There's no doubt about it that Tesla has made a big splash in the car industry. Electric cars are all around us only around a decade later of Tesla's main efforts. Today we hop in a Tesla Model 3 Performance with a bunch of modifications from Unplugged Performance. Today we ask the question - are modified electric cars even worth the effort? Let's go for a drive and find out.

as a car guy AND tesla employee, i always try and tell people to treat EV’s and ICE cars as completely different. you can appreciate both for what they are. electric cars are a bit of a one trick pony with the acceleration but you have to experience it! it’s unlike anything else. BUT, slamming gears and hearing exhaust is also like no other experience out there. both can be appreciated.

EVs make a great daily, but I get the feeling that most of them will feel more or less the same to drive which will make them very replaceable. People will be attached to the looks and interior features of the car than they will to the actual driving experience.

Don't get why driving experience gets brought up as a negative for EVs, when 99% of the cars in the past decade pretty much takes out all feedback you get. EPSA, drive by wire, all the assists and stuff, like you don't get driving experience in an ICE car either

Not just driving experience but also modifications. Most car guys love to tinker with their cars. Besides basic weight reduction, suspension and braking, there's nothing you can do to upgrade their performance. When it comes to power upgrades for i.c.e. the sky is the limit and for battery electric there's literally nothing you can do, what you buy is what you get. I don't mind the EVs, but I think it is a mistake for manufacturers to pitch the all or nothing mentality with them. Later down the line they will just be another stepping stone in automotive history. Inevitably the answer probably lies with a balance of both internal combustion and electric, not to mention the other forms we haven't fully explored yet.

they will go out of business if they dont adjust to current market demands and its not economical to just go half in, as the price of the EV's will need to be sky high to cover the R&D and new factory lines to make them. might as well go all or nothing and make a really good compelling EV and offer a cheaper price and hope for the best.

It's called regenerative braking. No noise, that's the best part. It doesn't attract unwanted attention. And, do you want noise, or performance? Noise maker ICEs remind me of being a kid with cards in the spokes. Yes, it redefines performance. It's a new benchmark. You can whine about EVs, or you can step up to the future. They're not for everyone, but if it works for you, it'll redefine what you've come to associate with performance. It's an economy car, a performance car, a daily driver, a stealth car, and a upscale car. It's a winner. But, like any performance car, you quickly get used to it. And, it's only 200-300lbs heavier than comparable ICE performance cars.

I know someone who has "modified" their model 3 with mostly weight reduction, tire/wheel upgrades, brakes etc. And have beaten modified McLarens in their class at nationals. Shorter wheelsbase makes for better turning in Autocross-esk racing and the instant tq makes immediate acceleration out of corners + no gear shifting saves time. Absolute SLEEPER!

Same weight as the most commonly traded in car for a tesla model 3. Which would be the BMW 3 series. A base tesla 3 weighs within 60# of a base bmw 3 series. A fully loaded awd performance model 3 weighs within 100# of a fully loaded up BMW 3 series. The lotus evija weighs 3700# with 2000hp and quad motors. The base lightning ev truck weighs within 200# of a fully loaded up raptor, and about 500# more than a f-150 crew cab hybrid powerboost. Ev weights are getting much closer now. And within 2-3 year's will likely be less than a similar segment ice vehicle's weight.

Sadly seems like BEVs to mainstream audience is still very new. A Tesla is NOT the end all be of performance BEVs. BEVs can be vastly different and have vastly different character personality. The industry is just soo infant very few type of high performance BEVs production cars exist. Currently there is no Rally car, no drift weapon and no compact 2 seater currently. But these will be coming soon as these are areas BEVs can do well. The false assumption "All BEVs Feal the Same" is patently impossible. BEVs can have vastly different architectures like number of motors to axel placement then also the mass shape can be vastly different. We are at the Apple Macintosh stage of GUI computers.

No Tesla has "autonomous driving" the FSD option is more aspirational than actually usable. What is this nonsense about "fluid in my ears, fluid in my face". I have a Model 3 Performance, (I traded in a V8 BMW M3 when I got my Model 3 performance, so I have a similar point of reference to these guys), it accelerates very well, but it's only about 1 G max acceleration (whether lateral or straight line), not even close to the 7+ G of some of the jets I used to fly. Nobody is going to grey out or black out in a Tesla because the blood drains out of their eyes or brain.

I think the reason aftermarket accessories for EV's are slow in offering products is most people will not want to void their warranty. Once the car has been around long enough the aftermarket industry will grow rapidly.
@Briggsian
@Briggsian 2 жыл бұрын
It's because there are fewer parts to change, and the powertrain components can't really be upgraded the same way an ICE vehicle's can. In theory, you could rebuild the motor to produce more power, but you'd need to tweak the car's software to get the battery to deliver that power, which is pretty much impossible since you now have to crack the vehicle's software encryption. You could upgrade the battery, but that's the most expensive component in the vehicle, and the cost of developing a higher performance battery would mean that an aftermarket battery would be much more expensive than the already expensive OE batteries. Overall, the aftermarket for EVs will strictly be handling and cosmetics, unless someone is able to crack the software encryption to allow for mod support.

EVs aren't for the enthusiast in my opinion. The only advantage they have is with acceleration. While that's great that they can accelerate so quickly, it's the one & only attribute that's appealing to an enthusiast. Unless you're someone with enough money who can afford a high performance EV And another High Performance vehicle, most enthusiasts don't bother. They're incredibly expensive upfront and have limited options for modifications. EVs are a great alternative especially as a commuter vehicle, just not a performance vehicle.

That depends on how the cars are being used by the consumer. A person who keeps their car for 10 years and drives 10000 miles a year would be reducing their impact on the environment by switching to an EV. A person that leases a new car every 2-3 years and drives the same 10000 miles a year would have a worse impact on the environment if they were driving an EV. This is assuming that the ICE and EV are comparable vehicles of course.

You almost have to wait on outside sources to modify or make a different charging point that allows the engine to safely take more energy from the battery it's self. It is after all the battery that powers the engine. Of course this in turn would diminish travel distance, but short of that you can't really do much else. Unfortunately, upgrading is really tricky because all the electrics built into the car are designed to work on the particular power output from the battery which is fitted as standard. Changing the battery, you might see some electrical items fail to work properly. It's like how 12v & 24v aren't the same or other batteries, for instance. Unless you can convert said parts to operate on a different source or change those parts that are source compatible to your new source, you'll never get it to be faster short of weight reduction.

At some point, I can see people making higher performance motors and maybe batteries, though batteries would be extremely expensive. An aftermarket, high-performance battery upgrade would probably cost half as much as the entire vehicle.
