I have owned almost every amp made, several Plexi's over the years. Ended up selling them cause they were just too loud and unmanageable.But I always preferred that Plexi tone so I bought one of these and All I can say is wow, Marshall nailed it with this. Marshall made a good move with these and the origin. Both killer sounding amps for reasonable prices compared to the big brothers
@stratolestele76112 жыл бұрын
IMO, the Marshall Origins don't belong in the same sentence as the SVs. I quickly dumped my Origin for what I knew I really wanted, a JTM45, and gladly took the hit on my wallet for 'that' Marshall tone I've had in my head for many years and many Marshalls.
@rocknroll1973 Жыл бұрын
@@stratolestele7611thing is though the jtm45 doesn't have a master volume or a switch to change the wattage output. And I couldn't use the jtm45 sadly live properly because it was so loud. Could only crank it in rehearsal. And the origin and code get pretty close and play at low volume. I haven't missed my jtm45 one bit. I am however getting the sv20h for lead stuff. Origin is great for Malcolm's cleaner tone between stiff upper lip and black ice tours.

Just a quick note, typically you plug into the upper left input, HI level treble, and jump from the bottom left, (low level treble, but when you do this it disconnects a resistor to ground so you get mostly full signal) and put jumper in top right, HI level normal. Gives you slightly brighter, most gain. Tho you can use any combination that is preferable to you, tone wise.
@sebastionhawk55657 ай бұрын
ESPECIALLY for humbuckers. ANd, for the single coils, it is best the wat he has it, for most people. The arrangements of those 2 different input schemes are "enantiomers," or, mirror images.
@donharrold13755 жыл бұрын
I’ve just got one of these with the matching cab. It’s very loud and very bright when plugged into the high treble channel. The normal channel is quite dark even with a Strat. To get an optimum sound you need to jump the high treble and the normal channel and blend them. On 20W mode it’s almost as loud as some 50W amps. Even 5W mode will give you a headache if you crank it for long periods. I’ve installed a volume pot in the effects loop to effectively add a master volume function so I can crank it at home. It sounds well, very Marshall.

Glenn Steen You won’t get it to sound exactly like a tube amp going full tilt. At the end of the day the plexi sound is about both preamp and power amp distorting. By adding the pot you are effectively reducing the input to the power amp.

I'm old school. I am 56, grew up in the 80s in middle America with the Marshall roar, mostly from the JCM800s. However coming up with Skynard, Zepplin, AC/DC, and early EVH to name only a few, I quickly left my JCM800 sit while playing my Plexi everyday. I now have this and BTW, I bought the Origin 2x12 MDF cab with the seventy 80s for a fraction of the price and loaded it with V30s. This little half stack is Amazing! I use it on stage every weekend. I figure I'm gonna beat up the cab anyway so why pay the heavy price! Love the videos! Your my go to when I'm in the market.. Thanks brother!
@stratolestele76112 жыл бұрын
We're around the same age with the same taste in music. I also had a JCM800, and also had mid-80s Marshall 4x12 I bought used in '91. Pumped at least 10 amps through it. I'll fast forward - I bought the POS (IMO) 20w Origin with matching 2x12 vertical. Unloaded both very quickly. I now have a glorious JTM45 to which I added a replica Marshall 4x12 basketweave (100% accurate construction). The cab, all by itself, no matter what I pump through it, is magnitudes of greatness over the Origin 2x12 I had. It's not so much the two additional speakers (Hellatone 25s), but it's the resonance of the cab. If you ever have some 'fun money' to spend, I would seriously consider a high quality shell. It really makes a difference.

Awesome review. Very nice sound quality, you can hear the subtle changes from knob tweaks very well. I've owned countless 100 watt heads of all flavors, and my rig now is a Bogner ATMA (18 watts), and I'm picking up this head with a 4x10 G10-35 loaded cab tomorrow. Like several others have said, it's just a fun amp to play. It's definitely a simple interface on the front panel, but I may have spent more time playing it in the shop than any other amp i've tried out in 30 years of playing. the real challenge with this amp it playing through it without jamming an ACDC riff, it's almost impossible to not do it with a big smile on your face. :). This little amp IS Rock n roll. Although this amp is 1/5 the wattage of it's big predecessors in a live mix you'd have a tough time telling them apart IMHO.

