Robert Englund was super hung over when he went in for the audition. And was smoking a cigarette in his car wondering how he was gonna get this role. He looked at himself in the rearview mirror and saw his glazed look and got an idea. An old theater treat. Take some cigarette ash and put it under your eye lids. When he was called in, and was asked to say his lines. He just leaned forward and stared at wes craven. They tried to prompt him again but he just stared out of it looking. And wes craven knew immediately, this was Freddy.

Yes, this was Johnny Depp's first movie. If I remember correctly, Wes Craven's (director) daughter saw a photo of him and thought he was cute. That's why they cast him.
@valeriebreidenstein8362
@valeriebreidenstein8362 Күн бұрын
From what I know, Johnny Depp getting casted for the movie was just a coincidence. He accompanied his friend JEH to the auditions, but got casted because the people there liked him and his performance when he got casted. (It's a very similar case to Matthew Lillard's casting for Scream)

You can definitely check out the other ones. Most people's favorites are 1 3 and New Nightmare. Those 3 should definitely be watched. New Nightmare gets very meta like the Scream movies. He actually did both of those around the same time.

Strongly agree on that. third dream warriors is direct continuaiton of original (second one is kinda out there and unrelated) and its great expanding on lore. 4-6 ones are more campy and more comedic, but there is a lot of nice expand on Freddy lore. Than New Nightmare is great finale in completely different style.

3 is probably the high point of the original movies. I don't count new nightmare as part of them because it was more of a soft reboot.
@ConstantineFurman
@ConstantineFurman 2 ай бұрын
@@markcarpenter6020 It's not a reboot. Hard or soft. It's a sequel that doesn't take place within the series' continuity. @Dealric17 "Freddy vs. Jason" is the finale of the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" series, not "New Nightmare."
@markcarpenter6020

@@ConstantineFurman it was a failed soft reboot. The original intention was for movies to follow the Freddy in real world concept but when the movie flipped they went back to the movie world for the next movie.
@ConstantineFurman
@ConstantineFurman 2 ай бұрын
@@markcarpenter6020 No. That is absolutely untrue. Whoever told you that was lying to you. There was no "original intention" like that at all. The movie was a one-off and that's it. It was NOT meant to usher in a new series direction. New Line head Bob Shaye didn't even really like the idea; he only let Wes Craven do it because he felt he "owed" it to Wes to participate in the series again. Hell, Wes Craven didn't even intend to make "New Nightmare"! He originally tried to make a proper 7th movie, but was unable to come up with anything that followed the previous movies, so then he dusted off an old idea he tried to pitch Shaye for the 3rd film back in 1986!

I find it interesting how reactors always question the logic of what the victims do in this movie. They're dreaming, and not everyone follows logic in their dreams. You're using a different part of your mind there.

While the classics were considered frightening (Halloween/Friday 13th), others of these and imitations became less effective as they tried harder. Adding 'comedy' like Elm Street did was smart money. I laughed so hard the first time I saw this and the phone licked her - I'm your boyfriend now! Pure outrageousness.

The whole movie was a dream that Nancy had. Freddy was a product of her dream and nobody was killed basically. The ending was open-ended because New Line Cinema wanted a sequel to this movie. But Wes Craven's original end was Nancy opening the door after waking up in the morning and going off with her friends.

I guess context is big here. In the 80's, there was no concept of crossing dreams and reality. in some way, this movie was a precursor to other "questioning reality" type movies like Donnie Darko, Fight Club, Total recall, Matrix, etc. In that sense, it was extraordinarily unique and creative for the time.

The character of Freddie evolves quite a bit as the series moves forward. A couple of reasons the remake may be more appealing to you and the other younger viewers is that the character is already developed and the writers knew what they wanted him to be. The other is that using CGI lends itself well to creating a crazy dreamworld. In the mid 80’s they couldn’t do that.

