I have raised 6 kids and I agree that when she does wake up keep the room as dark as possible so she doesn’t think it’s time to be awake. Even though Sarah had the longest feeding in the middle of the night I think it’s great that Derik is willing to take night feedings as well. Not many dads do that so you got you a good one Sarah! Congrats to you both and Jack has such a cute personality I love it!

@@oldbluewitch3386 true, I always just naturally did that with my babies from the moment they were born without realising I was doing it. I didn't realise some people thought it was weird to talk to a baby like they're human until an old lady came up to me at the grocery store and told me I looked crazy talking to my kid about what we were doing. I don't care what it looks like, my kids were early talkers, I'm sure talking to them about everything helped. I'm a vet nurse and I talk to my animal patients too, so maybe I am slightly nuts 😂 I swear it helps the animals stay calm when you tell them what you're doing to them. I'm sure it's the same with babies.

Congratulations!! She’s perfect! My mom is a postpartum doula. I’m in the process of becoming a birth doula and I’ve had three kids this past six years. Don’t know if y’all will see this but in case another new mama does: 1. Lights OFF for night feedings works best. Tiny little low light night light. 2. No chatting with the cutie at night. She’s a person. A small person but a person nonetheless and y’all are interesting. She wants the tea girl 💁🏽‍♀️if you talk, she will listen…and she will stay up to not miss any updates 3. Keep the day loud. She will still sleep through it but learn the difference between that and the quiet night. 4. That swaddle looks loose. Remember she was just smooshed inside of you and designed to be able to pass through a birth canal. I prefer heavy duty swaddles with Velcro and I strap those jelly babies in! Use discernment obviously but tight is right. 5. “Alexa, play brown noise” … all … night … long. My baby’s room sounds like a tundra. She’s one and she thinks she is still in the womb at night. Also brown noise is more tolerable to my husband and my adult ears than white noise which seems to be more grating. 6. She can smell you… more specifically your breast milk so my mom gets better results with her clients who keep the baby on daddy’s side of the room (which I think you’re doing) 7. This one is crucial, if you aren’t already, make sure to hold baby fully upright for 25 minutes after eating. When you lay her flat before that… the gas won’t let her sleep. 8. And for a final bonus, it seems like she’s gassy and there is only one product that works across the board for my mom’a clients including me. Boiron ColicComfort Single use drops. Homeopathic, good for ages 4 weeks and older and E-FFEC-TIVE. Wishing you the best and a blessed postpartum journey and as you know, no matter what, every missed moment of sleep is so worth it cause 😩 gahhh they’re just such a blessing. Sunny and Jack are destined for greatness. God bless your family!

@@AA4PJM Yea there’s a lot that’s seemingly different for sure! But there’s also a lot of similarities with what you mentioned that should definitely be added in for those that don’t know already. Especially skin to skin. I love the Joey Wrap and it made that early bonding super special. These are a lot of the tips my mother gives her postpartum clients because they often do not wish to cosleep and want babies sleeping through the night by 12 weeks. I’m sure that’s not the norm in other places. As she is hired to help them meet their goals and not control their decisions as parents, she uses these tips to get them there. She also watches the babies all night long as a night nurse and doesn’t sleep on the job and sleeps through the day instead. For The tight swaddle I should probably have put my “USE DISCERNMENT” comment in all caps for emphasis considering things get lost in translation over text 🤣but overall, for the mamas here who want sleep these are the tips that help them. Here people often try to avoid the Moro reflex by swaddling tight (enough) so that when baby’s arms lift up, they meet some resistance and don’t keep startling awake with every movement. What’s funny is, though this is the advice I give, I always end up cosleeping anyway and watching everyone around me take this advice and use it while I just sleep in a tundra with babies all over me. But I will say, they’re definitely more rested than I am and their babies are fine. Of course they usually only nurse 6 months to a year while I nurse two years and am aiming to go longer this round. 🤍

The best advice I ever got raising my four kids was to not talk to them during night feeds. No kisses and sweet talks. Yes, it is sooooo hard to do, but eventually they realize there is a difference in day and night feedings. They are like “Oh, they talk and love on me during certain times and don’t during others.” All of my babies slept through the night early on and I think this was a major contributing factor. Both of your babies are precious!

