Like the same game but with pistol? I mean with this comment that beat saber is not the best, its not the worst, its not the first and it is indeed not the last, but i hate it because in ps4 you have to pay for every song that isnt included with the main game (both included and the ones you buy are not to many and are expensive) the ps4 does not include any mod, which is also the reason why i dissagree with the video is that all the maps he talk are from mods, and i could make that with every single game, the game without mods is limited, weird it still fun but just like any other non moded game, but as any other game it gets better with mods, but it would be like saying that fallout is the best game because the mods that it has, no its not, the game (fallout, i wont say which is just an example) is still a meh and it will be like that no matter how many mods you put in it, and i think the creator of the video didnt get this, he maybe thougth that the mods were part of the game but no they arent they are modifications to the base game they make the game limitless but at the same time they make it less "game", *_every day we stray further from the base game_* .

The way you described the concept of how you play, with muscle memory, motion grouping and song section memorisation, that's PRECISELY how playing piano works for me. All I could think while watching this was "seems someone discovered the joy of a good rhythm game". As someone who temporarily ruined their knees jumping around on DDR dancing mats in the early 2000's, I can say that this is not a new thing, but one that has been sadly ignored by the industry for a long time. When you're talking about learning the universal language of the game and being able to play maps and hard sequences without even really thinking about what you're doing, that's exactly what reading music is like for musicians. After a while, you get to a point where you can play very difficult passages on sight just because it's a pattern you've played so many times before. It's really liberating to get to a point where the stuff you struggled to do when you first started seems easy, and then the stuff you find hard at that point becomes just as easy later on, and on, and on, and on. Soon, the "super fast, scary technical runs" you had to practice for hours in high school are completely sight readable, and you can start spending your time focusing on the music instead of the technique. That's when any skill-based activity becomes truly rewarding, in my experience. Where you can put the technique out of your mind and be confident that you're capable of it and fully focus on expressing yourself through whatever it is you're doing, be it playing music or beat saber. I just love that feeling.

Crafting is like that for me. Like when I was working on my new aquarium stand a few days ago. I just turn on music and start working. And everything else stops being there. I love this video. Even if I find myself doing the rhythmically complex songs I can think of, or the trickiest map to pass, I *still* come back to those few maps that just make me dance my heart out, and I love it. 480 hours in, and I've loved it since day 1. Exploring different sides of the community has really shown me what it's truly like to co-exist in a community derived from passion - from the player side, to the mapper side, to the saber side, the platform side, the streamer side, you name it. The high intensity, even with slower maps, that comes from having to make large swings is addicting. There's really no other word for it. You mentioned mapping styles, and one (perhaps controversial) side that I am particularly in love with is an Eastern/Asian style of mapping, mappers like BBbear, ejiejidayo, and enjo3, who aren't afraid to just throw the book of patterns out of the window and say, just for a short moment, "You suck again! Lets learn again!". This game turned a person who was totally unwilling to exercise, or move really, to someone who is rearing to play Beat Saber again, and again, and *again*. This game has also given way to small communities of players that I would now call a second family to me - players who have undergone the same process as you, perhaps the guy below me in the comments, and even I have gone through, some even using the game to transform their lives. I think most of all, Beat Saber is a testament to diversity, and its love for it. Every mapper has their own style, every player has their own taste, every saber maker has their own inspiration.

@@williamsmith6921 I already checked, and no, they don't. They sell them for common, weak prescriptions, not for my terrible eyes. I _could_ get them custom-milled -- the place I get my glasses offers that service, and they'll even figure out the shape and install them for me -- but that's still another $100 on top of the already high price of VR. Plus, this is like Apple's dongles. I _have_ perfectly good glasses. They work beautifully for everything -- airsoft, driving, reading, even swimming. Why can't Vive just make something with slightly more room inside that actually fits over them? Why should I have to shell out extra money for the ~privilege~ of using a console I'd (at that point) already own? I flatly refuse to support that system. It's exploitative and borders on a scam.

They usually have a pretty decent amount of padding keeping the lenses from your face, which gives your glasses a nice buffer. You could always head down to a store or a VR arcade to try it out in person if you're worried, but I doubt you're gonna run into problems with any major headset. The only problem I've had is that I can't move the screen on the Index all the way in without fear of scratching the lenses with my glasses (when moved all the way in, they nearly touch your eyes normally), but I don't care about the tiny bit of screen real estate in your peripheral vision it hides.

