on the wiki page for the show the name is spelled cookita. i can’t find specifics on who was writing for the show, but it’s very likely that someone who isn’t familiar with spanish let that slide without knowing what cuquita means. looking it up myself, it took a couple searches to even get the word spelled right. i doubt the writers of this random ass disney show had the foresight to put in that much effort. unless you have some other reason why you think it’s “groomish”.

I heard that the show is based on the creator's childhood in LA. Also, apparently, some Latinos in the USA speak broken Spanish. The show, in general, looks like Disney's response to The Loud House and The Casagrandes. Of course, a show revolving around a huge family and their crazy antics is very common. What bugs me the most is the art style and the designs. Is it mandatory that every Western cartoon makes its characters as ugly as possible? Their heads are larger than their torsos! And where's the variety? Another Disney show where the hyperactive girl is the main character. Where are the boys, monsters, animals, aliens, etc.?

It's so dumb how she thought saying Spanish is a Conquistador language would suddenly justify her bad grammar. I'm not sure if she's the main character's voice actor (don't care enough to look it up), but I'm guessing she's like- a white-washed Mexican or something like that. I've met other Mexicans born and raised in the USA who despite having parents and other adults speak to them in Spanish, yet either never learn to speak it or aren't experts at it. Nothing wrong with that! It happens! It all depends where you're raised, the people around you, the time period, etc. If that was the author's original idea, she did a horrible job portraying and explaining that. But yeah, this cartoon from the intro alone sucks.

Cuquita is a cutesy version of the nickname Cuca. Which in some parts of latin america does mean pussy but in some parts it doesnt. Im from Baja California Sur, Mexico. I've know a few cuquitas in my life so to me it's a normal nickname. Cuca is a nickname for people named "Refugio" in a similar fashion to calling someone named Charles Chuck or Charlie

I get what you mean, not every country in LatAm uses cuquita as slang for vagina. However, this being a Disney show, it will see international release, and it IS common enough as a slang word to merit the change (the entire upper crust of South America uses it). Latin spanish dubs use "neutral" spanish for a reason, to avoid the use of slang that might be accidentally offensive in other hispanic countries, for example :v

It's like naming a kid's show character "Dick." Yeah it's technically a name, it's the shorthand for Richard(for some reason) but you wouldn't want kids going around shouting about how much they love Dick or have merchandise with the character and their name all over it. It's just not good optics/PR. Not everyone is gonna look at the context or even know that there is context, and just see a child character being named after a bad word. Disney has a family friendly reputation to uphold, and naming a character that is slang for genitalia in some parts of the world is not gonna help that image. That's why people are complaining.

Show looks half baked, could of used more refining, like a large cast show about Mexican cousins could of been fun, but why the 3 cheerleaders and the knockoff OwlHouse looking kid. Also make lean into a grungy style, the generic clean like look ain't doing these designs any favors. Like it could be interesting to have a show look rough, textured, grungy, but have a heart in it. What i fear it will get a group attached to kike that Loud House show did, the propulsive sewer dwelers ill call em.

I'm gonna take a wild guess here. The cheerleader with the eye thing is not a bruise but most likely an old scar from some boiling liquid that fell on her when she was running around or being all curious at the kitchen despite adults telling her to go away to the living room while they are busy making dinner. I've met people with something along those lines happen to them (though not in the eye) back in my school days although it isn't a common think I think.... or maybe I just don't know enough people.

So allow me to clarify a few things: From the intro of the show, it states that the cousins are only there for the summer. It's meant to be a coming-of-age series where the primos help Tater find her true self. Tater's full name is Tater Ramirez Humphrey, as the family isn't just a Latino one but a mixed family. The creator said growing up, she had a Mexican mom and an American white father from Tennessee (similar situation for me, my dad was of Irish/Russian descent), so the show reflects her childhood in Los Angeles. In Mexico, Cuquita or Cuca is a common name. It’s another way of saying woman who gives shelter. It’s a nice way of calling people whose complete name is for example: “Maria del Refugio” or Maria de los desamparados”. While yes, it could mean "something else", but something to keep in mind is that like how in English-speaking countries, words can have different meanings depending on where you are and American English is different from British or Australian English, the Spanish language is no exception and has different varieties/dialects too. Oye Primos is wrong, but they're Latino kids, speaking Los Angeles Spanish slang, living in an English environment...their Spanish ain't gonna be perfect. In the bilingual 1970s sitcom ¿Qué Pasa, USA?, the phrase is of course wrong and repeated in the intro like Oye Primos is in Disney's intro, but the point of ¿Qué Pasa, USA? was a Cuban family trying to fit in Anglo-American society in Miami. Before people say, "But the creator-", the creator didn't mention the conquistadors, that was Tater's voice actress. The creator simply said that Tater struggles with Spanish, which is understandable.

I completely agree with pretty much all your points, this show is clearly aimed at the mexican diaspora in the USA and should be reviewed as such, and not as a broad representation of LatAm as a whole (which is kinda dumb to do anyways because we're not a monolith, you can't lump us all together and not misrepresent everyone in the process). That being said, we have to keep in mind this is a Disney show that will see international release: cuca is not just slang for "vagina", it is a very harsh, very crass word, much more akin to "cunt" than any other "softer" synonym. You don't throw that one around so easily unless you want to come off as a really dirty-mouthed individual. I would know, I come from one of the multiple countries that use it as slang. So even if it doesn't mean much in Mexico particularly (and even then there's plenty mexicans that are aware of its use as slang who were equally mortified), they should at least take it into consideration when the standard latin dub comes out, if not change it altogether.

@@Agatos8 Naming a character Cuquita feels like the Spanish equivalent of naming a character Fanny in English. It is a legitimate name and there are people who have it (though it's old fashioned) but it's also a rude word. In the USA it's fairly benign and is a euphemism for "butt", but in the UK, it's very vulgar slang for female genitalia akin to "cunt". It's best to just avoid it, even if you're not in the UK...
