Honstly i dislike character development Because for one it defeats the entire purpose of being yourself Like sure let the character learn new things and what not but dont change there personality and beliefs And 2 . If you change their personality or beliefs completely or just in general then what's the point of the character in the first place? It's like creating a new character entirely... And lastly number 3 when characters be them selfs pepole can relate too them when they get too know them better as a character

Kousei had no one to help him heal and just hurt him more both emotionally and physically and he was just a doormat. The Kawamoto's took in Rei and gave him the love he needed, and he ALLOWED himself to heal because of the kindess and warmth they showed him.

Thank you for the tirade on tirade. I've always liked ft but as the majority discourse is that its trash I hid behind the veil of irony. It has its flaws but its emotional heart still resonates with me and your journey through this has made me appreciate it while coming to terms with disingenuous hate it gets.

Your take on maximalism in manga is very weird imo, just because people don't like stories that go on endlessly like One Piece they should stop reading manga and go to "a fucking art museum" instead if they want well-paced stories? Extremely dismissive to an unusual degree coming from you, when you also defend axed manga or praise shorter works in general

I dont think I can look at that bleach song in the beginning as neutral anymore. Was played when Mayuri did some, how shall i put it, weird things to Nemu.

You described exactly what I couldn't when it comes to how abysmal your lie in april handles abuse and just how Kousei lacks any agency throughout the show and the authors conclusion to Kousei's trauma is never but a plot point.

Having read/watched both up to date, I didn’t realize how many universal themes were represented in every character. I only watched for entertainment, the fights and cool powers, not the ideas the mangaka was trying to spread/the story’s meaning/to understand.

Dealing with a wide range of topics is pretty much the core strength of long-form storytelling. It's the perfect opportunity to express an overarching idea of a story more cohesively. You mentioned this subject in your "The Fated Losers of Naruto" video, so it's great to see that part expanded upon. The main difficulty with long-form stories might be that there is a higher risk of the work ending up disjointed depending on whether how it answers certain thematic questions throughout its arcs appears contradictory. Every part could work in isolation and be interesting in its own right, but I think that incentivizes discussions related to quality rather than content.

Long term stories really are great to accompany throughout the publishing, it's nice to read it all at once for finished stories but having read a story as it is published and seeing something talked about almost 10 years ago and checking segments related to it to speculate on how it'll develop is just an experience you can't get if you're reading the whole thing at once.

Great video, Crafts! This'll just be a nitpick, but I disagree with your point about Lucci not having bonds with his comrades. We do see Lucci's comrades protect him in the next cover story, and even in Egghead, we do ask him ask the Gorosei to spare Kaku. And this point might end up being wrong later on, but it is heavily implied that Lucci probably did manage to save Stussy and lied to the WG that she was dead. Though like you mentioned in this video, and in your previous Usopp video, there is meaning in the fact that Luffy has a bond with Usopp, and hot it contrasts Spandam's dynamic with Lucci.

For me, the longer the story, the better. Doctor Who has been going on for sixty years now (even if I’ve only really watched the show from 2005 onward) and given me so much to say with (as you put it) individual characters contributing to collective themes. Written nearly 40,000 words on the shows Individual characters and its themes.

I love long term stories. Time plus investment means it sticks with you more and it means more even if it's not necessarily as quality as a shorter tighter work. Also things like a character reveal who is only mentioned in passing feel like it properly exists in that world. A shorter work a character is mentioned and shows up in short order but a longer work so much time goes by that you can take it as read. Maybe that's just me as I've gotten older story contrivances take me out even if it's properly done and just a side effect of fiction being fiction. Hear the name madara and 10 years pass before he actually shows up in the story.

I'm with you on loving the way long-form stories are able to explore ideas from multiple angles. Wano's themes of identity are some of my favorites in manga. I love that many characters get a lot of mask symbolism along with that, Hiyori, Kiku, Sanji, even Katakuri and Pudding the arc prior, to represent how they feel trapped by the expectations of others/themselves, donning a mask to attempt to lock away their humanity for others. Sanji is terrified that he can only be useful to Luffy if he becomes someone who rejects what Zeff taught him, and becomes the mask permanently. Robin and Brook taking over for him against Black Maria is so sweet, which is a good contrast to how all the other samurai stood back while Kiku fought Kanjuro alone. Like Sanji, Kiku forces herself to rely on a mask/fabricated personality, "Kikunojo of the Lingering Snow," though doesn't have someone backing her up to let her know her humanity isn't a burden, as Sanji did.

The problem with fanservice in anime is that, even though the character who is a pervert is punished, the viewer is not. It is shown to them to get them aroused. Most anime is porn, plain and simple.
