Another triumph for superior mobility! It looks as if Blackburne overestimated his Queenside prospects. Steinitz was able to switch theaters of battle from Queenside to Kingside, while Blackburne allowed his developed forces to be locked out of that zone.

These closed, sharp games are so difficult to play. These guys are truly ahead of their times.

great game! thanks Mato. I saw a few nice moves that weren't used in the game. A very sharp game. Amazing that it was 1869!

Poor Blackburne. His king was defended by pieces ... that were on the wrong side of the board.

After g4, black can also attack the queen on H8, but you still have G5+ followed by taking the bishop with check

At @05:44 if BLACK had opted for rook h8, instead of resigning, he could have won queen and eventually the game.

Blackburne was a better tactician than Steinitz but Steinitz was a stronger strategist and better on defense.

4:46 After 19: Qh7 Wouldn't it be better if black played 19: ... Qe5? This way, the queen can come to the black king's defense and avoid letting the knight on a3 to gain a tempo and become more active. Even after what was the dreaded 20: Nf4 black can simply react with 20: ... Qf6. If then 21 Nh5 black just plainly reacts with 21: ... Qg6 (or Qh6) offering a queen exchange and thereby greatly increasing the safety of the black king.
