Does my pronunciation of "matten filter" enrage you? Blame it on that thing I blame it on.

Matten filter user in Europe here! I pronounce the T, because the original Germans (who invented the things) definitely pronounce the T. They work great and are ideal for labyrinth fish like Bettas and gouramis. And maintenance is...pretty much non-existent! You just leave it alone until it's completely blocked, which can literally take years to happen, then rinse in old tank water. I recommend them to everyone who loves Bettas!

Linguist here! That sound in matten or mitten is actually the same as in ladder or kiddy! At least in American English. It's a sound called a "tap" because t and d are articulated in the same place in your mouth, except d is voiced (hold your hand to your throat and go d-d-d) and t is voiceless (now go t-t-t)! A tap is the sound between the two! People who don't speak American English have a lot of trouble producing it. :) Signed, a crazy linguist fish lady

I use this "matten" as a divider for my 10 gal Betta tank. But i use the thinner version, enough to fit into suction cup. I do think this kind of divider is the best because : it's not see through at all, it's doesn't affect the flow thanks to that tiny holes, and it's an extra biological filtration.

I love them. I did a corner matten filter in my 30 gallon and it’s got a water pump behind it and the heater. Are use the water pump to move the water because now I’ve added a planter above with a bunch of pot those and lava rocks but it worked fine without it, I’ve had it for Close to two years, the nice part is you almost don’t have to clean it. One hint I can give you is put some dark plastic or something over the top of it so your light doesn’t hit the top directly because it will grow all kinds of wonderful algae and weird stuff on there. But my tank is virtually maintenance-free other than changing water. I vacuum the gravel every few weeks but usually just change 5 gallons of water a week. I had a few guppies in there and some ember tetras, the guppies died because they only live about a year and a half to two years anyway but the teachers are good, I started out with six cherry shrimp and a few near right snails. Somewhere along the way I picked up some Ponds’s nails which I love because between the shrimp in the pond snails it’s pretty much zero maintenance, two of the guppies died and we’re pretty much disposed of before I ever found them and I had six narrates nails and one is left alive, they only live a year or so also. I think shrimp do way better with cover, I put a pile of smooth rocks in the tank and that’s when they really started breeding, and of course they love plants. I don’t call them and never found any dead ones, I know they die but I guess the snails get them first and once they start breeding it’s just sort of automatic. I think the biggest thing about shrimp keeping as you watch all these videos and they tell you about all these special foods and temperatures and all the things you should and shouldn’t do. I think that’s just people being overly obsessed, I did that for the first few months but then realized it really doesn’t matter. Lol. Then I started watching Lucas from LRB aquatics, he’s one breeding awards and all kinds of stuff and he does almost nothing with his tanks but change water he lets them grow over and feeds all his fish the same food whether it’s shrimp or whatever they all get tetra color granules. I watched him in a bunch of people doing natural biologically filter tanks and I’ve kind of done a halfway version of those, I use Low light plants, just Anubis and Java ferns and I keep some lava rocks here in there and black sand on the bottom and I took some black PVC tubes and cut them up and glued them together and covered them with a bunch of small black smooth stones I bought at Walmart and I throw an Indian almond leaves in there every now and again and some cholla wood. I really don’t feed the shrimp because I figured they get enough from the fish waste and the shrimp and snails pick up the extra. A judge how much I feed based on how fast the snails are growing, if I only see a few on the glass I feed a little more if I see 20+ I figure I’m doing good and if I see a lot more than that I’ll cut back. Once in a great while I’ll throw a little kale or spinach in there and I just use small pieces and I’ll leave it in there because the snails will finish it off, other than that I just clean the front glass. I’ve never cleaned them out and filter but the water level is the same on both sides even with 160 gallon pump. Every now and again I’ll scrape the algae from the glass lid under the light but I usually dump some of that back in the tank and they seem to eat it up pretty quickly, but unless you’re sitting there obsessing and trying to call them out and get the perfect grade of shrimp, they can be really really easy, honestly I think the plants are much harder. But I love the matten filter And as long as you keep something under the light to shade theTop of it it’s pretty much zero maintenance. I guess someday I’ll have to go in there and clean it but right now the flow through there is fine and I don’t see anything on there that the shrimp haven’t eaten other than some plant roots. I still get A little of the stringy algae at the top of the filter, it’s not the fuzzy kind it’s just like a green string with a little white dots in it but I just pull some of that off every three or four months and it’s pretty easy. I don’t call the shrimp so I’m getting some that are looking a little more faded and wider but I’m also getting some dark black ones and somehow I got a couple red Riley’s in there out of the babies. But I just leave them. Someday I plan to add a few more for new genetics, But they’re pretty much zero maintenance at this point and the huge oversize filter is everything I’ve always wanted in a filter, a.k.a.zero maintenance and it blends into the black background.

Im happy with my Aquarium Co-op sponge and HOB filters. I considered a Matten, but my tanks are so small, and I don't have the space for one. As I move to bigger tanks, I'll consider one. Just not sure- how do you maintain a Matten?
@lilirose72
@lilirose72 3 жыл бұрын
They require almost no maintenance! You leave it alone until it's completely clogged, which takes a few years- then take them out and rinse in old tank water like a sponge filter. It's not advised to clean them before they clog, as everything that grows on them is your biofilter, and also because they are a pain to take out and put back!

