A New Kind of Rain Tire for Electric Skateboards

Sometimes you just have to ride in wet conditions but urethane wheels get extremely slippery, and pneumatic wheels don't fit your board. Exway's Hydro all-season wheels for electric skateboards aim to solve that with directional rubber treads fused onto urethane. I imagine these would be good for LDP as well. [Edit: While these wheels improve wet traction, I recommend against riding during a downpour and wet conditions in general because water getting inside your board is a fire hazard. Splashes from wet roads and small puddles are generally fine but it also depends on how well the board is weatherproofed. Many places rain a lot (including Shanghai) so wet roads are sometimes inevitable, and these wheels help with that, but avoid getting your board wet if you can.] --- My voice was not cooperating on the day I was going to film myself so I went with subtitles and borrowed kamijuins’ style (and his dog). I have the Cloud wheels and the first ride on the Tynee was just rain all day. Having the treads on the slick pavement was a relief honestly, and the board is able to get me basically across town.

I bought them and I regret it. The range is as bad as with Cloudwheels and the traction is rather unpredictable in dry conditions. On cobblestone those wheels tried to kill me a few times.

@@TeamHeat604 I love my Cloudwheels. I'm getting 12-16km on the 27km rated Exway Flex with 44T pulleys with 120mm Clouds. Those Hydro Wheels are advertised for good range. I don't think the give you that.

@@gonzoschmalanzo3066 Thank you for your detailed analysis. I still don't understand why I don't experience those grip-related issues with PUs and CWs. My emphasis lies on the unpredictable nature of losing grip with those Hydros and not the obvious part. There is a huge variety of cobblestone. Some of them even I would consider stupid to ride on and therefore I do not.

I want to see a comparison video of these wheels against other wheels. Particularly the popular 120mm cloud wheels, your standard urethane wheels and some pneumatics. Seeing how the performance differs among these wheels in wet, dirt, gravel type conditions would help understand how everything stacks up..

These wheels are counterintuitive. Like your board manufacturer says don’t ride in the rain! These wheels are like ride in the rain or wet surfaces! Think more boards need to come with splash guards over something like this. Great video as always man.

Skateboards don't need a rain tire. The point of grooves in a tire is to prevent hydroplaning. First off most skateboard wheels dont' even have air in them so you can't hydroplane in the first place. Hydroplaning happens when the pressure of the water trying to get out of the way of the tire is greater than the pressure of the air inside the tire so the tire surface lifts away from the road and is only touching on the outside edges still, which isn't enough surface area to create enough friction, so you slide. If you're on a bicycle tire the air pressure is much much greater so you can't hydroplane, but they put tread in the tires anyway because people expect it. With a urethane wheel there is no air so it's going to require enormous pressure to push it out of the way.

On one hand, I have to say, these wheels look fantastic...almost make me want to compare them to some of my RC tires. Then, my brain takes over, reminding me that Esk8s are NOT supposed to be ridden when it's raining, and SHOULDN'T be ridden when the ground is wet (especially as wet as it was in the video). I can say, with 125% certainty, that I will NOT be getting these. Nevertheless, they do still look cool. 🤙🏼

Two questions, what beats the Flex Pro in terms of quality & range? secondly, I totally get how to replace the rear wheel with the hydro wheels but, does the hydro wheel come with that ABEC pulley or it has to be purchased separately? if yes, what's the size or what should we look out for? does the same ABEC pulley allow use to install the transluscent 105mm cloudwheels? and lastly, in this video you showed how to replace the rear wheel, do we have to replace the front wheels stock rings behind the stock 90mm wheel or it doesn't have any? Thanks.

I tried several different kinds of wheels. For range, I stuck with 120mm Cloudwheels. For grip and comfort I used those hollowed 115mm tire like wheels. But when I switched to 175mm pneumatics... I never went back. Now i focus on bigger battery and motors.

The tread wears down quickly and on our 3rd world UK roads the gravel and rough broken tarmac split them easily. Pretty quickly you have to replace them but it's only the outside tread that's gone, you have an entire wheel now going in the bin. Seems very wasteful to me. Wheras urethane wheels you can use them right down to the bearings, as I do.

Definitely don’t recharge at freezing or below. As for riding, expect lower performance but I’m not sure if permanent damage would be done to the battery. Discharging should be ok but you’re also recharging when you brake, so I’m not sure. Hopefully someone else can answer.

meepo hurricane already has AT wheels but I've heard people ride it in rainstorms and be fine.

Small puddles and wet ground like in the video should be fine for /most/ boards. Would not ride in heavy rain and generally I would avoid water completely but sometimes you can’t.

@@DanielKwan Yeah I think the main issue lies in that most companies don't cover water damage under warranty. I've ridden my board in wet conditions and it has gotten drenched at least four times and It still works great. Most all terrain boards do pretty well in wet conditions the problem is on the offchance your board does get water damage you're pretty screwed. I'd really love to see a highly waterproof board in the future, maybe does really well in sand by the beach.

Yeah, as a general rule of thumb the smaller the wheel the greater the range. Other factors are there but for the most part thats wheel size is what matters.

I haven’t seen a board I’d trust to ride for a prolonged period in the rain. Most have some sort of gasket but I haven’t seen anything that lets water drain out. Also, haven’t seen a waterproofed remote.

GRIP, and for the occasional wet spot. That is why I ordered them. My area is a gets a little damp this time of year, and I am looking to have better traction with these. And I am also thinking about 3D printing some fenders as well. Not sure yet.

The problem of riding your skateboard in the wet . Is not that you lose traction although that has merit but more that you increase the risk of turning your PEV into a bomb . Surprised that Exway even went there. 😳
