He’s an openly gay man in country music. There’s a reason for the mask. And that’s probably the main reason why he’s not blowing up the country stations or charts like he should be.

@@ClaraBell3452 americans overwhelmed by the gay shit. I say that as a man, who LOVES orville. He just exists in a weird time where we're not as accepting as we were like 10 years ago, because of how often we're TOLD to accept shit. Humans are defiant.

@@ChrisB-k7b this was kind of me. I wasnt exactly hostile to the fact that hes gay but thought it was more a joke. like " ha - gay cowboy- and then he started singing and i was like Damn i feel kind of bad for making fun... that dude can sing. Brings a bit of Marty Robbins and Johnny Cash with a bit of Broadway.

The song is about an abusive relationship. In the video, that is represented by Norman Reedus' character. When Orville Peck says, "It's True, it follows me around" he talking about the grief and burden associated with being trapped in a relationship with an abusive partner. There's some hell-a powerful lines in the song in this regard. Like when he says "Just flip a coin, cause I'm too bored to lie," it's about him not having any idea what to say to friends and family asking him about his latest bruises, or in this case, the black eye. Orville Peck surprisingly doesn't get radio play. This may have to do with the fact that he's gay, and country music hasn't quite embraced him. He definitely has an outlaw vibe to him though, and I suspect if he keeps writing and performing at this level, dude's gonna launch into the mainstream any moment. for a more outlaw country vibe, check out his song/video Daytona Sand. Loved your reaction video, and subscribed as a result!

The mask is intended to hide his identity as a gay man making country music. But it could very easily switch to being a gay version (with those frills!) of the outlaw mask.
@authoranthonyharrington
@authoranthonyharrington 3 ай бұрын
@@Newton-Reuther I'm not 100% sure that's the case. As a performer he is completely out of the closet. And most folks know his real identity is Daniel Pitout. He has gone on record that the mask isn't for hiding, he just likes the theatrics of it. A lot of old school country was about theatricality. With the rhinestone shirts, the decorative cowboy hats, the boots with spurs, etc...Also, it does give him that "mysterious' air about him.

I just found your channel because I was listening to Orville. You have an incredible journey ahead of you. He's absolutely amazing. Daytona Sand and Kalahari Down are two of my absolute favorites. Also, his newest album, Stampede, is just fun. It's all collaborations with other artists like Willie Nelson and Elton John. Midnight Ride with Kylie Minogue is one of my favorites. Welcome to the masterpiece that is Orville Peck. Also, you should do some reading up on him. He did ballet for 12 years, was the drummer in a punk band, and did musical theater - was part of national touring productions in Canada. The man has ALL the chops.

Orville Peck is the first new artist this millennia that's actually impressed me. I came across his performance of "Come on Baby, Cry" on Jimmy Kimmel and have been a fan since. The vast majority of music since the mid-90's has felt derivative, uninspired and impersonal. While Orville draws immediate comparisons to Roy Orbison, Chris Isaacs and old school country, he still comes across as fresh, original, relevant and heartfelt. His vocal range is incredible, and songs are honest, catchy and personal. I haven't seen him in concert, but they sound like a magical place where 80 year old cowpoke cry in their beers with hipsters, NRA members, and the trans community. Whatever political or cultural differences people have are left at the door and people connect through the talent and emotional honesty of Peck's music. It seems a bit odd that the only person doing justice to old school country is a gay man dressed like the Lone Ranger, but here we are. It seems pretty cool in your reaction to see a person of color accepting him on his incredible talent along with so many others despite his sexuality and musical style. This is the first time I've heard this song, and it's another great example of his vocal range and honesty in storytelling. Like you I'm baffled why this guy hasn't become huge, but he has a growing community of fans, mostly in musician circles and within the LGBTQ community. As a straight man, I find it a bit weird singing along with songs of heartbreak, about dudes, but the emotions are real and relevant to all people. I think it's likely that this guy will be multi-platinum and playing arenas before he ever gets a radio hit. While many of his songs are incredibly good, I recommend "C'mon baby cry" (Kimmel version) "Daytona Sands" and "Dead of Night". Since I found my first introduction of Orville Peck a great musical awakening, I thought it'd be fun to see others introduction to him today. It hasn't disappointed yet. I'm new to your channel and not real familiar with your musical tastes, but thought if you're not familiar you should check out some Roy Orbison. Orbison is really the singing style that Peck is emulating. I suggest this not to take away from Peck's skills, but to show you some of the best singing ever put to tape. You likely know "Pretty Woman" but Roy Orbison is so much more than that. "Crying" and "In Dreams" are great examples that show his influence on Peck and are phenomenal songs in their own right.

He doesn't need the country music industry/radio. He's doing just fine without them. Duets with Willie Nelson (at Willie's request), Shania Twain, Beck, Kylie Minogue. Dior spent $80,000 making a beaded mask for him to wear at a fashion show in Paris and then gave it to him afterwards. Tanya Tucker opened for him and then played with him at his amphitheater show in Nashville last month.

Have gotten a kick out of your discovery of and continuing Tay Tay evolution my friend. Then I go and find out you found Orville. I love you bro!! I didn't have any more reasons not to subscribe to your channel! I'm in!! There are no words to describe his voice. If you want to see and hear more, then get yourself together, sit down, get ready and watch "Let Me Drown" (Live in Nashville-it's filmed in a church). The vocals are some of the purest I've ever heard. I think you'll like it. Orville is a Country Western (more western than country with a little bit of camp) gay singer from South Africa who has been around for a little bit and is FINALLY starting to get the recognition he deserves. You are a joy to watch my friend. I appreciate your openness and honesty keep up the good work and positive vibes, they're spreading!!

I don't want to say that the reason you haven't heard of him/the reason he isn't blowing up country radio is homophobia, but it isn't not homophobia. The character following him around was a manifestation of his broken heart, Norman Reedus was an ex-boyfriend he got over at the end of the video. He and Trixie Mattel did a cover of "Jackson" a few years ago (kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWPCfJ55j8eXnNE).

Josh Turner is another country music star you should look at. I'm thinking "One Woman Man" if you are looking for something upbeat, "Would you Go with Me?" for something folksy, or "The Longer the Waiting". He even did a "Forever and Ever, Amen" with Randy Travis and you said you liked Randy. Rick Astley is great for a pop star that can do this. He's from the 80s mostly; "Never Gonna Give You Up" is quite popular with my chiblings.

About half way through your video that sounds exactly like the first few words of a Gerry Rafferty song. This was my issue I kept hearing fragments of familiar tunes throughout this, I just couldn't catch them all. It is like Elvis had a love child with Johnny Cash.......well that is not it either. I know country music has they saying about 3 chords so maybe that it is it. I would love to hear the man sing in a different genre and uncover his face so I can see that it is his lips moving! Keep introducing new artists, it is fun. Sounds like this guy has that "old time" country music voice......but man go listen to the dude sing with Willie Nelson about gay cowboys, it is fabulously unique!!!

Several reasons I believe he hasn't blown up in mainstream country music. First, he's openly gay. Second, he comes from a punk music background and was a drummer in a band of some repute. Third, Nashville these days is dominated by cookie cutter songs and has essentially blocked a new wave of outlaw country. Finally, his sound doesn't fit neatly within country and there are a lot of fans who just wouldn't like it because it's not what they're used to. From what I can tell, and I am a big Orville Peck fan, he is the main act in the underground country scene. There may be others that I haven't heard of so don't be upset if I've missed someone who might be more significant.
