23:13. You lose no time transforming in TP compared to MM. It's the same as Majora's Mask actually. Say you have mask on C down, or Z if playing Gamecube. Press Z, cutscene starts, press A to skip. Twilight Princess, press Z to talk, press A to change. Same thing. It's actually faster if you account for having to open the menu in MM if you want a mask you haven't yet equipped.

Man, I like Twilight Princess... But you do bring up a lot of good points about it. Illia is definitely the most awkward Love Interest to Link because well, Look at her she looks 12! Never been a fan of her character seeing how she Scholded Link for finding a scratch on Epona for jumping fences even though the game set me up to doing it. Malo Mart is still pretty goofy and was quite out of left field when I first entered it, It was weird and I'm all for it!

What I appreciate the most about Twilight Princess is the fact that’s it’s a very long game that focuses heavily on story. The ending is very emotional and cinematic. The soundtrack is beautiful. The combat is amazing and the items and bosses are also unique. Some of the things that I didn’t like were the fact that I would go out of my way to find a secret chest which only has rupees in it. The overworld is pretty barren and empty. Some of the character designs are extremely goofy. The wolf segments can be boring and tedious at times. Etc etc… Midna is by far the greatest character in the entire series.

Ganon showing up with the fused shadow off of midnas head filled me with so much anger the first time I saw it, like she was straight up a chill character with endearing traits and to see that pompous ass roll up to the fight with it my man really has no respect for anyone other than himself

@@caseymcdonald9714 That’s a good point. Even though he only shows up at the end he still manages to make things personal with Link which makes it all but more satisfying to defeat him in the end. I like how you have 4 different phases and then Zant comes out of nowhere and snaps Ganondorf’s neck while he dies standing. And then Midna returning to her normal self and breaking the mirror at the end 😢

never get the part of “heavily story focused” on tp because i always feels that most of the things on it are barely explored. we never see other twili characters that can tell us more about that people, the opression that zant mentions is never properly treated. the corruption of the twilight and the idea that light and darkness need each other also never really enter the storyline it feels like is just a beautiful phrase that don’t tell much of the story. it would be so cool if we seen a character arc for link where he relates with this, but no he barely has one after some point in the game. so much of it like the resistance (except for telma) is just used as a way to advance the gameplay instead of actually being explored and part of the story. the adventure itself feels like never really impact that world. it’s just a bad week in their lifes, completely diferent from other zeldas where everything changes from the beggining to the end. after so much being left without a proper exploration coudn’t even feel for midna farewell scene

@@pontozero6740 TP isn't really "heavily story focused", that's the issue. It is the biggest case of "style over substance" in the entire franchise. It goes for a gritty, realistic style, yet NOTHING in this game has any consequence. I likes to introduce unique and interesting items, only to make them the most useless items of the entire franchise. It likes to introduce badass sword moves, yet doesn't bother to design proper combat to actually integrate them in a way that adds depth. It likes to shove tons of cutscenes down your throat, but it barely even tells a good story. I honestly don't even know why people glaze Midna so much. To me it seems like people still had Navi on their mind and how much of a bland and annoying character she was and just appreciated that Midna actually had a personality. But generally speaking, her arc ends too quickly and after getting saved by Zelda she just loses her sass almost entirely to become a more righteous character...which is pretty boring. I think she's a worse companion than Ezlo or Tatl and I don't think she belongs anywhere near the top of the best characters in this franchise. She just doesn't compare to characters like Groose or BotW's Zelda.

You have to understand the context of when the Gamecube was announced. The Zelda game that was showcased had much more to do with the OoT artstyle than WW and featured a sword duel between Link and Ganondorf. It felt like a new sequel to OoT, so saying there was a lot of hype is a major understatement. That was followed by years of silence. Then, once they finally showcased new Zelda footage, it was... what would become WW. At the time, it clearly didn't deliver for fans, because it was not what they were led to expect, so the game received hate. This is likely why TP was made, imo, so that the need for an OoT looking game was met. Of course, today, that hate for WW is long gone and we finally saw it for what it actually was: a hecking good Zelda game.
@tay-lore

