Bodhidharma was a Buddhist monk who lived during the 5th-6th century CE. He is traditionally credited as the transmitter of Ch'an (Sanskrit: Dhyāna, Japanese: Zen) to China, and regarded as its first Chinese patriarch. According to Chinese legend, he also began the physical training of the Shaolin monks that led to the creation of Shaolinquan. Little contemporary biographical information on Bodhidharma is extant, and subsequent accounts became layered with legend.The principle sources, given in various translations, vary on their account of Bodhidharma's origins.Two popular traditions exist regarding Bodhidharma's origins. An Indian tradition regards Bodhidharma to be the third son of a Tamil Pallava king from Kanchipuram, while the Japanese tradition regards Bodhidharma to be from Persia.The accounts also differ on the date of his arrival, with one early account claiming that he arrived during the Liú Sòng Dynasty (420--479) and later accounts dating his arrival to the Liáng Dynasty (502--557). Bodhidharma was primarily active in the lands of the Northern Wèi Dynasty (386--534). Modern scholarship dates him to about the early 5th century.Several stories about Bodhidharma have become popular legends, which are still being used in the Ch'an and Zen-tradition. Bodhidharma's teachings and practice centered on meditation and the Lankavatara Sutra. The Anthology of the Patriarchal Hall (952) identifies Bodhidharma as the 28th Patriarch of Buddhism in an uninterrupted line that extends all the way back to the Buddha himself.

This is to inform you I am a freelance researcher on Buddhism, concentrating on how and why Buddhism disappeared from Bihar. I realize Buddhism still exists in Bihar but special research is needed to recognize this. Here is an example. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings and deeds which Buddhists have mistaken for manifestations. Example. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain, and if one removes lust and desire, pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba? The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In Vaishali, in Beluha, the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. He felt his time had come. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. The unique thing is Brahmins aren’t allowed to pray to these Baba’s. So this is most probably another religion, the elusive Indian Buddhism. There are many more such examples.

I thought it was an honorary title, like Buddha. Meaning a Buddha who comes back to the "real" life. Not a name.. But maybe it can be both.

*The attribution of Shaolin's martial arts to Bodhidharma has been discounted by several 20th century martial arts historians, first by Tang Hao on the grounds that the Yì Jīn Jīng is a forgery.* Huiguang and Sengchou were involved with martial arts before they became two of the very first Shaolin monks, reported as *practicing martial arts before the arrival of Bodhidharma.* Records of the discovery of arms caches in the monasteries of Chang'an during government raids in AD 446 suggests that *Chinese monks practiced martial arts prior to the establishment of the Shaolin Monastery in 497.* *Monks came from the ranks of the population among whom the martial arts were widely practiced before the introduction of Buddhism.* There are indications that Huiguang, Sengchou and even Huike, Bodhidarma's immediate successor as Patriarch of Chán Buddhism, may have been military men before retiring to the monastic life. Moreover, Chinese monasteries, not unlike those of Europe, in many ways were effectively large landed estates, that is, sources of considerable regular income which required protection. In addition to that, the *Spring and Autumn Annals of Wu and Yue, the Bibliographies in the Book of the Han Dynasty(206 BC - 220 AD) and the Records of the Grand Historian all document the existence of martial arts in China before Bodhidharma.* The martial arts Shuāi Jiāo and Sun Bin Quan, to name two, *predate the establishment of the Shaolin Monastery by centuries.* References: Henning, Stanley E.
