Lucky you, Blanche, to have such a faithful stump in your own yard! I used to have an elm stump in the woods out back, which gave me Pleurotus pulmonarius every autumn. Unfortunately, it eventually disintegrated (proof the mushroom was doing its job), and I haven't found it anywhere else. We do find the occasional P. ostreatus in the wild in the region, but we generally have to settle for the cultivated varieties when we're hungry. I like to use the powdered mushroom trick for small varieties, like the Laccarias and I. gibba, which often don't show up in great enough quantities to make a meal, so get dried at once.

It seems my stump is disintegrating as well--it's supplied me for many good years--bark has started to fall off and many exposed interior spots. But who knows? maybe it will come through when the next heavy rain arrives...

@@thederb720 I hope it still has a few years left in it; time to maybe find another producer - or perhaps stealthily inoculate one? I thought of you at our mushroom Monday last night - one of the members brought some nice fresh Clitocybe odora, and I snagged them to dry - one of my very favorites to add a nice 'tarragon' note to my mushroom powder mix.