I have owned a Marshall 4212 JCM800 Split Channel Master Volume 50W Super Lead 2 x 12 combo since I bought it in 1984 (hire purchase, and I had to scrimp and save to make it finally mine). I have rocked the shit out of it ever since then, and it's still going strong, and I love it. I could get more for it than the price I bought it for, but I'm never going to sell it. I have never even had to mike this up, though I do DI it up to the desk so I can catch it through one of my wedge monitors (I'm lead singer and lead guitarist and need the separation), but I don't think I've ever had the master volume all the way up, even in big outdoor gigs (OK, not in the league of Wembley Stadium, but we've done gigs in front of a couple of thousand people). I gain the shit out of her and she still keeps rocking, night after night after night, and she's barely old enough to be my daughter. I recently had Marshall in Bletchley completely refurb her for me after all those gigs (you could did your fingernails into the sticky beer-spill layer all over the Tolex. The speaker cloth was ripped, the Marshall logo was busted , the screws were rusty, the carrying handle was near its last legs (should have had side handle, because this thing weighs a ton), busted knobs, and so on. They did the works on Marsha (what I call her), but there are still just enough visible scars on the front panel to show that she's been through the rock wars. But she looks immaculate again, and I finally have a case for her, to prevent damage when bouncing around in the back of a van (though we all go in cars now). In case you didn't catch this, I'm rather partial to this amp. But I have always wanted to try one of the legendary Plexis, but have never dreamed of being able to afford one. But this little beauty might just be the answer. It might not be truly metal, but it would make a damned good practice amp. I like the sound of it.
@chrismurray29784 жыл бұрын
Mr, never use the words Marshall , and "practise amp" in the same paragraph!I get it, where you are coming from,(not really metal etc) but you should realise is that their would not have been a genre called"heavy metal" had it not been for the uniquely subtle break up( usually outdoors and thru a 4x12[4 25watt 16ohm celestion green-backs]) at which these big old amps excelled.The break up sounds warm and full bodied, rather than the more mid-scooped harsher, more metallic ultra gain of today's metal tones. If you are outdoors, not even mic'd up, with 100 plexi thru 4x12 you don't need as much gain, and you don't need to drain all the mids so it cuts thru a distorted wall of sound. Guitarists like Clapton, in cream , Jeff Beck( with Rob Wood and Rod Stewart, and Jimmy Page with Zep all used this moderate gain but loud approach, influencing generations of others, who , being unable to fill stadiums, have to use master volumes, gain switching, or pedal drive effects to get that same sound but at more moderate volume, where they can use the band practise room, the studio, the bar gig, a load box , or if all else fails, just using gobs of extra distortion until you have to go in with the EQ scalpel and trim the fat to cut thru the mix.Essentially modern metal ends up chasing its tail like this- but then the world has changed and no-one much plays outdoors unmic'd at huge venues so maybe metal should move on from trying to approximate something which is no longer applicable to the average young persons social life.The old hippies are no better, banging on about good taste in vintage tones as if they were sitting around talking about old motorbikes. These are side road, rabbit hole distractions from the essential task of doing something which is artistically worthwhile musically- a carpenter is best when presenting a finished crafted bit of woodwork to a consumer with pride, not when sitting around discussing his tool! We all have our own reactions to gear, so what works for you, what inspires you until you forget it's there, is what you should practice, rehearse, and perform or record using.Dont make the mistake of focussing on gear by building an ideal sound from different pieces of gear as a shopping list to achieve your sound, or else when you get it all it may not work for the way you thought it would! good luck on your adventures in the field of metal( but this little Marshall was never trying to be metal, it was trying to reproduce the sound that metal was eventually built on but before it existed!)

I own the mini jubilee with the matching 2x12 Marshall cab with the vintage celestion G12 V speakers but there’s no way I can crank it to the point of death without getting crazy feedback. I’m very lucky and I own a home with a basement and I can basically have Metallica do a full show at full volume down here and not a single neighbor would know it. My issue is that I get crazy feedback and reverb that I don’t want in my recording. I bought the celestion g12 V vintage impulse response bundle from Two-Notes and I’ll be dammed if the sound isn’t super close. So I basically got to crank my amp all the way without any of the feedback! Not a single person has said a thing, especially my tonally-snobby guitar/engineer friends!

Great video, and that opening track sounds amazing ! In all honesty, that kind of tone (which you also got in the SC20H video) makes your playing shine way more that more modern/gainy/compressed amps. I got one of the first that were available through online EU retailers (SN #593), and mine sounds exactly like this (different cab though, different speakers, I use a G12M25 4x12)...love it ! Still in the honeymoon phase, but super impressed with it. And dynamics on this amp are second to none, it really gives back what you put into it. And yeah, they're FUN to play ! Btw I have found (as your video shows) that not diming the channels but having them at 3/4th sounds less squishy, and you can get the gain from using a pedal in front. Works better for me, YMMV. Interestingly, the Friedman gets in the ballpark, while being three times the price. Sure, it has more features, but if you want THAT tone, look no further, the SV20H is the right amp. Again, great video, major thumbs up.

