In WW2 My Dad was flight officer . Entailing flying and numerous other jobs but always tons of paper work . Forms , Letters , Reports . When being transferred from place to place , they would issue him a type writer that had been beat up by the person before him . He finally got fed up with that and bought himself a Royal type writer that stayed with him and no one else could touch ..... Ha ! A testament to their robust build is that he used to let me and my sister play with it when we were little and my sister lets her grandchildren play with it now . It still works just fine ....... Now that's a type writer ........ !!! ..... :D

It's wonderful to see how happy you are about your "new" typewriter. I feel the same way about my now four machines, from different manufacturers: from 1917, 1925, 1940 and 1958. As often as possible, I write (at least) small notes or small private letters to have the nice feeling of being able to write with an old typewriter. - I find your idea of writing a diary with a typewriter inspiring. Maybe I'll start with that?

I remember at typing college…back in late 80s…here in London, we used to learn via tapes..wearing headphones. starting on these older machines… The PAIN coming home, of little fingers throbbing…(like a cartoon) as I always missed, fingers going in between keys…….SORE little fingers…😫..😫

You can't beat a Royal for a solid machine! If you want to find some original spools, I'd suggest you get in touch with Matt at ACE TYPEWRITER here in Portland, Oregon. Matt's dad started the shop in 1961, he's a great guy and super helpful. And while you are on the phone with him, I'll bet he can trouble shoot that bell. A truly resourceful person like yourself could fix that with a little instruction. Good luck with your machine! Thanks for sharing it!

I remember using a typewriter like that in the late 1960s in high school and when I started undergrad in 1972. It was likely from the 1940s when my parents were in college. Your typewriter is a nice anachronistic item. I have been an attorney for about 41 years, and have used fountain pens almost exclusively the last 25. Over that length of time I’ve accumulated an ungodly number a fountain pens. I typically have six inked at home on my desk and six linked up on my desk at work. I have no idea why theKZbin algorithm popped up your channel, but I subscribed and I find it interesting.

Sir, may I know your favourite brand of fountain pens? I am just curious to know as I too own about a hundred fountain pens, some rare and vintage pieces. I am 71. I love books, pens and typewriters, mostly old vintage staff.

Anachronistic! No so at all. It's as much a part of today's life as the computer. Well, at least for a big bunch of writers out there, myself included. But I seem to accumulate fountain pens with remarkable ease. I sold one hundred and fifty-three very nice ones early last year, and already have fifty new ones to add to those I didn't sell.

@@Jaffar540 My favorite brand is probably Pilot Namiki Vanishing Point. I always have two inked at home and office in blue and some other dark color and one in red ink. Red for editing and the dark ink for note taking. I also like Pelikan and my signing pens when I sign my name is usually a Pelikan with a broad nib. I also have a massive collection of Esterbrook desk pens and desk pen sets from the 1940’s to 1960’s which are displayed on shelves in my office.

There’s something oddly comforting about the sound of a classic typewriter; I don’t know why! Here’s a little hint I’ve discovered: on machines with a very quiet bell, I just sorta LISTEN for the bell when I approach the end of the line, and then I can magically here it. (When I don’t actively listen, I often miss it.) Have fun!
@someonespadre
@someonespadre Жыл бұрын
Picked up one like it, S/N dates it to 1938. Bought it as non-op but somehow accidentally fixed it and now it works. When I type the bell kind of has a resonant ringing. My touch lever is missing, maybe it annoyed a past user. Desk chair…look for an antique Gunlocke or Sykes butt bucket chair, solid wood, surprisingly comfortable. Way better than the cheap modern junk.

Hey Alicia- I have a 1940 Quiet DeLuxe, very similar to yours. I watched the video closely looking for details and whatnot, and in particular watched you fidget with the margins and tabs. My machine has . . . pause for a little dramatic music . . . 'Magic Margins'. Royal played them up in advertisements as the latest and greatest newest best thing. There's a little lever at the top of the left side of the carriage that sets margins to wherever the current position currently is. Does yours have such a thing? Your model might be earlier than mine, before the upgrade (Royal QDL 2.0). By the way, you can get manuals (original, reprints, and/or reproductions) for just about any model from various online resources for little or no cost. Enjoy your new acquisition. Collectors gotta collect. Good luck.

