Kind of surprised how you reacted to that Ketil and Arnheid scene at the end. I mean she is a slave, she must consent to whatever the master does. You only talked about what Einar will feel about it. What about Arnheid's feelings?

I almost completely agree with you, I would just shy away from using the word “consent”. She’s obliged to do what he says as his slave. I wouldn’t say it’s consensual, not that I think you meant to say it that way

What about Arnheids feelings? I mean it’s kinda obvious she probably doesn’t wanna be doing that. It’s not obvious though how Einar will react, and we know at this point in the story he can get angry and resort to violence.

To be fair, at this point, Einar's feelings are more narratively interesting to discuss. We don't know too much about how Arnheid feels in this situation (without hindsight)

we all know how Arnheid feels because we’ve seen how women are treated in this time and Swaniis already covered that. itd be a bit redundant to restate the obvious when the more narratively interesting and discussion driven topic would be to see how Einar would react to it.

That was basically a negociation. Snake, Pater and Ketil want to reduce the sentence down from dismembering, but they have to come up with something violent enough for Thorgil to accept. If they try to let the kid go scot-free, Thorgil would ask for way above 10 hits in return, so they came up with 10 as the minimum he would agree to. Which is also why Ketil went from 5 to 10 when thinking about it, he knew he wouldn't be able to command authority over the farm or Thorgil with a joke of a punishment.

Ketil’s kindness and good nature stems from weakness. It’s not the same as when Thors denounced war even though he was the strongest warrior of the Jomsvikings. There is a difference. A silver lining that I hope you’ll grasp as the show goes on. But oh well, at least what he did was better than Thorgil, who is clearly of the typical Viking mentality. Enjoying the reactions. It's not fair to attribute all of ketil's kindness to weakness. He's a genuinely kind person in many ways. It's not meant to be black and white these are all complex and flawed people with both love and hate inside them. Humans.

Ketil is a decent but flawed man.. But he still adheres to the customs of his people, which is built upon strength and hierarchy. The pressure of his culture is still dictating his behavior in the end. Hence him exacting a strict punishment for the kid, perpetuating slavery despite being wealthy enough, and last but not least, the reveal of Arnheid being the object of his emotional and sexual desire. When Einar raised the question about Arnheid's deal with the master, the final scene sort of gives the definite answer on that, and it sucks. Thorfinn and Einar watching the wheatlings grow is iconic. So wholesome.

It's crazy that those kids, waiting for their punishment for stealing food, are next to Ketil and his family who have more than enough food And like Ketil said himself, he's a coward. He's a good guy, but still a coward, intimidated by his son and wanting to look big and bold in front of others. He is no better than his youngest son, Olmar, who is also a coward, intimidated by his brother and wanting to look powerful in front of others
