Great video Bruce! As somone who is fairly new to the hobby I have only ever flown electric and knew almost nothing about combustion engines. This video was so well done that I feel like I've learned more on this one subject than from watching dozens of other videos I've watched in the past. Keep up the great work educating us all. And now, I think I have to watch it again, just because it was so well done!

Thanks Bruce! I started out on these engines, but soon switched over to electric when I rebooted the hobby as an adult. Your video brings out the positive and interesting aspects of this technology, which is nice, because this far I've only seen combustion model engines as a former necessary evil.
@turbochevelle56417 жыл бұрын
It's not hard to ignite nitromethane under compression. The reason top fuel dragsters have suck high voltage ignition systems is that they are trying to ignite so much fuel it is like trying to start a fire in the rain. The engine is consuming so much fuel ignition has to be plasma to ensure complete combustion and not washing the spark out.

Love the video! I started flying model airplanes just a couple years ago, I started with electric foamies and I thought I'd never fly a nitro plane, they are just too messy and I didn't want the hassle and everything. A year later I got my hands on a Kyosho Calmato A Sport with a .46 2-stroke, and that was it for me, I never looked back. Now I fly ONLY nitro-engine planes most of which are with 4-stroke engines. You can't beat the sound, the feeling and the exhaust smell of a nitro plane with any electric. I love flying them, tuning them, taking them appart and back again. Next step for me would be bigger scale planes with 4-stroke gas engines, Hobbyking has some very nice looking and cheap gas engines!

What a great video mate,that's exactly why I run nitro,it can be a serious pain in the arse but when everything is good it's awesome,I think with aeroplanes there's enough to worry about as a beginner without having to learn the dark art of nitro engines,that's why I'd pick a brushless plane to learn with but with a buggy I run nitro every time,I think the engine is an important part of the hobby.👍👌✌😊

More ? YES PLEASE. After 3 years on electrics I started with my first Nitro plane about 2 months ago. Irvine Tutor 40 for 2 weeks (sentimentality... had bought the thing 12 years ago), then a Kyosho Calmato Alpha 40 with an ASP 52 and OH MY GOODNESS !!! do I ever LOVE that plane. My interest is essentially Precision Aerobatics and the Calmato is great for that. I am NOT in love with the the carb though, it seems difficult to get smooth consistent and reliable transitions from low to high revs and I believe that you criticised and earlier iteration of the engine for precisely that fault. I love the smell in the car on the way home afterwards.

Absolutely loved the video Sir Bruce! Having said that, the reason I loved it was NOT because it was stuff I didn't already know besides one 'minor' facet, but because it WAS stuff I knew, BUT stuff I knew from compiling tid-bits of info over the years & the fact that all to often, folks skimp out on bits, or leave bits out because they themselves don't know what they just missed out on- this clip had just about ALL the bits needed to know (in a general sence) of small engines- THANK YOU! That one minor facet you touched on that I'd never heard of before is the Aspin 4-stroke engine- I know about rotary valved 2-strokes & sleave valved 4-strokes & even a rotary valved 4stoke V-twin where the valve is run at 90° to the bore line, but now Im going to have to spend my afternoon reading up about Aspin.... Thankyouthankyouthankyou for that Sir Bruce! :D So- yes please, more nitro stuff, but possibly not before we finally get to see the $200 'real jet' actually flying on a very special Fixed-wing Friday Episode! Or would it be a Flaming Foam Friday? lol! Thanks again! :)

Hi Bruce. Very informative video thanks!.. I can remember that my dad had an old model engine that ran on ether. Very noisy thing (basically did not have an exhaust). It had a kind of screw on the top of the cylinder. The more you tighten the screw the faster it went. I was always fascinated as a kid when my father would get this thing going. No glow, just ignited by the compression I guess. The engine must have been from the 50's or 60's.

As usual learnt a lot from this, thanks. Not sure I'll ever try nitro as population density in the UK means we are never more than 50 yards from a moany bastard and most of my flying spots are unofficial but with the knowledge and tollerance of the farmer, I would not expect them to accept the noise. I could go and join a club, but then I could also take up knitting or bus spotting.
