Hi Nigel.. Thank you for your invaluable advice so far! I've read your book as well as followed videos and have found that *spoiler * it works! I do have something I would like advice on though . We have a 7 year old rescue cat who was slowly thawing with the addition of our now 7 month sproodle. The dog has been amazing at staying calm around the cat (cat is super wary and hisses when pooch gets too close) but the dog is a bit obsessed with following the cat around. The last few days this has spilled into a bit of a fight instigated by the cat. Normally the dog just doesn't do anything but doesn't know what to do and we can get in between and distract the dog. We were doing well so started to keep dog gates open and they could tolerate being near each other, but now I'm winding it back a few steps because the dog started to chase back the cat and got a bit growly with her. She obviously got clawed by the cat but it's undone the progress we made. Dog gate is back closed. I am distracting dog when cat is around with a bit of training. Do she knows the cat is there but is focused on me instead. I don't want to be worrying about keeping them apart when we're not around. I don't know if you have any advice?
@nigelreed2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for getting the book. We have to do it with 1. (when you don't have time) a stair gate so the cat can roam freely and get used to the dog in it's own time and 2. (when you do have time) with lessons in stages by having the dog on lead to show him how to behave. If you're calm you can stay in. If you're too much then out to have a think. Show, show, show is key.

I have never owned a dog that didn't 'love everyone', until now. She has been through various training from puppy manner to advanced tricks. She is an amazing girl, does great in so many way. However, she 'airbites'. Not always, but anytime is too much. There's a couple of people she just isn't warming up to, and if strangers approach her when we are out on a walk, she barks. How do I reassure her that if I say 'it's ok'.. it IS ok?
@nigelreed2 жыл бұрын
Bu showing her that you will protect her and giving her time to accept people at a distance only moving forward once she is comfortable.

We have a rescue dog who is 19 months old and he has been with us for just over 3 months. He is a miniature schnauzer a and has now settled reasonably well at home with our other 2 dogs of the same breed. He is very affectionate ,loves to play and is a delight in many ways. However he is clearly anxious about many things outside the home and will bark at anyone even 50 yards away in a ferocious manner. He responds very well with dogs off lead in an appropriate manner but the second the owner approaches he will try to lunge and jump at them continually barking until we are a good distance away. In watching your videos that I have recently discovered I can see that I have gone too fast in taking him out for walks I had naively thought that being with our other calm secure dogs he would copy them to a certain extent. We do not know what happened to him as a puppy but it would seem that he is extremely frightened of humans and their voices particularly deep ones so we can only assume he has been physically as well as emotionally abused. His continuous barking really gets us down but we feel so sorry for him and determined to do what is right for him. Your videos have already helped me and I wondered if there was any other suggestions to help him with his fear when he seems to have really bonded with us and comes happily to us . How can we help him to learn that we won't let anyone hurt him again. I sit just patience and time ?

Thank you Nigel for your training tips. I just recently found them and bought your book last week. The videos are awesome and have really helped me with leash pulling and barking/lunging at my front window. I have an 8 month old GS mix and he's wonderful but socialization has been hard with covid protocols & lockdown. He's a bit shy and will bark and lunge at people who approach us. He doesn't do it on walks when people walk past, or when he meets people with their dog. He only seems to feel threatened by people who walk up to us or if we approach them. Any tips or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you!!

need guidance with greeting guests at the door and fence fighting. I have 2 large dogs and they swarm the door when guest arrive and the guests can hardly get through the door. They jump on them and then start wrestling with each other and act crazy. In the yard we have dogs on 2 sides that constantly fence fight if they are out at the same time and the 3rd side is a sidewalk where many people and dogs walk by on their way to the park. They bark, run the fence and bite at the pickets. it's embarrassing 😳

Hi Nigel, I'm reading your book and find it very helpful in understanding my dog better. She's a rescue from Romania, we had her for a year and for most of that time she was shy and timid, but friendly. In recent few weeks she started to be very confident and react to other dogs, barking and snapping, even dogs she met and played with before, and dogs that are submissive - she snapped at one that was literally on its back in front of her. So any help with reactivity issues would be great. Thank you!😊
@nigelreed2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for getting my book. If she is being reactive you have to react before her. If you're too late take over. My 'diary of a rescue dog' series gives many examples on this.

Thank you very much for your helpful videos! We've had our first dog for about 8 weeks now. She's a rescue, and really excellent, but has some anxiety (understandably so!). Your videos have really helped me reduce her pulling when on walks, and understand that a lot of her "excitement" when encountering other dogs is anxiety and stress. I appreciate that you explain the WHY of the training things you do and that you help us understand the emotions the dogs are experiencing. Thank you, and please keep the videos coming...I'm always excited when there is a notification for a new video!

Hi, watched some of your lead training videos, I love your teaching style. I haven’t looked through all your playlist yet but any help with a puppy getting used to another dog. I currently have a 5 and half year old beagle and brought a German shepherd puppy into our family. They are not too bad together and have played but the gsd just keeps pushing it too much with the beagle and it starts getting more aggressive. The beagle is giving warning but it’s not taken seriously. I have tried burning off the new puppy’s energy before they be together but still the same problem. Done distraction with toys but gsd just wants to keep pushing it with beagle. Will this behaviour get better over time maybe? Any help from others appreciated. 🙃

I don't have any videos on puppies currently but plan to make some in the future. If the puppy is getting too much put him in another room for a bit. And repeat the consequence until he realises what he should be doing i.e leaving the beagle alone.

Yes! I'd like to know that too as my dog suddenly hates all waiters when they come out outside in cafes to take an order. It's very sudden, he's used to cafes since 8 weeks and never had a bad experience... As a matter of interest - is your dog anywhere between 6 and 14 months old? Mine is 12 months. @Nigel, is there really this thing called the secondary fear stage? If so, how to help a dog to go through it please? There is very little info online.

@nigelreed2 жыл бұрын
Hi Raymond, no I don't believe there is such a thing as a secondary fear stage. Only a dog that thinks it has to protect which can occur at any stage in their life. Show your dog that you will protect them and boost their confidence in their environment in stages and they will stop.

I really have to thank you for all your videos. You helped us very much with our agressive reactive Malinois mix. They were like a revelation for us. We thought that she was agressive by nature as all were telling us that. But by seeing Dante we realised that she was like that because she was bitten by a dog when she was 3 months old when in fact all the reactivity started. For 4 months we are working with her after your method and we really have great results. Now she is barking just at some dogs that are like she was at the beginning and she started even to make some friends. We still have much work, but you gave us hope and we won't give up. Thank you very much again! 🙂

My dog looks for something, someone, or another dog to bark at. He does this outside as well, but not as often as inside. One of the things I have done is pet him and hold him, but he does his best to escape my hold and bark. He has toys, but maybe he still gets bored. Inside is a big problem because I live in a condo. I have tried so many things. He stops when I put his collar on him and just press the sound button, but it is important that he not get so wound up about barking inside. He is a mini-aussie. Do you have experience with barky dogs that you can give me ideas on what to do. I work during the day and his training rituals are exhausting.
