Looks good to me! The stripes are even at the same height. Several months ago I snagged only the third (powered) A unit in what was originally an A-B-A Weaver Lackawanna E-8 set. Haven't gotten around to running/testing it yet, but I'm encouraged by your experience. Thanks! Also, I'm always impressed with how quietly trains run on your layout with tinplate track on that foam roadbed on a foam base.

Yeah I’d say they go together pretty well. I’d love an E8, good luck with yours. The woodland scenics foam road bed is a great product and makes a big difference

Looks great on your layout. Real railroads often have mismatched units so after a while you won't even think about the differences.

Williams packs their stuff for shipment well. I found after the hurricane one of my Gigi ones in the master carton two blocks away. The master carton was a little crumpled inside there was not a scratch

Real trains don’t always match actually because of the sun and dirt making the color different. Don’t sweat the small stuff Dave! Looks great!

The difference only bothers me when photographed, when it’s sitting on the layout or running, it looks perfect to me!

I agree, you can always say the B unit is older than the A and pass is off as weathering from use. I think they look great together.

I like it Dave! Always loved the Alco FA units. I have the 1993 Lionel re-issue of the Santa Fe FA 1 pulling a string of 2400 series passenger cars. Keep enjoying your trains and the vids coming!

Weaver horns were also delicate and were packed separately in the box foam. Hence the ease at which they are lost. Those units do look good together, don't they!

I think they look great! I know I have the horns somewhere, I did t out them on when I got it because they did look so fragile. Hopefully now I can find them.

1) The FA is my most favorite North American locomotive, no matter what the livery. 2) Due to differences in paint fading from the sun, from different batches of original paint, from dirt, from lighting conditions, locomotives in the "same" colors can look different. I think you got a win here, and congratulations!

I'm sure it's been said already Dave but don't sweat the slight difference in color between the A and B units, there's plenty of color photos taken at the time the reals ones were in service and it wasn't unusual for the finishes to age differently. It shouldn't be any concern. Anyway, a great find for $50, it's gorgeous! In fact the A and B unit together look like they're "All business!" Not being s super-big diesel fan I don't have any Alco FA's but if I find a Williams set I can "steal" that may change! Thanks for posting!

Nice looking Williams Alco B unit, Dave. Honestly, the colour difference isn't that noticeable from a distance. I suppose in the train room, the difference is much easier to notice, but you're satisfied with the result. I really like the Pennsy passenger consist lead by those Alcos. Very impressive. You a great purchase.

Thanks! When the engine is on the track and moving I can’t tell there is any difference. It just looks like a set. The passenger cars were fun to run with it.

Great find Dave. We all have certain things about this hobby that's our own personal pet peeves. Personally I think it looks awesome. Probably no one would have ever noticed it if you hadn't pointed it out. I did the same thing looking for a B unit for my postwar SantaFe and got a great deal for 40 dollars and have my ABA set. Just recently I found another great deal at Trainz for a like new SantaFe B unit with the F3 railsounds. Now I have an ABBA set with postwar 2343's with railsounds. Of course they are all Lionel screen tops in the warbonnet paint scheme so they match very well even though they're from different years. After all, we are collectors with emphasis on operators. Kinda hard to run them if you don't collect them. I've done the exact same thing. I'm budget minded myself. I'm easily convinced and justified if it puts a smile on my face and a great feeling in my heart. I think we have been condition from our earlier ancestors as hunter gatherers. It's the thrill of the hunt for a good deal. Because of supermarkets, now we use it finding bargins on trains. It's okay. We can't help it. It's not our fault. It's just evolution.

I think they look great together as the prototypes often had color variations. Although, you may want to remove the horn of the B-unit and put it on the A-unit. The B's didn't have horns, lol

The color difference barely shows up on video. In the real world, you would probably have slightly different shades of color, depending on paint batch and how long since previously painted. Nice find. Congrats

Really good choice Dave! I noticed that the stripes and lettering on the b-unit are a little thinner then the engine. But still a good find non the less. This reminds me of another train video that I was watching, where this guy had a menards Santa-fe engine and the he was running the engine with a Williams B-unit. Shockingly both units were like a match made in heaven.

I just received a Lionel item in the mail and the box and packing materials smelled like an ash tray. I had to toss the packing material in the outside trash and wash the boxcar. It would not have bothered me years ago when I was doing service calls on jukeboxes in smoky bars.

Ick. I think my worst smelling train was the Chicago Alton. It stunk for at least a week even after I washed it. Needless to say any boxes went right in the trash!