As someone who played Dance Dance Revolution for years starting in 2002, a lot of what you said about Beat Saber _really_ resonated with me. I absolutely understand exactly what you mean about how certain "chunks", sets of notes in a sequence, become things that are built solely on muscle memory, that I could not tell you what the steps are that I am doing, but somehow, when my eyes behold a screen full of arrows, my feet just know where to go. I never was able to clear every song in the 2010 home release of DDR at the top difficulty, but I am very proud of finally beating MAX 300 by Ω on "Expert" in 2011. DanceDanceRevolution (2010) added an even more difficult "Challenge" difficulty setting. It followed the same beats, but it used 8 directions, including all four diagonal directions. I practiced on that for months before a foot injury forced me to stop sometime around 2012. I have never gotten back into it because since then, I have mostly lived in the non-ground floor of apartment buildings, so I cannot stomp the floor without causing undue disturbance to my downstairs neighbors. Even so, I totally get that absolutely addictive endorphin rush of completing a challenge that, once upon a time, was impossible for my body to accomplish. I am so glad that you got to experience something like that. :)

Most people tie EDM to generic House music, I'm not sure what genres this game uses but that track by Fox Stevenson is a perfect fit for a game about slashing coloured blocks with vibrant neon swords. I got Audiosurf a while back, but that game just randomises some notes, so you never feel like you're 'playing' the song- but this game? Beat Saber looks like exactly what I've always wanted. Great review and very impressive gameplay.

I love how you touched on the way we get better at the game. I'm at the point where I don't have time to consciously register what I'm doing, I'm quite literally on autopilot and it's the best feeling in the game imo. Another great point is how important it is that the game stays fun over time, and isn't just something you play for a while and then put away. Those are the games that count, and in VR, Beatsaber is the only one that I continue to play on a regular basis. I've played Beatsaber constantly since it released about half a year ago, and other vr games I've played at most for two weeks before dropping them.

I absolutely love your authenticity in this video. I just recently got an Oculus and started playing beat Saber for the first time, and I've had trouble describing how I really feel about it other than I always want to play it, even after it makes me arms hurt from playing too much. This video summed it all up for me and I can easily feel your passion for the game. Love this video and I'm excited to see the rest of your content.

When I first heard of beat Sabre I thought it looked boring and didn’t what to by it. But later one of my friends was talking about how good the game was so I decided to pick it up, and now I play it literally every day.

Deep down every VR Player is a Beat Saber player. The one VR Game that manages to nail the word FUN into the game perfectly. I simply cannot find myself to get upset in the game at all and I cant find myself to not want to go back for more. You have done the Developers of Beat Saber proud! I don't know why 87 people disliked your video but I guess you will always have them. Well done! you have my sub ^_^

I find it so interesting that you compare the overwhelming nature of learning expert rhythm tracks to riding roller coasters - it's so goddamn apt. You say this is a love letter to Beat Saber, but it really feels like it applies to all of rhythm gaming. I remember concentrating so hard when trying to play My Name is Jonas in Guitar Hero 3 to the point where my tongue fell out of my mouth and I couldn't divert enough attention away to close it. You mention a love for the custom-creating community, a love which I also share for the Stepmania community and the C3 group for Rock Band (the latter of which I've actually contributed to). Hell, I was thinking of how someone charted an hour long 50k+ note song that actually crashes Rock Band 3 when you brought up the Shrek chart (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJ27pKZmoKuAhtE ). I think what sets Beat Saber apart, though, is how crazy intuitive it is. Game literacy is a real problem in entrenched genres, and rhythm games with a high skill ceiling tend to have a high skill floor (it's hard to get a grasp on the up/down arrows in DDR, the orange button in GH, etc). The only rhythm game I've seen with as low a skill floor as Beat Saber is Dancerush Stardom, which solves the up/down arrow confusion of DDR by removing them entirely (kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZzWiYhqZ9F4eLs ). But that's a game strictly relegated to arcades for the foreseeable future, so it'll never enjoy the benefits of a custom community. It's great to see a Western rhythm game like Beat Saber dominate social media recently; it's amazing that a rhythm game is proving to be a killer app for VR.

Dude, i was really edging on vr for the longest time, and then this popped up in my recommended, and i just wanna say, thanks man, a lot. my oculus came in 2 days ago and i've played this game near non-stop and i just can't help myself, and i gotta say, i'm speechless the "how did i do that!?" or "how am i doing this!?" feeling has to be the most satisfying feeling i've ever had in any video game, and i can't wait to master this fine art (if i don't break the controllers due to the small room size that is, hahah) on a small side note, what's the song you start out with at 1:40? can't seem to find it anywhere P:

Yup, that's how you get people 100%ing through the fire and flames on guitar hero- if you've attempted it before you most likely failed it the first time (i know I did) But they would have no idea how to replicate the movements by memory even though their fingers always seem to know where they need to go

Hey Jacob. I found your channel a couple days ago through your Shadow of the Colossus "Last Great Secret" video and I devoured your backlog in a day. Your content is fantastic and thoughtful and not usually the type of gaming or even game design content I enjoy watching but you just present it so well. And I've been meaning on the edge of getting a vr headset to play beatsabers for months now but this video is what tipped me over the edge. It's been a week now and this past week has been the most I've exercised in... well my entire life. I'm a big dude and exercise has always eluded my motivational centers but this game has made exercise fun. I'm still at about hard difficulty but I go to work everyday and I cannot wait to get home and play beatsaber. I play it multiple times a day, on weekends, when I'm stressed. So I just wanted to say thank you for your channel, and thank you for finally convincing me to pick up this wonderful game.