Robert Englund went out for lunch during filming, and since it took so long to put him up in the prosthetics, makeup, etc, that he decided just leave it on and go eat. Apparently, there were some foreign tourists in the restaurant who didn’t realize stars would come in wearing their stuff, and he scared the crap out of them. I would have loved to have seen that. Guess that meant the getup was working. Now if he had come in wearing the long arms, and the face ripped off skull face, that would have really gotten them.😂

Fun Fact: This was in fact Johnny Depp's very first movie. And his character gets one of the most memorable, most gursome death scenes. There's lots of jump scares in this one. And most of them still get me no matter how many times I watch this movie. LOL! I highly recommend checking out a couple more of the "Nightmare on Elm Street" films. This was an original concept in the 80's, dreamworld effecting real world, so that was ground breaking. It was typical for the dialogue to be weak (the mom), in campy horror movies on a low budget, but it turns out to be part of the fun. I just recently realized Depp was in this movie, I hadn't seen the movie since the 80's.

You should watch A Nightmare on Elm Street: 3. Dream Warriors, is the best sequel in the saga. A Nightmare on Elm Street 2 is not a bad movie, but it strayed far from the movie's rules. Hi Kamilla ! As I said in my comments from your reaction to the remake, I don't consider it to be a bad movie, I liked it for the ideas it brought, like the micro-naps, that I found purely terrifying considering we're dealing with a murderer that come to kill you in your dreams. But the original is still my favorite of the all franchise. And though many fans didn't like they changed that he was a child murderer to make him a child molester, it is actually what the original script of the original was too, but considering a case of children abuse that happen during the production, they changed it to make him "just" a child murderer Also, though I had seen it many times in 30 years (I had first seen it when I was 9 in 1991). There's a theory that popped up in my mind just a couple years ago, while watching some other reactions to it : The movie is called "A nightmare on elm street", not "nightmareS on elm street". And though we start with Tina seemingly waking up from a nightmare, we then went to the main characters going to school, but introduced by children chanting the rope-song of Freddy... which, as you'll see in the rest of the franchise, is generally an indicator that you are in a dream. So my theory is that all the movie is actually one single big nightmare, which explains all the dream elements happening in what is supposed to be the reality (like the phone call, or Marge's body literally disappearing inside her bed) Hope you'll enjoy your journey through the rest of the franchise, and wonder what would be your ranking of all of them. Especially cause I haven't quite the same than most other fans. And I wonder if yours would be closer to mine or again a totally different one.

Everything is very subjective and depends on each person's tastes. I grew up watching the original movies and I always liked them a lot, however personally I always considered them comedy with a touch of horror. It wasn't until the Remake that I was able to take seriously the character of Freddy where he appears really threatening. Jackie Earle Haley did a great job and managed to make his own version of the character, taking away all the comedy from it. The remake is definitely much better in terms of handling terror.

I own all the nightmare on elm street movies on Blu Ray & seen all of them in theaters & I met Robert Shaye …Right hand man & co-worker to Wes Craven & Heather Langencamp *Nancy*. I say the 1984 til this day still creepy & gives me chills cause it was based on a true story back in the late 70’s…early 80’s. I remember having a dream back when I was 1 years old that til this days freaks me the hell out & yes, I remember til this day. I was in a dark tunnel w/ several lights at the end, but it was hard to see (Both Ways)…But I didn’t knew which side to go, so I pick a side cause I was scared to death & I didn’t knew where was I at & what was even happening, so the moment I was getting close to the end of the tunnel I saw a man with burned skin, fedora hat to the side, dark red long sleeve shirt ripped & burnt, black slacks dirty & black working boots walk out from the side of the tunnel & I was terrified because he looked wickedly off mind you…His eyes was white as like a dead corpse. He then swung his right arm around & I saw his hands was dirty & fingers was carved into knives. I freaked out…turned around & ran the other way but the dream turned slowly & the ground became like mudish / quick sand & he was chasing after me…when he got close to me & was about to slash me with his hand, I woke up & I felt the piercings from my back to my chest…SHARP PAINS to where I woke up screaming & shaking. Mind you, I had that dream in 1983…A Nightmare On Elm Street was released in 1984 ‼️‼️‼️‼️

