I think that most people have knee jerk reactions to over saturated words, like autotune, and cosmetic surgery. Lol. Yes, the falsetto “cry” has some autotune applied on production. Yes, of course Orville can sing this without autotune, and with perfect pitch or relative pitch. Some of the comments are ridiculous. I actually like the autotune, because it gives a modern vibe. Anyway, this guy has one of the greatest voices, and is one of my new favorite voices. Btw, his boyfriend is supposedly Diplo.

@@GenerallyNerdy I’m Gen x. Singer too. I just think that in today’s world, and also maybe younger millenials and Gen z people kind of depersonalize and consider singers and musicians as mere entertaining machines, like watching tv. It’s not about understanding or caring about learning about singing or music anymore as much as being a keyboard warrior and saying whatever they want because they can.

I think he uses it to enhance certain sections, to get a specific sound. Hearing him live, he really doesn't need any help with that insane voice. I get the feeling it is almost a style choice for those very limited and specific notes.

I respectfully disagree on the autotune - ive seen him live - he can go there...

I know he can hit those notes. he has an AMAZING voice. But the way his voice moves between notes is unnatural on this recording. That's why i think its auto tune

It would not have occurred to me to use the term 'Twin Peaks' to describe Orville Peck, but now I literally can't think of any other way to describe him.

I don't think that it was pitch corrected. Yes, I know the difference. As a singer, I can repeat that. Orville Peck is just amazing.

I just saw him live (yes i agree he is TOTALLY amazing) and it sounds different live than on the recording, which makes me think it was a style choice for the recording. In the video i said pitch corrected, but I meant to say auto-tuned. Pitch correction implies that I don't think he hit the right note. I just think for some reason he and/or the producer of the song wanted that unnatural jump between notes.

In the grand scheme of things - a moment pitch-corrected in this song… I care not one iota. The song is fantastic! And there are so many worse offenders. Great reaction!👍

Right. You can watch some live shows from Peck, and he and his band knock it out of the park. Real talent, and not manufactured Nashville product.

@@GenerallyNerdy It's because people who like watching reaction videos are only there for affirmation. They only want glowing reviews and anything less is seen as offensive. The honesty is appreciated, though! I personally couldn't tell that his voice was altered and it seems like it would be possible for him to do (I sing myself). But, based on your experience, your ears are definitely sharper than mine for things like this.

that final "Cry" is proof that the others didn't need the pitch correction, unless it was a style choice.

It doesn't sound pitch corrected to my ear, but I will concede that it may be pitch corrected as you claim. You argue the reason it must be pitch corrected is that you have never heard any singer do what Orville seems to do, without pitch correction. But I would like you to consider the possibility that Orville is in fact doing something with his natural voice that you have never heard before in any other singer.
@GenerallyNerdy

No my argument is that it sounds inhuman. I recognize that it is POSSIBLE he isn't being pitch corrected. I just think the likelihood is slim.

This was the first song I heard of his. At first listen, I got The Mavericks as well. But then I got some Elvis, some Roy Orbison, some Righteous Brothers, some Glenn Campbell and even some Mac Davis and B.J. Thomas. He’s definitely going for that wall of sound thing it works beautifully. Cheers!

So...Peck now is getting the Big Nashville routine. Way slick on this track and some others compared to earlier work. Guess that is "progress" or ladder climbing, and I don't begrudge that. What I find interesting is the whole "gay Canadian backed by punk band" sounds so much more genuine Country than the current tractor/pickup/porch swing/sweet tea BS schlock the rest of Nashville churns out.

I am amazed by the majority of the comments here. How can you not hear that the vocals are heavily auto-tuned throughout the song, not only on the "cry"? I think it's a shame because I love Orville Peck's voice, and the song is fantastic. I just don't dig the auto-tune at all. Here's a live rendition where his voice is free to be slightly flat or sharp, like a human voice. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nn7IYmx5pct7ldksi=pwop7GDAuPqTh5YI

why would someone who cares about music production care about pitch correction? a song is an art piece, making it the best it can be is the point.

Because it is unnecessary. Orville has a great voice and totally could have done something in that spot that made more sense with the rest of the art in this song.

of course it’s “flamboyant”… it’s a music video, would you like to see a boring music video?? You were so busy falsely accusing him of pitch correcting that you missed the meaning of the song. Also you waste like a third of your video just scolding people and not figuring out your own tech, edit that out.
@GenerallyNerdy
@GenerallyNerdy 2 жыл бұрын
Ok... This is clip from a live stream, sorry it wasn't perfect, but I'm a one man show, so things happen. I never said ANYTHING about the "meaning" of the song. That wasn't part of my commentary at all. Hasn't been for ANY of my other reaction videos, so why should I start with Orville? "Falsely accusing him of pitch correcting"??? Have you ever heard a human voice do that? I complimented him on his vocal talents earlier in the video, but that ONE vocal thing is ABSOLUTELY pitch corrected. Your criticism of my use of "flamboyant" in this reaction video seems to be an attempt to imply something... maybe don't beat around the bush and just come out and say it. ALSO, the opposite of flamboyant is not "boring." But keep up your false equivalency. Why the hostility when I obviously LOVED the song? Just because I can be critical of some of the technical elements does NOT diminish the overall quality or enjoyment. Thanks for paying attention, and not just looking for things to try and "dunk" on... oh wait...

I don’t have a good enough knowledge of music and producing to deny what you are saying about him using pitch correction and I don’t want to be rude to what your opinion is so I am going to state this as something hopefully less defensive of him and more of an inquiry for my own knowledge. I have seen him live and also watched his live videos and he is able to sound pretty similar to this during that. When I first heard the song I was a little out off by those vocals as well but I’ve listened to it many times and I start to get the feeling that although it is produced he doesn’t have much or any pitch correction. If it’s not that much of a waste of your time could you watch him live at stagecoach singing this song and then tell me what you think of the pitch correction and if he is using as much of that as it sounds in the studio recording
@GenerallyNerdy
@GenerallyNerdy 2 жыл бұрын
Ok... I have now watched 2 live videos AND saw Orville LIVE. I stand by my statement (mostly) If you listen to a live performance of this song you can hear the micro-tones between those notes. He slides from note to note as anyone would. In the studio recording there are no micro-tones. There is a direct jump from one to the next, which is not how the human voice works. Therefore... AUTO-TUNE. He is incredibly talented, so this is probably a style choice by him or the producer, or both. Sorry it took a while to respond to you.

In a more recent video I corrected my statement. It isn't pitch corrected (which really doesn't have anything to do with how high a note is) it is auto tuned. And very probably on purpose it would seem.

@hj-ct2qi
@hj-ct2qi 10 ай бұрын
@@GenerallyNerdy false comparison my guy. having tassels in one's face doesn't obstruct one's ability to sing or play guitar, as orville peck has demonstrated countless times. having one's face obscured does, conversely, limit the usefulness of a reaction video, because showing one's facial expressions is an important part of the reaction video format.

@@hj-ct2qi is it though? I have seen some rather successful reaction channels where the creator wears an ACTUAL mask. Also, this is kind of a reaction and initial critical analysis, so it isn't JUST about my animated (often fake on most reaction channels) physical reaction to what is happening.
