A new way to fund health care for the most vulnerable | Andrew Bastawrous

In 2011, eye surgeon and TED Fellow Andrew Bastawrous developed a smartphone app that brings quality eye care to remote communities, helping people avoid losing their sight to curable or preventable conditions. Along the way, he noticed a problem: strict funding regulations meant that he could only operate on people with specific diseases, leaving many others without resources for treatment. In this passionate talk, Bastawrous calls for a new health care funding model that's flexible and ambitious -- to deliver better health to everyone, whatever their needs are.

The best message I get from this is that we shouldn't earmark money but allow the experts to spend it where it makes the most difference. That's why I support paying taxes without looking for every loophole (this is aimed at the rich) and donating to broadbased charities over individual GoFundMe pages. Universal healthcare rocks.

I would need to know more details about how this whole thing would work, to know if it's ultimately a bad idea that sounds good, or if it's actually a good idea through and through. But from this little bit, it seems good.

*Bourgeoi-see* : Are you rich?! Do you want to feel like you're helping poor people that are visually impaired. Well with boirgeoi-see, instead of giving money as a form of charity to fund healthcare needs, you can now give LOANS! And when the poor folks can't pay you back with interest, default them! Yey!

Can someone please help me here? Is the title misleading? I don't get how "getting partners and sponsors" is a "new way to fund" healthcare in poor countries. Am I missing something? Did I not listen carefully? Has he found a magic money tree?

How long can more than half of a third world country live off the generosity of others? Famine, health conditions and other basic life necessities have been gifted there for years. It's just not sustainable. Too hard to change now for sure, and impossible for those in the countries to change. Who could've foreseen a barren wasteland having a provision shortage, and low income families pushing the high fertility leading to further issues.

I hesitate to be honest. This is going to sound verbose by comparison, and it's not directly because of your simple response - but rather the influence of many other recent sources. Maybe we need to just destroy all of mankind and get it over with. Doing it this slow and painful way is hilariously absurd and unnecessarily cruel towards those who are unfavored. The bulk of wealth and resources aren't going to be redistributed willfully to those who need it. Old-folk have already proven that by clutching tightly to their money and power even late into their final years instead of helping the very people who may have brought them to such power and comfort. The few altruists you may find generally won't have the psychopathic edge needed to competitively obtain the resources demanded for the good will they propose - the ones that do have yet to prove they can actually make an impact beyond emotionally gullible consumers. Historically speaking, we're told: anarchy doesn't work, socialism doesn't work, capitalism doesn't work, governments don't work, and altruism doesn't work. Even after several millennia of "good will" education (if any modern religion can be trusted) being so deeply embedded into society and culture, we still have the "starved children" and the "uneducated homeless" and the "abused impoverished." What's proven to work is villainy and selfishness. You can deny nihilism all you want, but tomorrow we'll wage war in the name of peace. So f*ck it all - that's my idea... if you really want my honest perspective.

Medicare sucks so bad, you haven't the clue. Medicare for all SOUNDS like a great idea but in reality it is a degradation of healthcare for the individual. For example, it's been 8 years (8 FUCKING YEARS!) and I'm still waiting on a medicine that has been proven countless times that it helps people like me walk better. If you need a mental health professional then you're just out of luck period, that's an out of pocket expense. So be careful what you wish for cause you'll probaby end up getting fucked. Just sayin.

Lenna Lou I literally get paid for all my medicine, that includes a $300 bottle of adderall. If you aren’t getting insured then that means you make enough money to buy it yourself. Cut back on spending on stuff you don’t really need.