I think it mostly caught people off guard. It may not have been what some people expected or wanted, but in a vacuum I don't think many would have outright disliked it. And today I don't think anyone would deny that it has aged the best out of the 3D titles.
@XanderVJ
@XanderVJ 22 күн бұрын
@@dontgetlost4078 That is pretty inaccurate. You are talking about the infamous SpaceWorld 2000 demo, but contrary to what some people believe, that was not the main reason why people hated TWW's artstyle so much. It added fuel to the fire, sure, but if that demo had never existed, the backlash would have happened anyway. That's because what truly set the expectations were OOT and MM, but even saying that is omitting most of the context of the time. The thing is Nintendo was coming out of Console Generation 5 (PS1 and N64) having lost the dominance of the video game market to Sony, and one of the main reasons was because the latter managed to change the main demographic of consumers dramatically. In the 80s and first half of the 90s, the main demographic of gamers were children in between 8 and 14 years old. But Sony managed to up that average to people in between 14 and 24 years old with the first PlayStation. Not only because the people who grew up with Nintendo consoles had grown up, but because Sony managed to reach new consumers in that age bracket that had never played games before. And the last thing people in that age bracket wanted to play in the early 2000s was a Zelda game with an art style reminiscent of "Dora The Explorer". Yes, that including the first generation of Nintendo fans, who had to endure quite a harsh time sharing their hobby with their peers during the N64 era, since, with very few exceptions like "Golden Eye" and the Zelda games, was seen as a console for small children. The reality is that TWW's art style was just tone deaf when it first came out. Also, what the hell do you mean by "That was followed by years of silence". The SpaceWorld 2000 demo and the TWW reveal trailer were exactly ONE year apart!

The story criticism here is actually pretty awful not going to lie. Like the Illia scene is entirely about how power corrupts people, which is one of the major narative themes of TP. Thats why Link is shown killing Ilia in that scene, its to show how power corrupts people. As for the fused shadows not mattering because Zant is getting power from Ganondorf, we arent supposed to know Ganon has any part in the games story at all, hes not revealed in any way until after Arboters Grounds. The reason Midna tasks Link to gather the fused shadows is so Link can match the power of Zant, but shes unaware that Zants power comes from Ganondorf and thus the triforce of power. The reason we are supposed to care about twilight magic is because its a magic type that is incredibly powerful that anyone can theoretically use even if its less powerful than the triforce. The whole reason the Interlopers discovered it the first place was to use it to like the "pointless" Ilia cutscene said, "secure dominion over the Sacred Realm", which just so happens to be where the triforce is. The thing with Zelda sacrificing herself to save Midna isnt entirely explained, but does have an explanation if you look at lore outside of TP. Zelda is very likely giving Midna her life force or at least some of it, which is another concept in the Zelda franchise that osnt explored all that often. Its stated in PH the Tetra (Zelda) has incredibly powerful life force, which makes sense. If you look at Zelda during the cutscene right before the final boss starts. Shes just kind of lifeless too. Shes completely still. Zelda vanishing was likely just Ganondord kidnapping her like he did in Ocarina of Time. Which explains why she appears in throne room on the first place. Theres more problems with this critique in particular I could point out, including more counterpoints to the problems Ive addressed above but this comment is alrwdy way too long.

"the Illia scene is entirely about how power corrupts people" I get that part. My main complaint was the scene was shock value and a pretentious way to portray that theme. "The thing with Zelda sacrificing herself to save Midna isnt entirely explained, but does have an explanation if you look at lore outside of TP. " I shouldn't have to do that though. Witcher 3 can be understood without playing the first two games or reading the books. I would prefer it if Twilight Princess was the same. Also, Phantom Hourglass released a year after Twilight Princess. If there is lore that explains the scene, it certainly should not be in a game nobody could have played at the time TP released. When you say "its likely that...", it sounds like you're just using plot beats from other games to create your own headcanon that explains the story, but that shouldn't be necessary either.
@buddermomo2864
@buddermomo2864 23 күн бұрын
@YetAnotherUrbanist I understand that maybe you don't prefer needing lore from another part of a franchise to understand the story in its entirety, but it's just kind of something Zelda tends to do a lot. Like recently in Echoes of Wisdom, the triforce appears at the very end and splits into three pieces when Echo Zelda touches it. The way the pieces are distributed is exactly how one would expect, power to Echo Zelda (Null), Wisdom to Zelda, and courage to Link. However the reason this happens is never explained in game, we only know because of lore from previous titles. Even if life force is only properly in PH which came after TP, I don't think it's entirely fair to dismiss it entirely. Sure it's my own theory, but it's a theory that holds quite a bit of weight considering the evidence. Just because it's not your preferred way of storytelling, doesn't make it bad. I'm also not sure how the Ilia cutscene is pretentious? Sure it uses shock value, but shock value isn't inherently bad either. In this case the shock value is used to warn people about how easy it is for anyone to be consumed by power regardless of intentions. I certainly wouldn't call it pretentious. You don't have to like the style of TP and it's story, but it doesn't mean it is inherently more flawed than styles you do like.