What a beauty. I think a type writer would be a lot of fun. Aside from work, I have never done any writing on a word processor. I find the temptation to hit select all delete too tempting. There’s something good about a type writer or pen that means you can’t hit backspace (you can scrunch it up and throw it in the bin). Once you’ve hit the key or put pen to paper, you’ve committed yourself. Yeah, it’s such a tactile, tangible experience. Writing on a word processor is like skimming across water.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that typewriter! I have learned how to type in high school back in 1966. Yes, I am that old. I own a Royal Caravan that was a present from my parents back in 1966 and still looks and works like new. Still has the same new smell. I own a Royal Aristocrat, a Royal KMM (got that from an antique store for free) needed ribbon so I replace that. Just got a Olympia SM4 on eBay by the original owner which is like new. I still type, love typewriters, love typing and yes, I own a computer but don’t do facebook, twitter or anything like that. I type letters and call people on the phone. Yes I still have a house phone. Love the video, your enthusiasm for typewriters and not for nothing but you are adorable & CUTE!

Looks like a rather cool 1930s Royal portable. Very stylish!! Take care of it and it will take care of you! I have a 1949 Royal Arrow Portable typewriter I call “Daddy Sam,” that while a not as fancy-looking as this one, he is a machine of great distinction-and has a very interesting backstory: My girlfriend and I were shopping at an antique store, and we found him: Daddy Sam. There was just something about this old typer so I got him, cleaned him up, fixed him up, put in a ribbon, and did some typing-very good touch and print. About a week later, my girlfriend and I were rifling through her late father’s old desk, and found a slip of paper dating to the early 1950s. It was a receipt for a Royal portable typewriter-a Royal to be exact-its cost and its serial number. I thought it would be a lark to check it against my newest purchase. When I did, my jaw dropped clean to the floor-both serial numbers were IDENTICAL!! That typewriter I bought in the antique shop was once HIS!!! My girlfriend couldn’t believe it either. Since his first name was Sam, and since he was my girlfriend’s late father, I named his typewriter after him-Daddy Sam. I still have him. I even used him to type the transfer papers when I bought my last vehicle-a pickup truck, since her father was a car dealer in life. I’ll never sell that machine..

This video popped into my feed from the KZbin algorithm. But the sound of that typewriter takes me back. I started my career as a typewriter mechanic back in1982. I worked on the new at the time, electronic ones, but the old boys in the workshop still repaired the manual and electrics. Who would have thought back then, that after the best part of 40 years as an electronics engineer, I’d be watching a video on KZbin of a typewriter. Course all we ever typed was, the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dogs back, because it uses every letter of the alphabet.

Have you ever seen the DVD "California Typewriter?" It's a fascinating look at a shop in California owned by a man who repairs, reconditions, and sells typewriters, as well as artists who "repurpose" typewriter parts. Also, I have a buddy who collects them; he doesn't use them, he is just fascinated by the way they look and the way they function. Off subject. This regards "the rain in Spain" remarks regarding a different video. I re-watched a scene in "My Fair Lady" with Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn. The line, "The rain in Spain stays mainly IN the plain" is how it was SUNG, but in the celebratory discussion after ward, it was "...mainly ON the plain." So both ways are correct. I know you'll be comforted by that :-)

For starters, you look beyond ecstatic about your latest acquisition. As you described it, it reminded me more and more of the typewriter we got for our daughter a few years ago. Sure enough, when I looked it up we got her a Royal Quiet De Luxe from the 1940s. It also came with a handsome carrying case. Lee had asked for one for her 15th birthday and I remember her carrying it around and setting up shop at a local coffee shop and just typing away. She's a fantastic writer and it was a real joy watching her type away. I wish you many years of enjoyment with your typewriter and look forward to hearing about your adventures in Flagstaff!

I once used to typewrite a lot. I’m good at it and I quite love it. And somehow I’ve always liked old things and things that require attention and care. Since quite foolishly, and inexcusably losing the two beautiful vintage portable typewriters we had at home when relocating to a different city very many years ago, I lost touch with the typewriter. But never quite forgot its charms and utility to me. Such a sweet thrill to see this. It was first you and then WaskiSquirrel who inspired me to seek out a typewriter again, when you both made videos showing your other wonderful typewriters. I bought my own soon afterwards. I now have two typewriters that I use every now and then. A classic Hermès and an old Olympia machine - both manual machines which I prefer and is what I’ll only ever use. But well restored and fully working typewriters from reputed retailers are invariably so expensive. Not unlike restored, desired vintage fountain pens, actually even more so. Watching you type with such skill and genuine joy on your new, pretty typewriter just made my day. Seriously. So, thanks for showing and sharing.

