I was a turbo engineer & 50% of studs / bolts used to shear. If your Easi - Out is good quality, you can shatter it with a punch & blow the bits out with compressed air. A bonus is the hammering also loosens the stud. I did,nt have access to a welder & so it was the only way. Of course if it,s a cheapo extractor it won,t shatter.

Ever since I started using the MIG on broken bolts, I banished bolt extractors from the garage. I was tired of breaking a $10~$20 tool on one bolt. I would have used the remaining broken bolt extractor as a chisel to loosen and then a metal pick to remove the piece stuck in the broken bolt before welding the nut on. Also, when I have a broken bolt that is flush or below the surface, I build up a pile of weld... using a wet rag to cool it so it builds up. Then I hammer on a nut and weld it to the pile of weld. Just be careful not to weld the bolt to the head.
@alanhicks33612 ай бұрын
If heads are cast iron and aluminium no way your going to weld stud to head
@buckykattnj2 ай бұрын
@@alanhicks3361 Tell that to the cast iron headed '95 LT1 I have in my garage. I had 4 broken bolts... 3 were unmolested and I zapped them right out. The 4th broken bolt was welded to the head by whoever previously worked on it. I don't know what they did to it, but it won't budge and I can't find where the bolt ends and the head begins. I had a 100% success rate after around a hundred bolts until I got to this one. I really have to clear all the garbage off that car and return to that project.

That may be the most honest comment I think I’ve seen. And honestly, you know we all start somewhere. I’ve been doing hot rods since I was probably 12. Everything from Vespa scooters to Harleys wooden boats, hot rods, cars trucks. I’m just a gearhead at heart. Trying to present something in video form is not as easy as it sounds by any stretch of the imagination. Although I really do enjoy the creation portion of it. But you have to start somewhere. I just went back and re-watched my first video that I edited on my phone. Complete garbage. How I ever I think they are getting slowly better.

Yes, it’s definitely a lot of thinking that goes into these things. The one thing that kind of bums me out as I cannot take the body from the chassis and do a nice clean set up. Working around the body is pretty tough. My next project will be 100% frame off not in bolt I think. But that’s a few months down the road.

A good way to get broken studs or bolts out is. To drill a hole in the bolt and then pound in a torx bit just slightly larger than the hole. Then use the torx bit to back out the bolt. No welding required. Hasn't failed me yet 👍 also soaking it with a good penatrating oil like PB blaster or kroil. Not wd 40. Or seafoam.

Use the triangle piece of angle iron that is leaning up against the fence to pick up the doghouse from 3 points. One corner to each fender, and the point of the triangle to the radiator support. Then find the center of gravity and use the engine hoist.

If you didn't get that stud out yet. Drill A pilot hole with A harden drill bit.,or titanium drill bit A good one to. Smaller drill than the stud of course to weld into the easy out and washer to remove those with. And repeat the same process of backing it out slowly.,or slow and steady.