Assuming identical speakers and an actual output of 20 watts, the 20 watters pump out only ca. 7 db less than 100 watters, i.e. „comically too loud“ vs. „still too loud for most small/inner city clubs these days“. Or „roughly half of comically too loud“, if you prefer. With a stock chinese V30, even a 1 watt amp can easily reach close to 100 dB. Good luck getting power tube saturation live in 20 watt mode and not be shown the door by irate club management 😀.

Back in the eighties I had a 1968 100watt Marshall super lead ( plexi) and when measured on the test gear was found to be putting out 180 watts(RMS) or in other words up and down but an average output of 180watts. I first bought it when I was eighteen and it was second hand and one of only three in the country(New Zealand) it was 1972 and it cost me NZ$1450... enough to buy a cheap house in those days.The only way I could afford it was to borrow $200 from my dad and get another$200 from cashing in my life insurance policy, then avoiding repossession agents for 5 years as I slowly paid it off working as a truck driver.I used to plug in and noodle(of course turning up to 7 to get a good sound and then wonder why my parents weren't amused and kept telling me to turn down. The amp was stolen from me twice and the second time I lost it for ever.The amp had a certain character that just inspired me and although it's hard to describe,I could see almost the moment when it dawned on you , Henning and when it clicked you suddenly got it - why these sounds are just so loved- like the sound of dome car engines it just has personality that can't be copied.My old beauty would be worth upwards of 12 -15 thousand New Zealand dollars today( excuse me while I shed a little tear) where was I? Oh yes thanks for featuring this amp which seems to sound a lot like my old one from what I could hear.Unfortunately the SV20H would cost me $2000 NZ dollars - still way too steep, so I guess I'll have to make do without that sound until I win the lottery!

Maybe it was mentioned in a different video, but that Synergy 2x12" cab is loaded with Celestion Vintage 30s, right? The cab intended to go with this amp (i.e., the Marshall SV212) is actually better than most 2x12" cabs I've heard so far - something that was quite surprising to me. The Celestion V-type speakers, which I haven't heard before getting the SV212, match really well with the SV20. I usually prefer Celestion Heritage speakers as they almost always deliver the best sound with a Marshall to my ears. The V-types do sound differently for sure but not worse! IMHO, that's quite impressive at that price (V-types are cheaper than most other Celestion 12" speakers). I also compared the SV20 to a Friedman Smallbox. For me, the Smallbox is essentially the bootique version of a Marshall 1987X and the SV20 sounds very close to a 1987X. Both, the 1987X and the Smallbox offered more low end but not so much so I would really miss it with the SV20. Apart from that, I was happy to learn that the SV20 could replace both of those amps in most situations. One can safely say: The SV20 is one of the best Marshalls released in a long time!

Please tell me that track is programmed drums because that will give me hope! Marshall did the smart thing and added a line out that doesn't have a shitty analog sim on it that you can't turn off (looking at you MESA), most people can afford decent IR's these days and thats what you want to use that for! I have to wonder what bright caps are in these Marshalls as that varied through the years, it sounds bloody bright to me but that could be multiple factors. I don't know why more manufacturers don't over classic style models but with PPIMV and bright switch, it would make them so much more compatible for various situations.

Essentially it's a 50 watt 1987X with a 20 watt OT and a one third power mod. A used 1987x with a blown output transformer is perfect for this. The reissues are notorious for bad transformers both power and the OT and can be had relatively cheap used if you look around. Replace the OT with a 20 watt OT add the 1/3 power mod simple to do and rock on. Personally I see no point to a line level for DI at 5 watts but its a super easy mod if you just can't live without one. Just fire it up and you'll get those EL34's singing at a manageable level and get great tone. You could probably rebuild a used 1987x for 600.00 /700.00 and essentially have the same amp. I built one 10 yrs ago used a ptp board with mustard caps instead, it's the perfect studio amp. This is a great idea but a few decades too late.

I predict that next Year the JVM20 Studio comes out haha. Nice Vid Henning keep it up that good work . But it would be nice to hear the Les Paul in the top bright channel with jumping over to the Normal channel like you have.

Friedman are a bit more bassy by nature not only because it's 50w vs 20. But this little Marshall is cool and very close to the Friedman.

Use an attenuator. On the cheaper but good side use a Torpedo Captor X. Never dump a great valve amp saying it’s too loud for home use. 😢
