otherwise great. Most teams also made theirs out of aluminum, and had parallelogram arm designs that were very light and easy to control. My team had a roller design with four wheels on the top part, and a bent sheet of steel bolted on for the bottom part of the grabber. Moving the arm too quickly would make the robot fall over, and not doing any control input would make the arm move down slowly. The arm was a single C-channel, mounted on a 1-speed gearbox we designed. If the robot turned quickly, it would twist about 30 degrees, and if it moved up too far, it would get stuck. But, the arm could pick up 2 balls at once, or a football and a normal ball. And, aside from getting stuck, it was extremely durable. I managed to fit a football in a goal not designed for it, and the only robot that could compete with it used a much nicer looking version of the same concept, that was lighter, and didn't want to twist itself apart or randomly move down. It came down to us winning by 1 point, after blocking the ball they tried to deposit on our side of the arena with our stuck arm. The ball fell down a couple seconds after the end of the match. We were also the only team without blueprints. We designed it as we built it, as I had taken auto shop, wood shop, and every metal shop class the school had to offer, along with a programming class. This is probably why it had so many issues, but my piloting skill barely made up for it.

One of my favorite moments was watching, I think Hypershock, attach a rake to their bot and used it to swat a flying minibot out of the air. My biggest issue is that the more wild bots are kind of disappearing in favor of the sheer power that are bar and drum spinners. Which is kind of why I loved Duck, which was just "lets build a ultra hardy bot and try to get the bar spinners to break themselves" Edit: lol should of watched the entire video first.

Grew up watching Robot Wars and it really took off in the UK when Craig Charles was brought on to host. By then it had lost the obstacle course bits and focused on the bit everyone wanted to see, with the twist of having a house team to go up against that it was incredibly satisfying to watch get decimated by some new weird competitor. And through it all Craig Charles was genuinely enthusiastic about all the carnage and drama that unfolded. I may not go out of the way to watch Robot Wars or Battlebots anymore but damn do I remember it fondly. All the best to you and yours, Mikey. Keep doing what you do best.

Oh yeah, I remember watching the Comedy Central version of Battlebots, and it was a blast back in 2001/2002. Remember the late Grant Imahara becoming champion with his pickaxe bot, Vlad the Impaler being a total menace, and Jamie Hyneman's bot being a destroyer a worlds inside the cage!

I remember watching Robot Wars when I was 19. We just watched for the actual fighting at the end. A Battlebots binge is coming, I think...

Thank you for talking about Battlebots! It’s amazing and stupid and hilarious all at the same time. I build robots in my spare time and one day I hope to get into beetleweight robot combat with my bro. Go Witch Doctor!

Here almost first. Thanks for all the great viewpoints Mikey. Still love your views on Arrival which has been my favorite movie for quite a few years and counting now. Blade Runner 2049 came close. Dune is busy making its case. Still nothing came along to really top it. I consider any vote from you a recommendation for at least an interesting watch and any video you make worth it by itself. Thanks and here's my little push to give your videos more of the audience they deserve.

This channel is truly a gift. Every time I give Mikey even minutes of time he manages to find ways to change my life for the better. Even with Battlebots, which, at the end of this video, turns out wasn’t even a challenge for him to do. Love you all, FilmJoy!

My family went to a live taping back in 2001 (I think?) back when Comedy Central hosted it. They filmed the entire season over 3-ish days. I remember 3 things: (1) This season was filmed on Treasure Island near Alcatraz. The San Francisco 49ers cheerleaders came to do some promos. Suddenly, everyone was very interested in football. Even my mom was like, "They have been bouncing around for 2 hours. How are they still gorgeous? Not a drop of sweat or a hair out of place." She then went and talked with them. Turns out the answers are "training" and "hairspray". (2) One of the bots eliminated in the pre-lims was call Tortoise. It was a giant spinner bot, with like a massive spinning stew pot as it's armor/weapon. I believe it was Vlad the Impaler that took it out. They hit so hard that a hooked blade (think raptor claw-sized) from Tortoise embedded itself in the bulletproof Lexan plexiglass. Without the plexiglass, that thing would've killed someone about 15 feet behind me and to the left. They had to keep the filming schedule up so, while they tried to source a new sheet of Lexan, they just put duct tape over the hole. The whole crowd on our side just started chanting, "Duct tape! Duct tape!" They asked us to stop because they couldn't use that audio without explaining it to the at-home crowd. Everyone was so polite and well-behaved that we actually stopped the chant. (3) "The Man Show" did a remote segment during filming. I got to meet Jimmy Kimmel and Adam Carolla. Not long after that, their political ideologies went in such wildly different directions that I think that was probably one of the last times they were in a room together.
