Normally when we talk about new retro gaming hardware we are talking about MiSTer FPGA or what is MiSTer FPGA...but today we are talking about the ITX LLAMA, or the Itx-Llama if you like hyphens! A new retro PC that runs DOS and Windows 98 on period accurate hardware with 3D accelerator cards like a 3DFX Voodoo3 or a Nvidia TNT 2! So let's build it and discuss! Because suddenly the best retro gaming console is a NEW modern retro pc!
So let's do a Retro PC build with a 3DFX Voodoo3 card (or 3DFX Voodoo 3) because we want to talk about the best pc builds and new pc builds...for retro gaming and Windows 98 gaming!
and YES I know Doom isn't in the correct aspect ratio! It just looks better in the thumb lol

The Hexen 2 mouse issue is a Quake problem that modern gamers WHINE AND DENY existed, and it's NOT JUST THE MOUSE. Quake 1-2 always lowered resolution via gl_rounddown, and the gamma/intensity was INCORRECT OOTB, so there were DOS config tools to fix color in BOTH games. There IS NO DEFAULT SETTINGS ARE CORRECT OPTION. Quake 1 also supported transparent water, BUT the game files WERE NEVER PATCHED, so you had to DIY with some tool or be stuck using r_novis, which had a performance penalty. Quake 1 also did NOT have working full bright lighting effects in OpenGL, and IDK if that was ever officially patched in the original engine or Hexen 2, but there are source ports. You can argue the original Quake was meant to be run in DOS software mode, BUT this is absolutely not the case for anything past the original since all future games were PRIMARILY coded for 3dfx, and anyone saying otherwise IS A LIAR. Quake 2 also supported shadow effects that nobody knows even existed, because it was not enabled by default. Quake 2 also supported config scripting, so you could write your own mouse 2 zoom script. You were SERIOUSLY MEANT TO FIX AND CONFIGURE THE GAME MANUALLY back then. If you go back to DOS games, sound itself would NOT WORK unless you setup the sound card. Quake carried this philosophy, and is the reason why autoexec.cfg existed. You put your fixes in this text file. It was not designed to work perfectly ootb, it was designed for YOU to fix it.

@JohnDoe-ip3oq
@JohnDoe-ip3oq Күн бұрын
@VideoGameEsoterica it is, but this is coming off doom. You can create autoexec.cfg and put +mouselook in it, or whatever the command is. Id wanted people to configure things themselves because there were too many systems to support, and there were NO standards. That's why Carmack liked GL. I get that it's jank, but you were meant to DIY, and no standards existed until half life. Half life wasn't super amazing besides creating the standard for all modern PC games. It wasn't graphically amazing, it was amazing for setting the bar. The cool thing about quake though was you could transfer your autoconfig to any quake game.

Man, it took me years to build up five Win98SE PCs with soundblaster cards having the CH flight stick ports to play X Wing. Sorting through boxes and boxes of old stuff, testing parts, tracking down AGP graphics card drivers to the edge of the known internet!!....to my surprise, a little P2 750 with just 256mb ram runs X Wing the best out of all the other 4 higher spec Win 98s.

Then GeForce continued to be a scam sold solely on tech demos. GeForce FX Dawn demo, card CAN'T run dx9 at acceptable FPS. You needed a Radeon to run real next gen games. These days, just don't have the room, 3dfx in DOSBOX works great and Unreal is actually darn good on Steam compared to a 3dfx card. This is extremely cool! I just wish it would be able to have a faster cpu clock frequency. I still might have to get one, maybe playing at 480p with a CRT or a Retrotink 4k would allow for good enough performance. I'm a bit spoiled as I used to have a Win 98 System with 700mhz and a Voodoo 5 as a kid. It would still not be able to play all games fluidly, I remember the game Giants was a slideshow at some points.

Also for anyone wondering, according to the Vogons forum for this it looks like the ATI Radeon 9200 or 9250 is the best 3D GPU and the Voodoo 2 is the best DOS GPU due to the bottleneck of the CPU. Although the Voodoo 3 our dude here is using could be a good compromise between DOS and 3D. They have not been able to get any NVIDIA cards to play nice.

