When Madonna hit big in 1984, all the girls in high school began to dress like her and do their hair like her. For a brief time from 1984-1985, little Madonna clones were running all over the country and they loved her and her fashion. It was a sight to behold, especially as a teenage young man in my Junior Year of High School.

This video is based on a great Marilyn Monroe movie called, “Gentleman Prefer Blondes” - definitely worth a watch! The song “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend” is basically the same set, choreography & dress as In this Madonna video. So, there is a lot of old Hollywood movie/ storyline behind this song/video. In the video, Madonna’s movie character is materialistic, but as she shows at the end, that isn’t her. I’ve heard an interview where she said she hates being referred to as “the material girl” - she’s never been able to shake the nickname due to this famous video/song!

Madonna's early career music had a more "pop" sound. She was constantly re-inventing herself to stay one step ahead of what everyone else was doing. As she became more and more popular, her vocal range, subject matter, and song structure became more and more sophisticated. Madonna and Michael Jackson ruled the air waves in the early 80's. Ironically, I am / was the same age as both of them........

I'd recommend "Crazy for You", "Live to Tell", "Rain", "Open Your Heart", and "Into the Groove" as some songs that were big hits, but aren't as iconic as some of her other songs. Crazy for You is my favorite Madonna song - it's a beautiful love song that she sings wonderfully! Madonna was one of the true icons of the 80's (with hits into the 90's, but I'm talking about defining a decade). She was one of the first, along with MJ, to take full advantage of the power of MTV at that time, and define (and redefine) herself through the videos she put out. This was her "Material Girl" phase, and it (and "Like a Virgin") launched her as a megastar. Her later songs were completely different, from this and from each other. There's no doubt that she captivated the popular audience for well over a decade, and still resonates with fans today. That's a hell of a career!

She was an actress playing a 'material girl'. At the beginning of the video, she was in the dressing room on the phone to a girlfriend talking about how some guy thinks he can buy her with expensive things. She wasn't impressed. The 'director' in the video gave her flowers after she'd finished filming and took her on a date in his truck. She was after a man who could give her the things that money can't buy. ❤

This song was a huge hit! Also, near the beginning of the video, they have her talking to a friend where she makes it clear that she is NOT a material girl, and asks her friend if she wants the diamond necklace she was given. The "song" in the movie was her acting like she was, but just playing a part.

Check out masterpieces “Rain,” “Take a Bow,” “Ray of Light” and “Frozen.” The songs are incredible and the videos are visually stunning. If you want something smokin’ hot, take a look at “Justify My Love,” “Erotica” and “Human Nature.” 2005’s Confessions on a Dance Floor is Madonna’s third best album and also top-notch with “Hung Up,” “Sorry” and “Jump.” Enjoy!

This was released in 1984/5 and, yes, her voice was much higher at the start of her career. Madonna always cited Material Girl as her least favourite of all her songs, although she seems to have reclaimed it over the past decade and performed it on her last tour. The "materialistic" lyrics are a bit cringeworthy but I love that she undermines them in the video with the big star being won over by the handpicked flowers and the rundown truck. Very clever.

I mean...you can never go wrong with the queen of pop Madonna..most specialy with her classic songs such as material girl...she is a chameleon and always updating her music and her looks which is her strength and I luv her for that ❤️...wish though u can react to other 80's group who had hits back then but were underated like the group the jets with their hit songs like...crush on you and ballads like make it real & you got it all...anyway like always thanks for the wonderful treat.

Our voices, like most body parts, are fresh when we are younger and change over time with use, especially people who use their voices for work, ie., singers, sportscasters, teachers, etc. She was in her mid-20s when she sang this and was 32ish when she recorded Vogue with a lot of touring and a couple of new albums in between. Lots of vocal cord use.

We went to a Rolling Stones concert in Chicago. There was also a Madonna concert that night. We drove past tens of thousands of teenage girls, all dressed like Madonna. It was surreal. Stones were at Rosemont and Madonna at Soldier Field, if I remember right.

Definitely my favorite song by her, Actually the songs about material girls and how she doesn't want to be one... However, what is often missed is that Madonna was actually playing the role of an actress as a materialistic woman, and at the end of the video, she can be seen out of her actress role and getting into an old pick-up truck with the director, suggesting she is not actually wealthy at all. Indeed, the director pretends to be penniless as he realises that she has no interest in being showered in luxury gifts. In one scene, he amusingly hands Madonna a bunch of cheap-looking flowers in her dressing room. The song cranks if you have a good system in your car

This is the one that gave her the nickname of the “Material Girl” in the 80’s. The more videos and music of hers you cover you will understand why they call her also, “the Mother of Reinvention”. The video is a homage to Marilyn Monroe’s routine in the movie, Gentleman Prefer Blondes. You might want to check that out for your movie reactions. Look up her other songs: Who’s That Girl, Borderline, I’ll Remember, Rain, La Isla Bonita…and so many more.

Fun Fact.... Nile Rogers, Bernard Johnson and Tony Thompson all performed and produced all of the songs on this specific album. Them 3 are from the old 70s band "Chic". Tony Thompson has the most recognizable drum pattern, he teamed up with Robert Palmer and John and Andy Taylor from Duran Duran to create The Powerstation, Bernard produced that project as well.Tony played for Duran Duran for an album. As a drummer myself, I love jamming this beat.

The whole thing was a riff of Marylin Monroe. The pink dress and set was from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. And the beginning where they said she could be a star is exactly what happened to Marylin but she just wanted happiness, with or without the money.

👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Yes, one of the many popular songs from Madonna early in her career! By now you may have already read this video where Madonna is in this lovely pink dress that this scene is taken from the old movie "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" with Marilyn Monroe's singing a song called "Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend" Amber and Jay I think you missed the scene near the beginning where she receives a gift from a guy and it turned out to be a diamond necklace, she phones a friend of hers saying that “he is still trying to impress her with expensive gifts”, and she asks her friend “Do you want it” she not accepting it for herself, she is giving it away, remember he's a Hollywood director trying to win Madonna’s heart , and he watches her while discovering that, contrary to her song, Madonna was not impressed by money and expensive gifts, so he pretended to be penniless and succeeded in taking her out on a date, and I liked how he bought that truck from the old man near the end of the video! Enjoyed your reaction as always! ☮💕