What really helped with my kids to know the difference between day and night was to consistently wake them up every two hours in the day time, instead of just feeding them whenever they wake up. and then at night just letting them sleep until they wake up. Also giving them a bath right before that last feeding in the evening. Keeping them on a schedule so they know what to expect is so important. This made me laugh at a memory with my second child. I knew he was going to have his days and nights mixed up based on his movement in the womb. Sure enough he did and one night he was up, just he and I and I remember even talking to him and saying, “I’m not supposed to talk and get you all stimulated, but you’re just too cute and sweet,” or something along those lines. They’re only little for so long. I had a preemie first so feeding every 2 hours was essential, even to wake her through the night. He actually slept through the night much earlier.

@@michellekuhn2151 So true that they need certain amounts of calories and if they don’t get it during the day, then they will be needing it through the night. Hey y'all!! A little unsolicited advice from a mom of 2 grown up girls and an LPN. You guys are so awesome feeding her when she's fussing!!! I love how you 2 work together. I saw someone mention keeping it darker in the room with little to no noise. I always kept the room dark and the TV on but very low...background noise is important as I'm sure you know. My advice for helping Sunny sleep a little longer: instead of wrapping her in a swaddling blanket use your clothing ie pj's or t-shirts. Also putting clothes that you have already worn for her to lay on in the bassinet. Having your smell close to her will comfort her. It is a trick I learned with my 2nd daughter and it worked...she was amazing to put back to sleep after a feeding. I have passed this along to everyone I came across that had a baby and it worked for them as well. I FEEL your exhaustion!! Thank you for sharing your lives with us. With my nine babies there was so much noise during the day and baby would be sleeping. When everyone was asleep it became too quiet. So I made a tape recording of a normal day(kiddos/kittens/puppies) and turned it on low and put beside the cradle. Took several day/night adjustments but got baby used to the “white noise “ or family noise. Each baby decides their rhythm. Hey guys, I recieved the best advice before our first child was born. I was a younge married mom at 17 (had 3 biological children with my husband). The advice was...from day 1, put your baby down to sleep after they eat while they are still awake and don't brake the cycle. They will fall asleep on their own, sleep for longer periods and more soundly. This is especially hard for first time parents and new grandparents etc. to commit to when everyone wants to hold your baby all the time. Just find the happy medium during the day but keep the cycle at night. Also when they do get up at night only have a small night light on just so you can see to change and feed them. It helps keep them in a sleep/calm state. Babies get their days and nights mixed up very easily. All 3 of my children slept 3 -3 1/2 hours at a time at night between feedings. The best part for tired parents was, they all slept through the night by the time they were 4 weeks old. I or my husband would do their last feeding at 10pm and they would sleep till 7am. It was great especially after having our 2nd baby and his sister was just 2 years older, almost to the day. Our 3rd baby was born 2 years after our 2nd. So our children are almost exactly 2 years apart. This is what worked for us and mite not be ideal for everyone. The second best advise was... don't be quiet around your baby while they are sleeping. This way you won't have to tip toe around hopeing you don't wake them up. It's almost impossible to have everything quiet when you already have another child in the house. I use to run the vacuum in their rooms while they were sleeping. They could sleep through fireworks, thunder etc and still to this day as adults. Well..not like they use to...2 of our children are parents and once you become a parent, you never actually sleep the same again. Lol. Some people use to say it was just my children this worked for and probably wouldn't work for others. But than I became a foster mom. The babies I would foster were only 24-48 hours old and came directly to our home from the hospital. We applied the same advice to all 6 of our foster babies and it worked perfect. All the babies we fostered stayed with us from birth to 8 -14 months old. So it worked on not only my biological children but my foster babies as well. I just want to make something clear. We spent plenty of time cuddling, holding, rocking and loving our children, all 9 of them. Laying them down while they were still awake allowed us the time to spend with our other children. To this day our grown children come over and snuggle next to us and to watch a movie etc. So laying them down while they are still awake wont take away the direct contact they deserve and need. We are so thankful 5 out of the 6 babies we fostered are still in our lives today and we still have the same loving relationship with them. Again this is what worked for our family. Hope this helps other parents. Congratulations on your new daughter, Sunny.