The Radeon is the best and the cheapest but IMO lacks that 3DFX Glide charm
@jimkincaidz
@jimkincaidz 2 күн бұрын
@VideoGameEsoterica yeah exactly, that's why the Voodoo still has a place. They said the bottleneck makes a Voodoo 3 overkill though. But the 3 could give you an otherwise missing boost on Windows 98 that the 2 might be lacking. I don't think it hurts to have too much power as long as the feature sets are there

This looks really cool, building a Retro Mini PC is really difficult with old hardware, ATX is really your only option and then there is likely the need for replacing old failing capacitors and paying a premium on the parts themselves. This might have already been said, but I bet your frame drops are more as a result of CPU and not the Voodoo 3. You'd mentioned the board is running around 500MHz but, in my experience, the V3 should scale well up to between 1.5 and 2GHz. You could confirm by running a Quake II timedemo at different resolutions and see where you start getting significantly lower frame rates. If they stay pretty static, it's CPU bound. If they drop off at higher res, GPU. I run my primary V3/3k on an Athlon XP @2GHz and FPS show a pretty linear drop as a raise resolution. My 2 cents anyway.

I really want one of these, not available to buy yet sadly, will get one asap, I'd bang a Yamaha DB60XG wavetable module on it (Roland SC-55 level module but better), picking a GPU is a little tricky as the AGP isn't a proper AGP slot afaik, it's actually a 66Mhz converted PCI to AGP 1X wired slot, which is why only GPU's with PCI variants work, so I'd probably go for a ATI Radeon 9100, which is just about the most powerful GPU it will support, ATi Radeon DirectX 8.1 cards had better rendering quality than Nvidia GeForce DirectX 8.1 cards, they also have really good custom Omega drivers, with some nice image quality & performance options, higher FPS and rock solid support for older games, making it the perfect choice perhaps. Though I'd love to stick a 3DFX, especially one that can do 3DFX super sampling (RGSS), still the highest rendering image quality for early Windows 98 games, RGSS spanks Nvidia, ATi (though they had really nice IQ) and PowerVR, even Matrox, those super clean crispy 3D graphics look so darn good on a nice CRT monitor with 32-Bit colour, whether it 480p for the scanlines, or 1200p for the higher fidelity (the arcade cabs of the time used RGSS with multiple 3DFX chips for those way ahead of their time rendering quality & graphics), the FPS will suffer at 1200p on a Voodoo, probs best to stay under 720p (1080x720p for 4:3 CRTs), 3DFX Voodoo cards are pricey now days, so that 9100 might be the better choice, will have much higher FPS for later Win98 games, despite the lack of RGSS, will still look superb, ATi standard AA implementation was pretty good tbf (their SSAA tanked FPS), either way, super-sampling is a great way to get the most fidelity from classic 3D games on PC.

You can still put together a workstation using original boards/memory/CPU for pretty cheap. Socket 370 p3's are very affordable with stable boards

I am a lover of "Trophy Bass" games but it is impossible to install the original Trophy Bass 1 and 2 on DX and EX processors. It always ends up crashing the system. You need to find a RIP version.

It's really really neat but woof, that $300 price tag is definitely very steep and I'm having a hard time justifying it especially since I have several retro PCs already + so many other ways to play retro PC games on modern systems, I just don't see the value prop in that high price tag, unfortunately.

VGE, you must remember the custom CPU on that llama board only simulates a 233 MHz Intel Pentium CPU. It's not really 500 MHz like it would be back then.

But all this stuff is already playable under emulation. And very expensive too. Looks like a toy that will end up on the e-waste piles once it has spent the obligatory time in the closets and cupboards gathering dust.

I like this but not sure about buying it after what the Vogons community has done to the MT32-Pi project developer, essentially bullying the guy into giving up working on it. Dont really want to support these people and their projects.

RetroDreams is not affailated with VOGONS in any capacity, and I'll personally donate money to Dale from the sales of the RPi0 that we had through RetroDreams to reward him for his work.

The Pixel X86 is an unauthorized copy of the TinyLlama2, if you would like something similar in form, I suggest waiting for the TinyLlama3 which will contain PicoGUS and a 3dfx chip, Eivind is working on getting it done this year! :)

I miss the 90s retro gaming era so much. No woke agenda's or creating a title for a fast cash grab, just pure creation taking it to the limit of the hardware avail at the time. Wish I knew more about this project months ago. Looks like they'll be sold out a good while until batch 3. Could you link us to the the wait list page if still avail? Just says sold out. Edit - NM found the discord.

I enjoy all types of games, retro and modern. Although I don't believe anyone could argue the industry has recenlty been used to push propaganda that has no place in gaming. You shoulld spend more time playing more of your favorite modern games like Dragon Age failguard rather than picking fights with strangers you know nothing about and wouldn't dare have the courage to speak with anywhere else but online.
