Marshall Studio Vintage 20 Head Review (A SMALL PLEXI)
Marhsall have released a new line of amps. They have the Studio Classic (which is a smaller version of the JCM 800), and the Studio Vintage which is a smaller version of the famous Marshall 1959 SLP 100 watt head. The Studio Vintage is a 20 watt all valve (or tube if you're American) head, and it's plenty loud. The thing is it can also get pretty quiet. So in short it's a new, small, compact, and slightly more affordable Plexi.
In this video I check it out, and also see if it can do an Yngwie sound. I hope you enjoy the video.

The gear I most often use.
A Stratocaster of some kind, either an Yngwie Malmsteen Strat, or a custom Strat with a scalloped fretboard. For 7 string stuff I mostly use an Ibanez Universe.
A Marshall 1987x into a Marshall cab.
A Fender Yngwie Malmsteen overdrive, plus a Boss NS-2 noise gate, or a Strymon Sunset.
A Morley Bad Horsie 2 wah, and a delay.
An AKG C-414 mic for the guitar.
For acoustic stuff I use a Taylor 710 short scale thingy.

I love the way the picking sound comes through with such definition and the fat mids. That’s the characteristic of a real plexi circuit; it doesn’t distort the sound but just amplifies it. All the clarity comes through. Real plexi sound. Probably better to buy an 87xl when you’re spending money at this level but it’s still a cool amp.

That SV 20 is just the real go and if i can afford it I just might get one. It sounds great and I know that this is stupid but just looking at that amp makes me want it. My review of this review. First off this is a great review demoing how he uses his plexi amps to get his tones which are true to the Malmstein lovers out there.Now for the rest, he did not push it so we could hear the over driven classic Marshall plexi crunch, the demo without his overdrive pedal sounded like your typical low watt clean combo tones of most any tube amp maxed gain setting, and yea single coiled so it stayed bright and not too flabby. I need to hear it in 5 watt mode without a volume master in the effects loop with some classic PAF humbuckers to hear if it delivers the goods. I'm guessing it has micro phonic issues played like that and he avoided that setup all together. So yea the Fender Malmstien overdrive pedal sounds pretty good, more modern tone than the older DOD Malmstien overdrive.This guy has plexis but can't play them loud enough to get the goods! What Marshall should have done is add a PPI master volume like the vintage modern head has in the back which was the big mod to get the amp loudness crunch at lower volumes without using a power brake, , even at 5 watts probably on the loud side for bedroom volumes? But for people dreaming about Plexi Marshall tones , nothing delivers better than a mini Marshall Plexi amp . Seeing is believing! Get it ? going to,check out some other reviews for the real cranked plexi test. Even Malmstein uses his overdrive to build upon the amps cranked dirty tones, but his pedal has lotsa gain so you don't need to crank the amp for the gain ,just the tone and feel , Also there shouldn't be any hiss using the amp straight in bypassing your overdrive even when it is cranked on full. or was that with the overdrive engaged ?
@MrPolevaulter
@MrPolevaulter 5 жыл бұрын
Using a Plexi on full, without an overdrive, there's a ton of noise. Even on lower settings there will be some. Having stood next to Yngwie in Miami, while he played, looking at his setup, he had the Fender Yngwie OD set on full blast, so he's basically just running everything on full. I do that too when I record. The Studio Vintage won't be quiet enough for a bedroom, even at 5 watts. It was quite loud still.
@HANDBALLDIEHARD
@HANDBALLDIEHARD 5 жыл бұрын
@@MrPolevaulter i thunk he uses a noise gate? i have seen a older video where he describes his gear, pedals, he use to use old DOD overdrives , before his signature ones, in the video he had 2 of them in series ! I guess the 2nd one for a lead boost? Yea that's noisy! How noisy a plexi is depends on whats plugged into it and the preamp tubes too,, Its basically like a master volume amp but masters always set to 10. That noise is Volume noise since its so loud more than gain noise like pedals get. May have hum noise too. I install the dual pot Post Phase inverter master and a pre phase master volume in my older marshalls, metal faces not plexis but similar. When you crank a plexi its overdriving the phase inverter stage 3rd 12ax7 that gives the crunch, output tubes just follow the phase inverters signal. so that's how a PPI master works, you get the overdrive of the amp without the high volumes. i never had an unmolested old marshall so modding them is no big deal. We are both big fans of Yngwie, i saw him close up at some small bars in Long Island. What do you think about his singing too? Lol Keep rocking the neoclassical Shred , your good !