Did you just say by the time they're 4 weeks old you let them sleep all through the night from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. you do know until they're at least 4 or 5 months old you're supposed to feed them every three and a half hours to 3 hours you said you start doing that at 4 weeks old I don't know if you're supposed to do that for my understanding not until they're 4 months they can go 6 to 8 hours through the night but not 4 weeks

Unsolicited advice: my daughter didn't burp, ever. So we did lots of bicycle legs and mylocon drops. She didn't take to binkies. But she absolutely hated swaddling. I slept in the same room with her for 3 days then people told me to put her in her own room (it's 8 steps from mine) and she's slept so solidly from then on (thru the night since 5 mos). You guys are so great and supportive of eachother, it's so wonderful to see. And walking through the first few months like a zombie is totally normal.

Watching this remembering when my girls were tiny. Both my husband and I worked full time at very high energy jobs. I was a corporate sales executive for computers and he was a computer network manager. Fortunately we had a live in nanny who took over at 7 am so we could go to work and at leastone of us was back home by 7 pm.. You are so lucky to have this flexibility to be able to be with them both at this time. It just flies by. I missed so much with working. BTW, you guys are so easy to be "nice" to. Both you and Sarah have a kindness and generosity of your spirit that fosters calm and optimism in a world filled with chaos and self interest. I started watching your channel years ago just because it was like and island of joy and happiness found in simple things like days at the beach and skateboarding with baby Jack. Thank you for sharing your lives with us all. So happy your little family is doing so well.

How precious your family is. I enjoy watching the love and support you give each other. It is a joy to go along with you and spend a long night. I am retired now but worked for ten years in a neonatal unit where I had 4 growing premies and 12 feedings on my night shift along with many other duties. Your video took me right back remembering those shifts. I absolutely love Sunny’s brown locks. She is so adorable. And Jack is getting interested in so many diverse worldly things. It’s fun to see him expand. I agree with other comments to try to keep the room darkened in the wee hours if possible with lamplight. Thanks for bringing all of us into your lives.

I just wanted to say, you sound like you havent forgiven yourself for working when you had your kids. You really should. You were able to have a great nanny for them but not just that, you had to work it's a part of life when you have children cause they are expensive little things. Also if you loved your career then you were teaching your children a lesson in not giving up on what you want in life and not compromising on that. That is a great life lesson! I was very lucky in the fact my sons father didnt want me to work after I had my son, more out of control than niceness! But jokes on him i loved every minute. Yes I would love to have a career and now that my son is 12 and getting his own life it would be amazing to be able to have that to fall back on. He still needs me thank god but he likes to tell me that he has a better social life than I do lol. Cheeky monkey. I bet you still have a great relationship with your children even though you worked. You probably made more of holidays and free time because you wanted to squeeze in so much living with them. I just wanted to say you're a great mom and you like most other moms did your best, that's all any single person can do in this life. Sending love

I think the reason I love to watch you guys is because you are such a nice, sweet couple. I can feel the wholesomeness in how you act, raise your kids and treat each other. Derik is exactly the type of man I wish for my 3 daughters. Sarah is so sweet and gentle, the type of woman I strive to be. You can tell that you put family first, no matter what. Even over your videos, which I understand is important when it is your living. Don't change who you are and keep smiling!

Sunny and Jack are so lucky that both parents do everything they can to help each other in raising and feeding. I had three children and unfortunately it was only me up at all hours every feeding etc. it’s a blessing to see how well y’all work together. Much love from Minnesota 💖💖💖

Bet you were beyond exhausted. That's amazing to think it was like that not too long ago. Thankfully there's a few more dads these days doing their part ❤️

@@mumlee0127 I was but we all survived lol. My 3 are grown up now and my sons will be amazing dads! My daughter has learned from my experience too. She will have a partner who participates in all ways. Happy New Year 🎆

These are the most delicate times for all if you. I think the bonding time in the middle of the night as exhausting as it is, it is rhe best. And although it seems like an eternity. It goes by so quickly. Just look at jack, growing like a weed over night😊

You two are doing great! Im reading all these comments on how wonderful it is that Derek helps with night feedings. My husband did this with our children as well and I think that should be the norm. Go Derek and all dads who are stepping into their role like rockstars!

I'm one of 12 children, 6 girls and 6 boys. Life was a complete whirlwind for my parents. I agree with keeping the room dark and refrain from talking to your gorgeous little cherub ❣️✨️I hope Sarah gets some rest. You are a beautiful little family indeed💝