It was pretentious. To me, that scene was a Hail Mary attempt to get people to see TP as the mature Zelda game they wanted Wind Waker to be. It's not a terrible message, but in universe, Link never considers doing something bad with the power he obtains. He doesn't need that warning, it's not important for his character, so the only reason it is delivered is to have a shocking scene.
@joshz2491

@@YetAnotherUrbanistthe point about Link never being tempted by power is an excellent one. That scene in TP feels like its trying to be Lord of the rings but forgot that Link is never even slightly questionable in his morality. Dark link does exist but that isn't so much an evil version of Link as it his literal shadow, to gauge his skills in combat. In OOT your shadow even disappears once you cross to the other end of the chamber and is waiting for you when you in the middle when you turn around again.

Twilight Princess may have a lot of design flaws but it still offers a lot to enjoy. I feel like every Zelda game has some obvious problems with its design. There wasn't anything wrong with Wind Waker's visual style but I also really like the amount of visual detail Twilight Princess has compared to Wind Waker. I have mostly given up trying to make sense of any story in the Zelda series but maybe Twilight Princess's plot is especially confusing. How much anyone enjoys a game is often not dictated by how close a game's design is to perfect, though, sometimes people just want something that is interesting even if flawed. It is still fair to criticise flaws in game design but sometimes it is the choice to focus on flaws that causes more detriment to the enjoyment of the experience than any of the actual flaws. I have just noticed that my own experience with intentionally analysing games and looking out for good and bad design has changed my experience with games and what I can write into words about a game doesn't always reflect the reality of what I feel when actually playing a game casually. It starts to become a philosophical problem because generally the whole purpose of games is entertainment, to just be fun, yet a badly designed game is still badly designed even if you can find it entertaining... Is it not? What exactly does it mean for a game to badly designed? Eh, maybe I am just overthinking it. I just think a lot of the flaws of Twilight Princess don't necessarily impact an average player's experience with the game all that much and that other games in the series seem to have more actual conflict between design and gameplay.
@Sky-dn9qy
@Sky-dn9qy 3 күн бұрын
Whether you're overthinking or not, I think this was well said. Love this comment lol. I too have experienced games that I found pleasure in whilst playing casually; a somewhat recent example of this was actually Pokemon Shield, which saw a lot of controversy and criticism that I could definitely agree with and eventually started shaping the way I perceived that game after I indulged in them. I think this is an important point to consider, though I'll admit I have no idea if this is a problem this particular creator experiences with Twilight Princess, because in their own words they've replayed it several times with the intention of looking upon it more favorably until their most recent playthrough with the intention of more scrutiny. Honestly, I'm not so dissimilar from this creator in terms of wanting to understand the depths and nuances of my opinion of things, and trying to peer closer to rationalize and specify them. I like to give my expressions the flavor that comes from understanding the nuances of my own perspective, and in that way don't necessarily see what he's doing with this video as a bad or inherently negative thing. And I say this as someone who has always cherished Twilight Princess, and still considers not only one of his favorite games, but favorite Zelda game.

If I were to show someone interested in writing good stories, something like Majora's Mask, I think they would find a lot of merit in how the game manages to convey its themes and develop well-realized characters that force us to think, especially considering it was developed in such a short amount of time. Twilight Princess, on the other hand would fall short in these areas despite being more ambitious/epic and longer.

I wouldn't trade Gannondorf's scene with the 7 Sages for anything honestly. It's an amazing scene, and the 7 sages have such awesome and ethereal designs! So, keeping this, what if Zant had murked Gannondorf and absorbed the Triforce of Power? Not only would this make him the big bad of the game, but it would also make the lore a little bit scarier knowing that anyone besides the chosen can still grab the Triforce This would also fit perfectly if Zelda had given her Triforce of Wisdom to Midna as well

I love the game(I consider it the other side of WW's coin in a good way), but the worst part is unironically that Zelda didn't actually sacrifice herself and just shows up at the end. The very clear idea being conveyed is that Zelda gives her life to merge her own essence into Midna's to make her compatible with both the light world and the light Zant forcefully infused into her earlier. What they went with in the end just doesn't make any sense(It is like they plain forgot what they did hours prior) and it is just for the most weaksauce "hijacked by ganon"(except literally) moment ever. ...Which is actually kinda ironic because the entire last act of the game is a hijack by ganon because we already saved hyrule by beating Zant and then just kinda awkwardly storm the castle taken hostage by pee paw ganonstadt afterwards, but I guess at least the final battle was built up to throughout the plot unlike Zelda's reappearance.

