Sorry I am two years late, but I just discovered your videos. I too am an older guy (55) still fulfilling my childhood dreams. I have an old Mamod Steam Roller-mid 1960's vintage that I just cleaned up. Mine did not have a roof so I made a reasonable copy from tin plated steel & brass. Then it was repainted and new seals. Then the fun part, modifications. I drilled the "scuttle and added handrails and a hitch. Next, I built and added steering gear/chains modeled off of my Wilesco Tractor. The finishing touch was a chain to hold the hitch pin and a nice erector set trailer that attaches to the Mamod or the Wilesco perfectly. I absolutely love these mechanical things

After watching your series on the Mamod Traction Engine rebuild, I started looking around for one on Ebay. I found one in excellent condition at a good price and bought it. I steamed it up with a alcohol (meths) burner and got it running. Pretty neat litle thing. My wife sez its cute, which is true. I ordered some rubber tires and a brass smokestack cowl for it. Thanks for the rebuild series, and all your posts on steam subjects

Yes there is something Magical about these simple engines. A Tip for newbies if your boiler runs dry let it cool before you add water. I have seen some that have had a handpump added, which if it is used when the boiler has gone dry can lead to problems.

Hi Keith, wonderful! I love how you pursue the dreams of your youth. I can bear with you, I am currently building a model of an Dutch Garratt (rail) locomotive, LTM 51, giving substance to a resolve I made back in 1974 when I first saw a drawing of it: “One day I will build a model of this loco”. but so it goes with model builders, we have loco motives 😃

This too brings back many happy memories but perhaps from only 45 years ago ! One trick my father always used for his basset lowke pot boiler O gauge locomotives and some twin cylinder oscillating locomotives made by a company called Bar-Knight was a few drops of steam oil in with the boiler water. Both had crude hydrostatic lubricators I recall but I don’t think they were very effective. As grown up engineer now, I can think of many reasons why this should be a bad idea. Your video highlighted priming which you would have thought would be terrible but strangely this was not a problem and the engines went so much better. We always emptied any water out after a steaming. I used it for the Mamod with good results. The smoke box would get a bit oily eventually though which suggested the process worked.

I was able to confirm with my father in our lock down Skype tonight that this technique really helped with the 0-4-0 Bar-Knight (Clyde model dockyard) engines. These had two cylinders larger than the TE1A but small wick burners nothing like the output of the vaporising one on the Mamod so steaming was marginal and minimising friction was essential if the train was not to get stuck in the most awkward place under the high level section of the inside portion of the layout. I have such vivid memories of these and the Basset Lowkes thundering around the track. I think I was hooked on steam from then on.

55yrs ago I always purposely overfilled the spirit burner with the idea that the engine would run longer and we would get further down the street before the flame would inevitably go out and I would have to carry the engine home. Watching this has made me want to put my Mamod in steam again but I have no spirit and the shop is probably closed due to lockdown. Strange times! Oh how I wish I were 10 years old again. Alan.

So, I watched Steve (a very able clock technician) on The Repair Shop perplexed by a steamed-up Mamod not suddenly bursting to life without even turning it through a stroke. At least he knew to ensure that the safety valve was working. Those people needed your experience.

Interesting about the oiling on these low pressure engines. I have a couple of Wilesco engines which will run for around 1 1/2 hours on one boiler fill. The instructions say to lubricate every 10 minutes which means releasing all the pressure from the boiler. I run them slowly and only lubricate them at the start. In theory the huge D32 could run all day with it boiler feed pump but I always think it is best to stop it after about an hour to fill the lubricant up. I am curious to know if it would run longer now and not come to any harm as the water will provide enough lubrication. These engines also run on about 15 psi.

On my latest Mamod steam rail car I popped on two taps, one for steam in and one for water in. I made a one way valve block so I could use the Mamod cylinder as a hand water pump. (If you fancy running longer or harder) On the real ones I have seen two taps with a chamber in between and a funnel on top. It lets you drop oil charges under pressure like an air lock on a submarine.

I bought a box of bits of Mamods for £20 at a local antiques fair. Out of it I re-built five engines, including an SE1. OK they need finishing by painting, but not sure if I'll bother because my painting skills are rubbish.

I had a mamod before it but I think my real liking of model steam started when I got my first Wilesco aged 10. been a few years since I've steamed anything, really must get around to it soon.

It is usually the reversing linkage that needs re-aligning, or a bent port face.

Awsome! Don't worry i still alway, with almost not even one singe exeption, owerfill the lawmover gasolin tank... ha ha. I fully agree, i hawe some used radioequipment i plant to mount on the Basset and Bowman locomotives in the future, and i even started to build a computer controlled system for the H0 scale locomotives, but i decided to make a complete owerhaul and install some very old hand controls for the analog parts since it is so much more fun controlling the locomotives, switches and signals by hand!

@@keithappleton you can still buy a replacement water level plug off the interenet i know this because i got one for my early Mamod steam roller thats if you don't want to use that brass bolt any more
