I'm with you on loving the way long-form stories are able to explore ideas from multiple angles. Wano's themes of identity are some of my favorites in manga. I love that many characters get a lot of mask symbolism along with that, Hiyori, Kiku, Sanji, even Katakuri and Pudding the arc prior, to represent how they feel trapped by the expectations of others/themselves, donning a mask to attempt to lock away their humanity for others. Sanji is terrified that he can only be useful to Luffy if he becomes someone who rejects what Zeff taught him, and becomes the mask permanently. Robin and Brook taking over for him against Black Maria is so sweet, which is a good contrast to how all the other samurai stood back while Kiku fought Kanjuro alone. Like Sanji, Kiku forces herself to rely on a mask/fabricated personality, "Kikunojo of the Lingering Snow," though doesn't have someone backing her up to let her know her humanity isn't a burden, as Sanji did.

For me, the longer the story, the better. Doctor Who has been going on for sixty years now (even if I’ve only really watched the show from 2005 onward) and given me so much to say with (as you put it) individual characters contributing to collective themes. Written nearly 40,000 words on the shows Individual characters and its themes.

I love long term stories. Time plus investment means it sticks with you more and it means more even if it's not necessarily as quality as a shorter tighter work. Also things like a character reveal who is only mentioned in passing feel like it properly exists in that world. A shorter work a character is mentioned and shows up in short order but a longer work so much time goes by that you can take it as read. Maybe that's just me as I've gotten older story contrivances take me out even if it's properly done and just a side effect of fiction being fiction. Hear the name madara and 10 years pass before he actually shows up in the story.

Great video, Crafts! This'll just be a nitpick, but I disagree with your point about Lucci not having bonds with his comrades. We do see Lucci's comrades protect him in the next cover story, and even in Egghead, we do ask him ask the Gorosei to spare Kaku. And this point might end up being wrong later on, but it is heavily implied that Lucci probably did manage to save Stussy and lied to the WG that she was dead. Though like you mentioned in this video, and in your previous Usopp video, there is meaning in the fact that Luffy has a bond with Usopp, and hot it contrasts Spandam's dynamic with Lucci.

I look more forward to these analysis videos than actual episodes of One Piece.

I am disappointed by 24 minutes. Thank you for all the hard work that went into the video, I don’t want to undermine your achievement… but only 24 minutes is disappointing.
