I just wanted to tell a story about a really bad flight of mine. We were flying delta and the flight was delayed two hours. We were flying on an md80, and after a smooth flight and landing, both of the left tires exploded and the plane skidded to a stop. We were on that plane for 3 hours in the middle of a taxiway. We deplaned, and had to wait another 7 hours for our next flight. Luckily they compensated with free first class and hotels. This is why we love delta 👍🏻 😒

A lot of times the ground agents don't know either. They are waiting to see what dispatch will proved. I used to be a Gate agent with American. We had a 10 hour delay once becuase our plane came in broken and dispatch kept pushing but the delay last minute. In the end they ferried a plane to us but we were kept in the dark for hours just like the passengers.

I could be wrong here, but I *think* the more clarified truth is...they have a policy that doesnt let you record certain things in the airport. And while it is not illegal to video in this circumstance, the company themselves has the right to kick you out if you break their policy. If you DON'T leave then you are trespassing, in which they can call the police to have you removed. Either way she handled it all wrong.

This just popped up on recommendations for some reason. But, the airlines aren't trying to deliberately inconvenience passengers. As a former travel journalist, I have a lot of friends and in-laws who work for airlines. The flight attendants and pilots have to bid on the trips they do. There are pilots on standby. There are flight attendants on standby. They have apps for the airlines they work with where they can see the upcoming trips and choose which ones they want. But, there is also seniority, so not all pilots can automatically jump on the next flight. And the crew also has to figure out how to get home after their multi-day shifts end, often "dead-heading" on other flights. So that factors into which flights they choose to work. The FAA has strict rules on how many hours per month pilots can fly (usually no more than 100 hours per month, and that's only flight time, not waiting time or commuting), plus the amount of sleep they must get. Often, with late night flights, the crew might have exhausted their hours for the day and cannot just switch planes with the passengers. Often you need a whole new crew. Last year my Spirit flight was delayed due to a mechanical issue, and it took 14 hours for the airline to get a new crew together. The flight was only 2 hours, but we waited until 1am to get on the plane. I was fine. I understand how it all works. Other passengers felt attacked by the airline, demanded compensation and were rude and threatening to the gate staff. Honestly I would rather wait for another plane and a well-rested crew than be forced onto a plane that isn't safe or adequately staffed. We did get vouchers for future flights which I used, and we got food vouchers which got us all a nice cup of coffee and a sandwich.

Also, per my friends who work as pilots at Southwest, they said that American Airlines pilots get paid from the minute they walk down the jet bridge to the moment they walk back up it (whereas other airlines pay the pilots they minute they take off to when they land). Apparently AA pilots are the slowest when taxiing on the runway since they are paid for those minutes. :-P Delays do suck. I think the worst for me is that I can't just sleep it out until we take off because I'm always having to check when the information changes. So I'm triple exhausted when I arrive eventually. But I've been to 89 countries and have flown hundreds of times, dozens of airlines, including 60 times last year on Spirit. I do feel for gate attendants. They bear the brunt of the frustration and often only know what they see on their computers.

If a flight is delayed so long that a new crew and pilots need to be reassigned or bid on the flight causing a delay that is over 8 hours long the flight should be considered canceled and tickets refunded. I understand that as a service there are required regulations for the safety of the staff and crew. But please understand that as a consumer these flights cost a lot of money for a subpar service. If the normal issues of cramped seating, and baggage losses/damages are added on to the ever more common issue of flight delays the cost is absurd. People choose a flight for there speed. If people were willing to wait 8 to 14 hours in addition to travel time to reach their destination more people would take buses, boats and trains.
