A few years ago a friend had the steering head bearings on his bike go out of adjustment really often and quickly. In the end we decided to strip it down and change them rather than just adjust them. Turned out someone had put the bottom tapered roller bearing in the wrong way round!

Having spent years in Ford parts departments that’s the warning that that part is going obsolete. Something like that is hopefully available in the after market. I had a 1974 F-100 4x4 with power steering. The ram would wear the shaft at the seal from dirt getting in the lip and the constant movement of centering the wheel. It went from just under $200.00 to over $600.00 before it was discontinued.
@CrashRacknShoot2 жыл бұрын
If that's the case it sucks, but I'd also say 60ish years of parts being made for the same truck is a pretty damn good run lol.

Just goes to show that not every problem is in your head, much of it is situational. I'd be very interested to see what sort of creative solution for the front leaf you can come up with! Maybe there are uprated components that would handle the weight better, or perhaps a whole different setup would work? I look forward to finding out ^_^ Kudos always to Duane, that hammer sync with the music and the return to the real world with the sweeping was excellent, as per usual!

Johnny is lookin good and and glad it’s rear axle and brakes are now properly sorted. This old international is lookin mighty fine. Question I have is the lower body trim molding really spruces up the look of the truck. Are you going to round up the missing pieces and re attach them on both sides? Not expecting a show quality restoration, just find some decent reasonable intact pieces and re install them. That would make this truck look quite special. Those corvette wheels go with the body lines quite well. This trucks style looks very good lowered with the slight nose down look. Looks like a proper street going no nonsense pickup.

just a heads up on your front brakes..I used wilwood 6 piston grand national race calipers a few times. they dont have external seals to keep out road debri. if yours are the same , I would reccomend keeping an eye on them , to catch any corrosion that might be happening , before it locks up a piston..
@chickensfloat74272 жыл бұрын
Ya, here in the salt, this liquid salt drys and turms into a fine powder. It creeps its way everywhere and rusts up at least 1 caiper a year. The jeeps do it all the time, they have a chevy style fromt caliper, but even the modern cars we have issues. Our 02 honda, 03 toyota, and our 04 ford. I prefer drum brakes because they never rust up, or if they do its just the ajuster, your rear brakes go out of ajustment and you get a spongy pedal and poor brakes cause the all the fluid is going to the rear and 80% of braking is done by the front
@kenny32172 жыл бұрын
I feel your pain on those drums, they used to be stupid cheap and when I went to order new ones for my Scout they were $350 each at the time, it also has a Dana 44 in the rear. Fortunately they were rusted and unevenly worn but had plenty of material to turn so got them machined at O'reilly for $20 and they are working great.
@JTL13132 жыл бұрын
For optimum performance the new pads should be machined (arched) so the the radius of the shoes match the drums. Otherwise you will not have a full contact patch and insufficient coefficient of friction.

2 Questions.... 1) What lent to your decision of fore vs aft (3 or 9 o'clock) since either works. 2) Why not change out to a proper posi for the Dana for better street use now? Edit: Why not move up to DOT 5 now? Also, you may want to consider giving it enough rear bias to allow the truck to squat evenly under braking instead of nose diving. Just a thought Old man to a younger one. Love your channel. You showed me a new trick that after wrenching since 1973 I did not know, Thank you for sharing.

@jonnyonwheels2 жыл бұрын
The issues I have about doing rear disc conversions like this with off the shelf parts is no parking brake provision (needed for inspection in my state) and now the wheels are lug-centric and no longer hub centric like factory wheels. “IF” you find yourself chasing a vibration coming from the rear of Johnny with his new rear axle, it’s probably due to the rear wheels not being hubcentric anymore. I went through it with aftermarket wheels before until I found a good source for hubcentric rings to fit almost any centerhub/wheelbore size combination. I’ve seen it with everything from 4lug up to 8lug axles/wheels so keep that in mind.

What are you using for a parking/emergency brake since the disc brake change over? Dodge rear ends have a shoe type emergency/parking brake that fits into the inside of the rotor but with no backing plate you can't utilize it here. You could possibly use the backing plates off a Dodge disc brake rear end by modifying them to fit the Dana 44.

You might want to add a racecar front to rear brake bias adjuster if you need more or less rear brakes. This can really help the handling in turns by allowing you to dial in the bias where you want just the right amount of front to rear brake balance to aggressively set up the vehicle entering turns. You don't want the brakes to cause understeer and you sure don't want them causing the rear to step out.
