This is a cover. Original sung by Tommy James and the Shodells in 1967. Tiffany's version is 1987(released not long before her 16th birthday) and it went to #1 in the US. The original went to #4.

Tiffany based all her success on an intense Mall-Tour at the beginning of her career. She literally went through all the american malls and played there, sometimes for free, and that made her a star back then. Fun Fact: If you know the TV Show 'How i met your mother', the character 'Robin Sparkles' and her hit 'Lets go to the mall' are a hommage to this.

Well, dang. Now that you've done Tiffany, you have to do Debbie Gibson. These two were the teen queens of the mid-80s, and were on the radio so often they were practically interchangeable. (They were a breath of fresh air since the Go-Gos had broken up by then.) Tiffany had huge hits with this one (which is a remake of a Tommy James) song, as well as "I Saw Him Standing There" (a Beatles song with a twist), "Could've Been" and "All This Time". Debbie, around the same time, had huge airplay hits with "Only In My Dreams", "Shake Your Love", "Foolish Beat", and "Lost In Your Eyes". Neither one built a fanbase as huge as Madonna's, but they sure gave it their best shot. Both are now in their early 50s and still going (and still hot)!

I loved this version and her voice as a teen. She was huge for a bit and then she just fizzled out. But she had a good 3 or 4 tunes over two good records. Then I moved to Hollywood/WeHo in my 20s and she lived in my neighborhood, shared same dog park. Such a lovely kind person. Still performing. She actually dog sat for me once in a pinch and I did the same for her when she traveled. Rarely talked about her career, it’s kind of not cool to do unless you really know someone or they bring it up somI never asked. But I did tell her I was a fan and saw her in concert. Not in a mall lol.

This was an interesting phenomenon. Tiffany was one the first to use mall touring/concerts to build a fan base and promote songs. Also, this is a cover of one by Tommy James and the Shondells (forgive spelling) and almost at the same time, Billy Idol was covering Tommy James’ “Mony Mony”, pretty much trading spots for #1. James was happy since the covers were both good and other artists, like Joan Jett” were reviving his songs.

This was Tiffany's first hit - a great cover. Check out All This Time, I Saw Him Standing There (Beatles cover), and Could've Been. And you MUST check out Debbie as well. She wrote ALL of her own music at 16 - and is an incredible artist. Lost in Your Eyes, Electric Youth, Over the Wall, and Foolish Beat are my personal faves. Shopping malls were much different in the 1980s. They served as a social gathering place for teenagers (remember, this is pre-internet, pre-social media days)... not just a place for shopping. Malls were a huge deal and packed all the time. It's where you went to hang out with friends, spend time with friends from other schools, etc. Tiffany did a mall tour, playing concerts at various malls (and yes, many malls actually had a stage in the center of the mall). I can't imagine a teenage today saying "Hey, mom/dad, I'm going to go hang out at the mall."

Love that you got to Tiffany! Yes they definitely had mall tours in the 80’s…was a free way to get your name out there! She actually has a really good voice. One of my favorites of hers is “All This Time”. A lot of people mentioning Debbie Gibson and I agree you need to check her out, too. Back in the day, fans and press tried to pit the 2 of them against each other (I guess you couldn’t have 2 popular teen female singers at the same time😅) and they tried to make it seem like they were stiff competition and at each other’s throats or something. The ladies maintain that unbeknownst to the press they were admirers of each other and became very good friends. They later toured together. I always loved that about them and made me admire them more😊

She and Debbie Gibson (check out her songs, “Only In My Dreams” and “Foolish Beat”) were the queens of bubble gum pop music back in the day. I think Tiffany was 15 when she released this song, and Debbie Gibson wasn’t much older when she came on the scene. Us grade school girls thought they were both just sooooo cool. Edit: And the mall thing was kind of started by Tiffany; I think that’s how she built her fan base. Also, remember that malls were THE place for middle and high schoolers to hang out and be seen back then. Even in high school in the 90s my friends and I used to spend hours walking around the mall doing absolutely freaking nothing (because we had no money) and having a blast doing it.