Noice. Might have heard this the day before the panic at the disco update and now I’m even more hyped! It’s weird how I’ll literally spend anything to get these songs and feel more than rewarded for doing it. It’s not like getting call of duty $40 dlc’s with a single zombies map for each and getting petty time out of it. These songs are beyond priceless to me and I think to you as well.whatever happens to beat saber later, I know that the community will still be there, and Tempex will probably post some cooler videos on these new things. Man, 2019 is a great year to be alive.

by the time I was at 1:45 and on I knew that this wasn't just a meme, but instead a narrative taken and set to a symphony comparable to the greatest musical dramas of Wagner. This is disturbingly well done and somehow it makes the original video even better.

Thank you for putting in words what I feel. Beat Saber is the first (to my knowledge) way to experience music/beat through a visual medium that makes the spectator part of the spectacle. You can certainly dance to a song but with Beat Saber, you are also the reason the song continues. I hope the devs find a way to make modding part of the game (like Skyrim or Minecraft) and that mappers get rewarded with fame and fortune too. They deserve it!

I know this is a relatively old video so my comment's unlikely to be seen by many, but it holds at least a little bit of significance to me in that for the longest time I hated beat saber. like many things, it horribly clogged my youtube recommendations after just one or two videos I watched and decided I wasn't interested in, but became too buried in my history to remove, and boy were these recommendations persistent. When I binge watched all of your videos, I avoided it out of that grudge. I finally decided to watch it today for no reason in particular and was pleasantly surprised to hear you mention furi, one of my favourite games of all time. You seem to have enjoyed it well enough yourself, though being used in comparison to the subject it isn't portrayed exactly with the feelings I have towards the game, and there's no real problem with that. The comparison is actually really something special though, as often when I was playing I felt that 'being in the zone' feeling many are describing in beat saber and it's without a doubt a core aspect of the gameplay in both games. But at the same time it makes me focus on.... the ways experiences can differ between two people, I guess? It's hard to describe, but it's like... there's that one german word that means "the realization that every single person around you lives a life just as rich and full as your own", but it's going further than just realizing, and thinking about the details of that. I don't know, maybe I'm just thinking about it like this because I have autism so I (maybe by necessity) think a lot about feelings, and the way people feel, and why they feel, and obviously I'm not a patron and am in no position to be one so I'm in no position to demand a video topic from you at all, but I wonder very much what a video about furi would look like coming from you. The narrative is simple enough once you have the full picture that I'm not sure if it'd have material you're interested in talking about, but Furi is just one of those things that despite all relevant discussion about it being over and done with, I can't drag my mind away from. I have a similar feeling about Final Fantasy XIII - while many criticisms of it were shallow and not properly formed in the short period after its release where a bulk of the critics came from, there have been thorough dissections of exactly why it's not a very good game and most people who participated or spectated those discussions would probably have a sophisticated understanding of the ins and outs of what makes the game unmotivating to play. While Final Fantasy XIII used to be a game that was very important to me and I've never really stopped liking it, I did make the transition from defending it from all criticism to recognizing it's a pretty bad game while still somewhat liking it and knowing how to like it, but there's more to that feeling for me - despite understanding, I need to understand *more*. there's still a *more* detailed picture here, both of what the game was trying to achieve both on a macro and micro scale, what the game actually communicates vs what it tries to communicate within the context of being a corporate product, and the list goes on, and I just can't stop thinking about it. Anyway, I think that's all I really have to say about all this. I look forward to your next work and hope you have a good day ^^

After watching your passionate review of this game however, I'll definitely go back. And needless to say, you've earned yourself another subscriber.

Beat Saber is the perfect VR game and I play it every day. I cannot get enough of it. One of the things VR breaks in immereion is force feedback or lack there of. If you defend an attack with a shield, you don't feel that feedback. You don't feel feedback in Beat Saber but because you are (let's be honest here) holding lightsabers, you expect not to have feedback. The explosion of the blocks, the simplicity and that feeling of getting through hard songs is just so satisfying. Ofcourse with custom songs you have the risk of crappy maps. Hint, download the playlists. They have loads of really good songs.