You are really lucky to own this wonderful vintage typewriter which was once the most sought-after machine during the 1950s and 1960s.I own a similar one in olive green which I bought from a retired school teacher. It comes with glass keys. This particular brand only needs servicing once every three or four years if taken good care of, according to a professional repairer who was employed by Ben Meyer who was the official agent for the German-made Olympia typewriters in Singapore. He passed on three years ago.

Hi, I have been watching your videos for some time now, yesterday I watched your video and I was a little worry about you, but I do hope you are recovering well…You are such of a beautiful person. Before coming across your videos, I thought I would be the only youngish person enjoying still writing with fountain pens…I do have a small collection (6 or 8) of Mont Blancs, Watermans, Schaeffers and Parkers (made in France, not the US) and you made me curious about Japanese pens. Hope that you are recovering well, I was very glad to see you in today’s video. For some reason you give out an European vibe…You are a great human being, and I imagined that you were an American somewhere in the countryside of France or Italy, living in a cottage…not Arizona. I love vintage typewriters!!! I have a Remington probably from the teens or early '20s. It is not fully functional; I need to find someone who repairs typewriters in the San Diego area ... maybe even a drive to LA could bring feasible. Congratulations on your lovely acquisition!!! I am quite envious!! ENJOY!!!! :D Warmly, Susanne :)

Where do you find replacement ribbons for these? Are they all standard size? I had an old early 1900s Underwood growing up…can still remember the smell of it and the ink!- (I’m old! Lol!-) Enjoy!!!

Alicia, I so enjoy your presentations on these typewriters you find. Would it be possible to show case them as a group and discussion of the pros and cons of each one? Would you consider taking us on a field trip to your place of business to show the different typewriters? I learned how to type on a heavy Smith Corona at the techical college many years ago and had so much fun learning how to use a typewriter. I would like to find a small portable typewriter with a case of my own and occasionally see them in antique shops but not real sure what to look for. Thanks in advance Xx

Woww! What a new jewel! 😍 I really love your typewriters. You own a very nice collection. 👍🏻 Which one/s do you like most and why?
@adventuredenali
@adventuredenali 2 жыл бұрын
Oh gosh, that’s a hard question to answer! It may be easier to say which one I use least: Olympia SM3. It’s a beautiful machine, so well built and I love the look of the keys. However, it’s the heaviest machine I own, and requires a heavy hand too for typing that ends up leaving me a bit spent after a long writing session. My favorite has been the Rheinmetall, I like the size, color and the ease of it. But now there’s this one… and I have no idea where she’ll end up in the line of favorites!

It's a beautiful machine. I'm currently working on restoring a 1920s Smith-Corona typewriter. The cleaning is a little difficult. These things have so many moving parts! A real mechanical challenge! I wonder how these machines will fit into my regular writing life? And your idea of a bedroom desk is a great one. I wonder if I can do something similar?
@adventuredenali
@adventuredenali 2 жыл бұрын
Oh gosh, have fun with that! I hope we get to see some of it over on your channel. There’s so many moving parts, it’s incredible. But I love how easy it is to follow a line and see how it works and reacts. Have fun with your project. It’s nice to have a designated space, makes it easy to just sit down and start typing whenever inspired. You’ll have to share some ideas if you start incorporating these machines more into your writing!

Love the typewriter! I noticed that you only used one piece of paper. While In my typing class in highschool, I was taught to always use two pieces of paper when typing. Not really sure why …maybe to protect the keys. Cushioning the strike a bit. Very much enjoy your show!

Hello and thank you so much for your support and comment! I use an iPhone 11 Pro Max for filming and editing (iMovie). The tripod is an articulated arm that can be mounted to the desk, something like this: www.amazon.com/Articulating-Baking-Crafting-Videos-Streaming/dp/B07B93ZJYM/ref=asc_df_B07B93ZJYM/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309775237395&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=6211941578037255675&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9030237&hvtargid=pla-568536217142&psc=1 I have a little mic that inserts into my phone, although I don’t always use it. It doesn’t do a whole lot, however, it cuts down background noise somewhat and that can be really nice, especially if it’s windy outside. Microphone: www.saramonicusa.com/products/smartmic