I was a punk rocker in the 70s and 80s, and to be honest this was a guilty pleasure song of mine. I totally denied it of course, blasting the Dead Kennedys or Sex Pistols, etc... if anyone said anything. She had a couple of good songs and her voice still hits a good nerve with me. This is one if the songs I listen too to cheer myself up.

I believe Tiffany was discovered while singing in malls, so it sort of became part of who she was. She used to sing covers of songs, this one included. For another teen girl artist from the 80's who was very talented, I'd recommend "In your eyes" by; Debbie Gibson. 😁

1. Now you need to listen to the original. 2. I second, third, fourth, fifth, whatever, the vote for you to react to Debbie Gibson. What an amazingly talented artist, doing SO much not only in front of, but behind the microphone and mixing board, and hitting the charts at such a young age.... yeah, definitely voting for Debbie (or Deborah as she likes to be called now)

The mall concert stuff was definitely a Tiffany thing, from what I've heard. Three Tommy James and the Shondells covers took off in the 1980s - Joan Jett's "Crimson and Clover", Billy Idol's "Mony Mony" and this. In fact "Mony Mony" and this song fought it out at the top of the charts in 1987.

That’s not an official title for her but she had a huge shopping mall tour thing going on when she debuted. Debbie Gibson and her were like the two main crushes we all had. Yup Debbie Gibson is next on your list.

Tiffany's mall tour was an idea her management came up with to showcase her music. Most bands establish themselves by playing in bars and night clubs. However, Tiffany was only 16 when her album came out. Most states would allow someone under 18 to perform in a bar, but they had to leave as soon as their show was done. And the way bands established themselves wasn't just by playing, but by doing meet and greets after the show signing autographs, taking pictures, etc. Since she had to leave as soon as she finished playing, she couldn't stick around to meet the fans. Her management realized that most of her fans were going to be teenagers, who in the 80's spent most of their free time at the mall, and the mall tour was started. I'm sure there were other bands who did this as well, but Tiffany is the only one I can remember where MTV showed up to some of her mall shows. This song was the second single released from that first almbum and hit number 1 on the Billboard charts along with her follow up "Could've Been." She became the youngest artist to have two consecutive number 1 singles and the youngest to have a number 1 album. Billboard ranked it as the number 9 album of the year in 1988. As others have mentioned, there was a big rivalry between Tiffany and another teen female act Debbie Gibson. I'd say Debbie probably had the bigger career overall, with more singles that charted than Tiffany, but both had very similar vibes. In the 2000's they both ended up posing for Playboy. They later got together and starred in the SyFy Channel movie "Mega Python vs Gatoroid" (not kidding, that was the title). In the movie they played up their rivalry from a couple decades earlier and had a huge catfight in the movie that was pretty hilarious.

As others have pointed out, Tiffani did a cover on this song, but she did have a couple of more songs after this before disappearing for awhile. Now, she appeared on the Talk Is Jericho podcast (Chris Jericho hosts) I think last year....and she still sings this song, but does so as a rock cover. So it is less pop and more rock from her now. Also a side note, Tiffani is from Syria originally. And for those wondering Syrian people have a high rate of people who are redheads. Ginger. Almost as many as Ireland. WWE wrestler Sami Zayn is another notable name who is from Syria originally as well.

How 80s can you get? Yes, Tiffany made a name for herself singing in malls. Ask anyone who was cognizant of pop culture in the late 80s about Tiffany and they'll say "That's the girl who did the mall concerts." I know you love everything you've heard from Tommy James & The Shondells. This was originally recorded by them, you should check out the original. Although Tiffany's is a good arrangement with the drum beat & violin shots. If you want to see some killer dance moves, check out "Makeba" by Jain. Would be good for Female Friday.

Yes some teens performed in malls as a way to be seen but also to get a fan base. You have to remember these were the days before boy/girl bands were the big thing and social media was nonexistent so this is how you got promoted. I wasn't a fan of Tiffany like I was of Debbie Gibson because Tiffany didn't sing any original songs but covers. If she did, I don't remember her ever releasing them. Debbie Gibson wrote, sang and played on all her music. We're the same age (Tiffany a year younger) so it was so cool to see someone my age rocking it out on MTV.