So a weird theory I have. I think twilight princess and windwaker have similar kind of timelines together yes, but what's not kind of mentioned in a way in twilight princess you can actually visit the sky. And that being. The sky people. Are originated from the very sky people hinting of the birds or rito. Close to that diverting to what people think the theory of how rito and the zora are kind of related in some benefit way. But technically speaking the rito might be the sky people but in which there are some earlier Zelda games where I believe if I'm correct in minish cap/correct me if I'm wrong/ or oracle of seasons mentions traveling in the sky. Which also technically in the twilight realm it depicts also to the tears of the kingdom series where there is an underworld ish world entirely underneath all of Hyrule sounding similar to windwaker how Hyrule was buried literally underneath the sea floor. So in a way the ancient kingdoms connecting directly from the sky. Goes back to skyward sword where they lived in the sky and the temple of time itself was in a way on ground. Groose being the connection of gerudo with his long flocky red hair. Also the sky people in twilight princess are shaped formed differently and if you translate their type of language it's kind of similar to the type of language written within the skyward sword series written on some parts. So in a way it's an interesting theory that all of those are in the timelines. So if there was a way in which. Midna is technically showing up in Hyrule warriors she follows within traveling literally in time with link to be able to help with attainable knowledge and I guess in a way midna is the hylian version of Zelda. Two of them correlate to where in also the link between worlds kinda tells of the same thing which is like a link to the past sort of which there's two Zelda's. But then with the form of the beast of the ancient hero of time. There's technically a goddess of time theory. I mean princess Zelda basically is the goddess hylia reborn which goes on in newer Zelda games and it seems with the royal lineage who actually have created the zonai and original kingdom? Well it all falls back in place to where people contemplate everything mixed together in all those theories the first start is definitely in skyward sword. But technically speaking. If link in ocarina of time literally goes through time with the master sword. There's always a sacred realm. And sages are always mentioned sure but in some Zelda games the goddesses and the triforce are never really mentioned meaning in ahem...links awakening and whatnot. Those simple games are funny but in a way. Yes. Arguably twilight princess is like a real life version of Zelda in a way the most realistic form of any Zelda game we have possibly seen in any series but if it was that simple there's always 3ds games or unreal engine and lots of mods to theorize but every single way if twilight princess wasn't so interesting the only thing that bugs me is we never heard of any continued series of link of his actual heritage lineage or anything I mean not even princess Zelda but in a way the two have always been theorized to be lovers. But if you see comics or anything else. It always mentions he's older than most times. Link had to travel and grow up just to be tired of defeating evil over and over so in twilight princess link never really dies yes but in wolf link form it's not much you can do with abilities but you can talk to other animals. Even. Ahem...epona. there's always a backstory and whatnot to small amounts of each game but it doesn't actually explain how twilight princess really falls into place but. It is by far pretty realistic so that's a plus of my childhood I thought was incredibly unique. ❤ But also. Who doesn't love a good long story line? Or quests that follow in the game?

The only thing I would object to in your video is the ending it's great and I think you forgot that Midna was cursed in defeating Ganondorf the curse was lifted thus she could exist in the light world without grave injury. I will admit that the game does not outright say this but I think there is enough implication that this is ultimately what happened.

Great video, and love that you are putting your opinion out there as it is fascinating hearing people's various views on the game. But I am disappointed that the title is a little misleading, as I cannot quite see this as an honest review and more-so an opinion piece on Twilight Princess. Of course, many reviews nowadays are mostly opinion-pieces, and it is difficult writing a review without weaving in an opinion. But the bulk of the video sounded more like you wanted to play a different game other than Twilight Princess, hence it felt very dishonest of a review. Like if I picked up Sonic, and expected it to be a platformer akin to Mario - it would be unfair to compare the two with one another as they play so differently. That is not to say that you did not have good points, like the slingshot item being neglected for the bulk of the game when it could have been used to solve another puzzle. But then at a different point of the video I can't help but to raise an eyebrow when you say there should have been more horseback fighting segments, or your disappointment that there is no significant character arc for the other children in the game - as you are then no longer looking to play Twilight Princess I believe but then want a story that involves large character arcs for multiple background characters or alternatively a game that is based around horseback combat. Which is cool that you seek those games and could perhaps ask for recommendations, but then you are not looking to play Twilight Princess. I hope I am articulating my perspective on this video, as it is an amazing opinion piece from a person that is so different from myself, and I love hearing you out. But I cannot help but to feel a little bugged that it is called a review in the title, as it has good points for a review, but then those points quickly mixed up with other opinion on what you wished to have played instead of Twilight Princess.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is always a weird one in my eyes, mainly for both the story's more darker tone and the more realistic character designs, prier to this, the only two The Legend of Zelda games that I played were The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and at that point I'm more use to the more cutis art-style and more comical moments of the story(before anyone ask, yes, I know that The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask also has a more darker story, but it was nothing then what The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess did). But when I look at The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, I just can't help but feel so off about it. I have been interested in replaying this game again, but now's not the time.