Elmo, you are getting some DELICIOUS tones there! I especially like the way this amp sounds with a Stratocaster (my favorite guitar). And with the Fender "Yngwie Malmsteen" signature overdrive pedal... (drool, drool, drool) This blend of components is tasty AF. I like how both Marshall amplifiers and Fender Stratocaster guitars retain clarity and definition even when driven really hard. BTW: thank you for that very inexpensive "additional volume control in the effects loop" tip. I shall have to try that on my newly acquired DSL40CR, perhaps!

My band lately has been playing breweries, so volume is an issue. When the drummer has his smaller Jazz Kit, the Singer/Guitarist can play with a 12 watt Fender Princeton. 20 Watts is perfect for most gigs we do. I play bass in the band, but I am also a guitarist. Also with guitarists using 20 watt amps or less, I can bring my smaller 150watt bass combo amp, verses the bigger stuff. Lower stage volume makes the people singing happy.

Looking at the SV primarily for guitar, but I could also run my tube bass preamp into the effect return (bypassing the onboard preamp). Then run the amp out into a bass cab resulting in a modest volume all tube bass rig for practice and low level gigs. Great review Elmo! Did you test out the d eye out and see how it compares to a real speaker if there emulator mimic the Marshall cabinet? By the way aside from the technical genius in which you play you have really captured the fire and spirit of Yngwie malmsteen heart ! Thanks so much

Hi Elmo, I've enjoyed your review as usually very much. I was already an owner of a Silver Jubilee, now I bought the one that you reviewed. What I didn't see is the fact that the presence knob is noisy. This knob is making noise when changing position, not during playing. If I look at the internet, I see a lot of people having the same problem. Is this a malfunction, or is this in the electrical design and on all of them? THX

I'm not sure but i think you don't get the "real" tone out of the amp with a voume box in the loop, because the power tubes are not pushed then.
@dansmith709
@dansmith709 4 жыл бұрын
I've tried it both with the volume box in the FX loop and also with the amp blasting into a Fryette powerstation 2 (to attenuate volume after the power amp). It's actually not really all that different, which really surprised me.
@MrWsaenot
@MrWsaenot 4 жыл бұрын
I do think that much of the "plexi tone" is also obtained by hitting very hard on the speakers. Which you can't really do unless you play fairly loud.
@cheesefrogsnail
@cheesefrogsnail 4 жыл бұрын
I can answer now as i have this amp for a month or so, at appartment level with a volume box in the loop you don't get the real thing (but at least you can play), however if you play louder it is Ok making the 5W mode useless then.

Hey older video I know, but he mentions putting a volume knob in the effects loop for home volumes, but my understanding is that will take all the juice from the front of the power amp and starve that wonderful distortion. Wouldn’t it be better for a plex I to put an attenuator after the amp and before the speaker? Serious question as I’m still learning about this stuff

Why most of the amp bloggers they are not considering the cabinet speaker (max watts) they are using for every head amp they are introducing in their blog. FYI amp head + cabinet proper match up is very important to us, so we know exactly the correct type of cabinet speaker max wattage for every amp head model.

Elmo Karjalainen it’s true! But I’m thinking of this or the JCM 800. If I get the JCM I could just boost it and call it good but a Plexi really is a whole different beast. Anyways keep up the good work!

Elmo Karjalainen could you possibly review the Plexi for drop tuned stuff? I can’t find anybody out there with a review of such things. Reason I’m looking at a Plexi is to be able to get a sound that really isn’t as common in “modern” music anymore. In a world full of Mesa and Peavey it’s nice to see a Marshall!

I actually shopped and tested one of these, they do an 800 and a silver anniversary version too, and in the end, I just bought a used 100 watt Plexi reissue for about the same price. Great amps though, but to me it was just go-with-the-real-deal and call it a day.