I didn't 'hate' the remake, but my biggest complaint is that it failed to maintain the aura of mystery. Like you mentioned, it changed some elements, mostly for the the worse, but the things it did keep weren't done as well as the original. Things like coming out of the wall just don't look as good as CGI compared to the practical effects used in the original (if you get a chance, I would recommend looking up some of those practical effects, because they were remarkably inventive). So the remake adopts this darker, more serious tone, loses some of the character of the original series, tries to fill in blanks rather than let your imagination wander. It introduces the idea of micro-sleep, but doesn't take advantage of it; it introduces the idea that maybe Freddy was innocent, but doesn't take advantage of it; it reframes him from a child killer to a pedophile, which begs the question why he's murdering the kids instead of the parents. I think if the remake had committed harder and leaned into its new ideas we would have gotten a better movie. Instead it can't seem to decide if it wants to recreate the campy horror of the original or be something new and sinister.

My only problem with the remake was that the kids accepted that they were all dreaming of the same guy and if they died in the dream, they died in real life WAY too quickly. It's such a bizarre premise that no one should immediately jump to. I really liked Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy.

Jeh was not the reason that a nightmare on elm street 2010 failed. IMO the reason it failed was a few actors phoning it in, too many kills similar to the original, and people may not have liked the direction they took for Freddy’s origin story

I wouldn't recommend all 7 of the original franchise (or 8 if you count Freddy vs Jason). The best are this one, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and Wes Craven's New Nightmare. They're the three Wes Craven was involved with, and the three starring Heather Langenkamp.

Hi Kamilla!😊 There are actually 7 films in the original Nightmare on Elm Street series. Eight if you count "Freddy vs. Jason" (2003). You probably missed the last two films because they are not numbered like the other sequels. Through all these films Robert Englund has amassed a large following as the original Freddy Krueger. Most people that grew up with the films are still Englund fans. Jackie Earle Haley makes a fine Freddy, but he cannot beat the original IMO. You might feel different if you watch all the films eventually. Great reactions to the original Nightmare, Kamilla!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏

I know this is off topic but I hope you decide to show some of your reactions to Star Wars the clone wars. I'd really like to see some of those reactions.

Kamilla, I believe johnny Depp was your age when he made this movie. The acting, some of the cast this was their first actual movie, other's were known for basically being in "B Movie"s". I like this one better, I thought the remake was inconsistent in the story line. and was confused, the original clearly High School students. In the remake I would swear that one actor looked like he was 30'sh so I was not sure if they were college students, or just young adults.

If you haven't watched Friday 13th should check out it. Their is a cross over called Freddy vs Jason that has one of the most realistic spins on franchise dealing with horror elements. It becomes campy at the end but the premise is actually really great.

I knew you were gonna say you liked the other one better because you watched it first. I have seen that happen many times with people. The 1984 Elm Street got a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, and the 2010 Elm Street got a 14% on Rotten Tomatoes. But we like what we like for whatever reason it may be.

There's a really good reason why the remake didn't get a sequel 🤔
@valeriebreidenstein8362

The biggest part about the cancelling of the sequel were those NOES purists, that hated on the movie, just because it was JEH instead of Robert Englund who played Freddy. Also Roony Mara didn't want to be in the Remake, because she hated acting in horror movies, so they wouldn't have had their "lead" character anymore. There is actually something that's knida like a sequel to that movie and that comes in the form of the character lore we get for Quentin and Freddy in the horror survival game Dead by Daylight (produced by BHVR interactive). And that would have made a cool movie. They should let BHVR write a script for a sequel to the Remake or for the Remake itself. But even that wouldn't have satisfied any of those people that hate on media, just because it's different actors than the OGs.

The original is probably the best of the series but #3: Dream Warriors is my favorite because it's the most fun. #2 is pretty awful. The remake I thought could have been really good but it suffered from what a lot of those mid 2000s horror movies suffered from -overproduction. Jackie Earl Haley does a solid job but I just didn't find it scary. Which is why I think I like the original so much, it was done on a dime so the practical effects are jarring and creepy and the synth soundtrack really adds to the feel. You're right, the acting is pretty awful but it has this grindhouse feel that just makes it really creepy. Great reaction!

you seem a little confused... tina was dreaming.. when was the last time you could consciously decide what you did in a dream? so tina aint dumb, she is just having a nightmare.. what nancy did later on was basically lucid dreaming.. the fact that she was aware those are dream let her control them partially...