Majoras Mask is far darker and Twillight Princess doesnt look realistic put link or other characters from this Game in god of war 1 ps2 for example they would look off and cartoony. Its the lighting and the brown filter that made the game look "realistic"not really the graphics it still has an semi anime artstyle.

@@marvinourokadij4179 I mean the art-style for Twilight Princess looks more out-of-place, and as for the later, at least in Majoras' Mask, you donlt have anyone getting shot at by an arrow or impaled in the chest by a sword like in Twilight Princess.

@@augustbornone Strictly speaking, in terms of cutscenes, MM is less brutal than Twilight Princess explains the games age rating, but it is far more mature in its themes and storytelling.Additionally, it’s a bit odd that Nintendo opted for a semi-anime, cartoony art style in Twilight Princess, especially considering that fans at the time were asking for something more realistic. One question would you have preferred if Nintendo had gone for a truly realistic art style God of War on the PS2?

Great video, while I do enjoy twilight princess despite its mediocrity its always great to hear the perspectives of people who didn't enjoy it. I definitely agree that is a blemish in the Zelda franchise as a product of its time. I think I'll be looking upon BOTW and TOTK the same was as Twilight Princess, while enjoyable at the time they are an example of the Zelda team taking criticism and doing all the wrong things with it. Nintendo and the Zelda team took the criticism and gave the people what they "wanted" without really questioning what they could do the circumvent criticisms while not overcorrecting the issues at hand. History is doomed to repeat itself, and I really wish the team would just make what they wanted to make instead of what the "fans" want.

Ezlo, Tatl and Spirit Zelda are way better. Tatl in particular was a better sass queen than Midna, simply because she didn't do a complete 180 and remained sassy throughout the entire game. Midna became a really boring "we have to save everyone" character after Lakebed.

Just finished Twilight Princess for the first time yesterday and struggled with how bad i felt about it. Had to do a search and see if anyone else felt the same to help me explain why. The comparisons to other games in the series give so much context to the expectation let down. TP was the least fun to play (worse than Skyword Sword lol). I hated the horse mechanics, the game was nothing but dungeons, and the plot just seemed to drag on and you got a sense that your work had little value. The Ganondorf battle was solid, the diversity of novelty in gameplay was great, and the puzzles were good... but it was ALOT of work and little play. When i finished it i felt exhausted and frustrated. The opposite of Wind Waker

I feel a kinship with you because this is my least favorite traditional game in the series. The characters are good the story starts out good but absolutely tanks in the second half when Ganondorf is revealed to be the villain, most of the time this wouldn't be an issue but Zant starts out so threatening that the complete 180 of his personality after you confront him is awful. The gameplay is not coherent from beginning to end and that is my biggest problem with it. Even BOTW and TOTK understand this vital importance which is why they are the most successful games in the series in terms of sales. So yeah TP is just a lot of wasted potential and shallow game design

I remember getting it day 1 on the Wii and being disappointed by it compared to how good OOT and MM and WW were. I played it on Gamecube as well a month after finishing the Wii version. I've not replayed it since 2006 so my opinion on it may change if I was to replay it now.

@@phillipanselmo8540 I was saying skyward sword retconned the lore because they created hylia and demise and say zelda and Ganondorf are their physical incarnations. In the games before skyward sword, Hylia was just another name for hyrule, not a goddess. Also the gods are said to be the reason for Ganondorf trying to take over hyrule because it's fate but skyward sword changed it to be caused by a curse by demise. There are many other things too.

Counterpoint, Wind Waker poisoned the Legend of Zelda, so they now know they can get away with horrible art styles like Echoes of Wisdom. Twilight Princess is the style everyone wanted except for Nintendo itself, because it was too hard to maintain. You have to pay artists and stuff. Low effort, simplistic stuff is much easier, besides Shiggy hates story and pretty graphics, so why bother?

@@lpfan4491 That's an ad hominem attack. In fact, as soon as you said something stupid, I was gonna ask how it was different than the classic "You can't trust anyone's opinion who has an anime avatar" argument, but you've already made that comparison for me. Well... sort of. You seem to have misunderstood the concept on a fundamental level. Maybe it was a complete fluke, and you can't understand that Mario and Zelda are two different series. So in your analogy, it's like someone with an anime avatar saying that _Star Wars_ should stay a live action film, and not an anime. Then you incorrectly calling them a hypocrite.