I was going to try something like a matten filter on a backyard pond, but now we're talking about moving out so I'll have to save that project for another year. I would have made the foam into a semicircle, and fill the empty space with lava rock for extra biological filtration.

I have one matten filter installed in a 10g and have 3 others still in the box. So far I like it, but I think I need more air to get the best out of it. Regular sponges are definitely easier as far as maintenance goes, but I think there is a lot of potential with the matten. Central air is the next upgrade to the fish room, so I'm hoping that really puts it over the top.
@deikeb.7790
@deikeb.7790 3 жыл бұрын
In Germany those are pretty common in fishbreeding. You can even buy whole tanks already fitted with them. Most of the time you can leave them alone for years without cleaning and they are by far more efficient than smaller sponge filters, because you have far more space for beneficial bacteria. I used to hide them with Monte Carlo or mosses. Just shove them in there or, if you have a finer pad, use a planting mesh.

Been using them for quit some time now, the only difference is I use a small internal filter to cycle the water, because of the noise the bubbles make, but it works great! I also put some ceramic filter media behind it for extra biomass

If I kept my tanks short side out I would use them but I always have my tank long side facing outwards and don't want the eyesore. I did want to try a corner matten filter on the two back corners of my 75 gallon but changed my mind when I realized I would have to use the tank as a room divider behind the sofa. If the next 4 foot tank I set up is against a wall I would like to do two back corner matten filters (Swiss Tropicals sells the corner filters I don't know if anyone else does) with a large Seachem tidal 110 in the center. I think a black matten corner filters would blend much better into a solid black background then a traditional free standing black sponge filter.

That makes total sense, if you want a pretty tank then a matten filter probably isn't ideal!

I'll have to try the Brightwell product. Do you consider any advantages to this product over using established water (+ established sponge filter) taken from a long running tank?
@SimplyBetta
@SimplyBetta 3 жыл бұрын
Nope, using an established filter works great, especially if the water you're putting it into isn't completely clean (so the bacteria can still thrive). Sometimes I like to start things clean, though, especially because I often put fish directly from miscellaneous farms in Asia into my tanks! I don't want a situation like what poor Jenny from Solid Gold went through! I'm going to be re-setting my tank rack soon and starting it completely clean, so using the bacterial starters and "food".

I know of a pleco breeder who just got rid of all their matten filters because they ended up with gnats breeding in the moist top section of the filters and they couldn't get rid of the gnats because of that. Just something to be aware of. I've not considered trying them. I personally think they'll be super hard to clean out once they ultimately get dirty and clogged up. But of course, to each their own. 😊

HMFs are good. Watch the outflows with Bettas though. You may need something over them. I have a square, freestanding hmf and it is great. It doesn't polish the water well due to the pore size but it certainly filters. Grow java fern, other plants and moss on it to hide it. 😉 Good luck!
@SimplyBetta
@SimplyBetta 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips! I was actually thinking about trying to make a moss wall on it, have you tried that?
@williamganley4739
@williamganley4739 3 жыл бұрын
I have used fishing line and a sewing needle to attach Java Moss but once it's grown in it acts as Velcro when it comes time to clean the sponge. Also if you add a heater behind the HMF add a extra air stone behind the filter to circulate the water so your heater doesn't short cycle. I noticed inconsistent temperatures without the additional air stone in my RCS tank.

You also could hide filter materials in that small compartment behind the filter mat, fx those ceramic tubes which provide more surface for the bacteria. Mattenfilter actually is a German word, so you‘d pronounce it with double T, like you prefer it. I am curious to see if you like it, once you have used it for a while.

I used it before. It is very easy to clean as most of the gunk settles on the bottom in the section with the tubes & heater. The only con is that some shrimp & babies do get behind there somehow and when u go to clean, they may end up going down the drain.

I have made my own mattin filters for decades. I would customise the porosity of the phone there all available on Amazon all different grades. And I would use PVCAnd the nearest tone or 2 if I used two uplift tubes. As far as functionality they worked great in there were advantages but recently I discontinued when away from them not because of any kind of water issue but As far as functionality they worked great in there were advantages but recently I discontinued when away from them not because of any kind of water issue but, Because I've moved to less filtration. So I can say they work great. If they suit your needs and their aesthetic works for you I think you'll be happy.

Nice explanation :P You spent more time talking about the pronunciation than the filter itself. "The term 'filter' for a Mattenfilter is actually misleading. The purpose of the foam is not to filter the water as is often assumed. The foam serves as the habitat for a vast array of microorganisms that include bacteria, archaea, worms, ciliates, flagellates, and many others." - swisstropicals.com In other words, it's similar to a deep substrate undergravel filter without the gravel. These things are not meant to be cleaned (hence, not filters pre se), they are meant to supply DOC from the water column and waste to a community of organisms including algaes, which the shrimp feed on. Even though the animal waste won't fall directly on it like with a gravel filter on account of it being vertical, it will likely suck in much of the shrimp waste as they crawl along it and poop on it. Long story short, why not just have an undergravel filter? Not sure really, I'll have to do more research I guess.

I have used matten filters. En yes they are pretty decent overall. In my experience not the best at mechanical filteration. Not that they won't do any but it simply is not as fine as floss. For a showtank I would not recommend them for many other aplications I will. The a is pronounced much the a in far the double.T is pronounced as a single one it is just there to indicate that we are talking about the plural of mat wich means yes mat. With a single t "maten" you would indicating you are talking about the plural of Maat. wich means size or can mean buddy/friend in Dutch.
