A New Beginning for the Chateau

Hi, I'm Gill. Welcome to my home Chateau de Luc, which I share with my 19 precious pets. I'm passionate about animals and that's why I'm vegan. I've lived here since 2011 after moving from England. The last few years have been very difficult in so many ways. This meant that renovation of the Chateau ground to a halt due to other priorities and demands, as well lack of funds. However, now as a solo Chatelaine I want to progress with the renovations in 2023 and am aspiring to make the Chateau a happy place again by bringing it back to life. This Channel is part of my plan and I would love it if you would join me in this new chapter of life at the Chateau. The animals and I would really appreciate your support!

So happy you started! Just don't overthink it. Trust me, there are enough of us die hard château junkies that we're just happy to have new content. We've spent hours upon hours watching literal paint dry lol. It's also reeeeally good for people to see that it's HARD and expensive. And hard. When you speak the volume is very low but the music is loud. So I'm constantly having to adjust the volume to hear you. Other than that I look forward to following you on your journey. Hello Gill. I live in Tasmania and have just signed on to watch your lovely new channel. I feel your pain about the ups and downs of life and how they impact your plans in ways you could never forsee. We lost a truck load of equity in our home in the 2008 financial crisis. We lived in a rural town in Qld (Maryborough) that still has never really recovered and combined with major floods, property values took a beating. After many years we eventually sold our lovely home for LESS than the cost to have it built. Now we have a mortgage, on our current property instead of being debt free. We live on 48 acres and between the government stealing part of our property to do a road extension, subsequent flooding due to new road extension and the thousands in legal costs... you get the picture. However, after saying all of that our property is called - Somewhere Nice and it is. You can be rejuvenated by just being in the bush, watching the birds, seeing the stars at night. We also converted a barn into a two bedroom Airbnb which is doing really well. I am sure that the up times give you the strength to carry on. Hopefully your numbers will build up soon and life will get better with new projects to start. We will all be here for you, sending 'internet hugs' when life gets a bit tough or you have joys to celebrate. All the best to you Gill.

Hi Gill. Firstly, what a beautiful Chateau you have. The original features are stunning. So much potential and an exciting time for you as your renovations really begin. Love all your animals too, must be wonderful to have them around you for support. I hate being in front of a camera, you are really brave and think your first video is a great start. They will get better and better as you build experience and juggle renovations at the same time. Having owned a house in France for over 22 years, I just love to watch Chateau restorations and the progress owners make over the years. I too have had my share of bad times and can tell you that the moment you look forward, life starts again. Definitely a first order of business, that's my assessment from watching the other channels as they've sprung up; get the proper equipment for audio and become expert with it asap, so the viewer has no trouble hearing you or understanding you due to differences in accent. If only one of the chateau trailblazers would send you the equipment and instructions, since I imagine your budget isn't up to that yet! You have to equalize the volume between music, speaking, and when they are combined, too. It is very off-putting to have to keep adjusting the volume between blasting music and speech you can't hear, and you will lose viewers due to that. I did watch the entire thing, though, and I'm a dedicated viewer of The Chateau Diaries, How To Renovate A Chateau....., Escape To Rural France (Dan The Gardener), and I love Selmar & Tatyana, Marie Wiik, etc. Occasionally I watch others, as well. I do empathize with your personal life difficulties (been there, done that), and it's alright that you were transparent with who you are and what your situation is (though I do worry for your safety). But now that we know, I recommend taking the other gentle guidance above and hold the door against negativity. All of this love for chateau renovation springs from escapism, the chance to look into a prior time we don't have a hope to be living in anymore, and a joy to be found in seeing and helping it to be hauled back from decay, and allowing us to see the splendor of yesteryear. I wish you much success!

You are off to a great start with your vlogs/videos! The details of the home are just amazing and to be doing it alone (not so sure animals are helping you too much with the work ;) ) is incredibly admirable. Wow! I have one suggestion for you, and only one - a microphone you can wear so we can hear you better and the volume can be better balanced. It will make it so volume doesn't have to be adjusted between music and your talking. I very much look forward to seeing more of the Château and learning more about you. As a fellow introvert, I appreciate in my own way how you may feel and I can say, be proud and keep on with the baby steps! ❤️ I know we all are dying to see the rest of the Château and out buildings if you have any. Personally, if owners have a drawing of the layout and occasionally refer to it when doing a tour, it helps put things in perspective for us. Of course, if it is a floor or bedrooms, or servant quarters, it isn't as necessary. Or starting a tour in the main entrance and do all the rooms in one direction then go back to the starting point to do the other for reference. And of course we all love animals! And who knows what new adventure could start for you with the start of the channel! Oh, and don't feel pressured to put out a ton all the time. Regularity seems to be key. My best to you in this new chapter of your journey and I am looking forward to more as you are ready!

@@TheHappyChateau Hi Gill it’s actually not that bad compared to the Victorian weather I left behind, we had very cold winters and very hot summers, extremes either way. Although winters here are cold it hasn’t been extreme rather a milder version of winters and summers, which suits me. Before I left OZ we were experiencing longer summers of temps between 40 - 45 C not conducive to anyone’s health !

Wow - your chateau has a lot of features I've never seen in any of the other channels. That barrel ceiling - wood in amazingly good condition - very interesting carvings on the door and window surround panels, and some wall embellishments that make me think the original owner was a priest or educator or philosopher... I definitely want to see more of this place so please do continue to make videos about it. Can I just suggest one thing - that you watch the volume levels. When you speak I had to crank up the volume, then the added music would suddenly blast me out of my seat. You'll get that aspect of things under your belt faster than you probably think, and the comfort being on camera will grow as well. Be encouraged - people love to watch chateau restorations and renovations, and the uniqueness and beauty that are already there in Chateau du Luc will definitely bring people to your channel. Go for it, I for one will be here taking it in.

Love your home and all it's inhabitants! I would suggest researching Patreon and learning how to use it effectively and starting a Patreon page. I would also suggest a better mic (external mic), as someone who is also an intervert and very soft spoken, it would be easier than trying to adjust the volume of your voice when filming. I'm vegan too. You look great on camera. Maybe you've seen Stephanie talking about how she was alone for ten years in her chateau and depressed after the death of her father. She said that going on Workaway and getting volunteers is what cheered her up and brought the chateau back to life again. I think most people want to see before and after of things being fixed, so you can do that with volunteers that are pre-screened for safety.
