Looks like a TB Turbo kit that’s been fitted to your tractor, made in Lancaster Lancashire with most parts including castings made by them in house apart from the turbocharger itself which will more than likely be a Holset made in Huddersfield Yorkshire. One of the other options was an Opico as mentioned by someone, they used an American made Roosamaster turbocharger.

Good evening Dan. Nice dependable tractor, and easy to maintain.

Good video Dan 👍 have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the years I drove a 698 with Opico turbo it powered a Claas Jaguar 62 precision chop forager and did all the ploughing with Dowdeswell DP8 four furrow reversible as the DP8 was a hydraulic reset it was putting the lift capacity to its limits🙄💪💪👍

Thank you for the video Dan, I rather replace a water pump on a tractor than fixing a space heater or as I call it a bomb, I think Wile Coyote was the last owner. 🤔👍

We had a 698 and bought a 699 later dad always recons the 698 without a turbo went as well as the 699 without a turbo. But the original 698 does have a 5.2 litre 4 cylinder engine so pretty big by 4 cylinder standards!

I had a 698t. They are a really good powerful tractor for its size . My big complaint is the body work as most 600 owners will tell you they are made of Swiss cheese 😅😊😂.

I've heard of the ghosts that haunts the 318 Perkins but I operated a 1080 in the early 80s had no problems only thing I didn't like was the multi power transmissions and after that I had a 298 who's hydraulics were a nightmare then several 285s those I loved I'm still hoping to get a 285 or maybe a 699 if whichever comes first at a reasonable price

Perkins A4 318. I’m amazed that it has lasted this long. It is probably the worse engine ever made by Perkins, even in its later, modified form which the 698 should have. Best thing MF ever did was to dump that engine and use the 236T engine instead.
@malcolm89386 ай бұрын
Not sure if it's luck or treatment or combination of but some people talk of having had 1080, 595, 298, 698 for years with no trouble and some wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. A chap we knew had one with opico turbo on for years and the engine was never any bother and he wasn't even mechanically inclined.

Had one here and it was a cracking engine,pulled well and started a dream,shame the cab just melted away before our eyes.
@hedydd26 ай бұрын
@@rescuecow90 The engine was great, when it worked. It had an exceptionally high head gasket failure rate and many early ones had poorly calibrated and timed injector pumps. What came over MF and Perkins ever to actually officially offer the Opico Turbo kit for the 595 and A4 318 engine we shall never know.

Your 698 looks miles better than ours😆🤦♂. Didn’t even realise there was a bonnet catch, I have to take ours off! Nice little job done though 👍 she even sounds different with an exhaust on 😆

Hi Dan, have you sent your serial number of the 1200 to Massey Dave for his survey? So the Perkins 318, was it in the 595’s and 1080’s also?
@CowfarmerDan6 ай бұрын
The 318 was in the 1080 and 595, they improved it and renamed it the 318.4 and that went into the 298 and 698.

what is the exact difference between the 698 with a turbo and then the 698T? I've heard this argument before but forgot to ask then, because I've heard it a lot as well when people talk about the 699 and 690 as well, but there seems to be differing opinions on it.
@benjaminnewton78626 ай бұрын
698 has the Perkins 4.318 (318 is the cubic inch capacity) and non turbo from standard had a bit of a reputation for poor reliability. 698T had the Perkins 4.236T much newer engine design (would have been brand when in the 698t) and built from factory with a turbo, very well regarded for reliability.
@minkavleren6 ай бұрын
@@benjaminnewton7862 thanks for clearing that up once and for all, that helped a lot 👍🏻 i did try to look up the differences, but all it gave me on that site was the different engine numbers, but not really explaining the "why" of it.

The later 698T also differs from the original 698 by being short wheelbase making it more like the later 690. You can tell by the lower bonnet panels being longer on the lwb version

@@crimsonsunshine264 thanks mate, this is really really helpful information 👍🏻 i have been offered to buy a '84, 698 with a turbo that has to been restored but the guy claims its a 698T which then cannot be the case, and the another guy wants sell his '86, 698T which then would make it a T from what you say but not restored or anything, so i think i might jump on that one instead, but in any case this was really useful and helpful information, thanks again 👍🏻
