For most of its history, Crownsville state hospital was the only hospital in Maryland treating Black patients, but the conditions in Crownsville made it more likely patients would die there than go home. In Antonia Hylton’s new book “Madness: Race and Insanity in a Jim Crow Asylum,” she tells the story of Crownsville, and how race and science intertwined to dictate Black mental health in America.

Ali, I love your program. Thank you for centering diverse voices and always spotlighting banned books. As a writer and reader, this is a tremendously important topic. It’s also a troubling indicator of our culture. I look forward to reading Antonia’s book! Ordering today. ❤️

You can go back to the beginning of the country. Homeless discrimination berms goin on for what seems like ever. If only people understood how horrible mental patients have been and still are being discriminated against. It’s eye opening. If you don’t know your history, check into it.

I have never been a person to watch the news over the last decade, although I do read the newspaper. But I've been watching MSNBC for the last couple of weeks, and oh my God it seems like all that network does is spread hate, and I've noticed Fox News isn't any better. I guess for MSNBC and Fox News. Thank God for the first amendment. I truly miss the days when news networks were less political.

Greetings. Are you able to cite specific instances of MSNBC spewing hate? I watch the network regularly, have for at least a decade, and I've no recollection of their spewing hate. I don't always agree with their positions, but I've yet to observe hate being spewed. Is it possible that we don't share the definition of hate? I defer to Websters, how about you? I can't comment on Fox. I haven't watched a second of their programming since 2011. When you've a moment, enlighten me about MSNBC spewing hate. Thanks, Patriot.

When I was in school a very long time ago in Dade County, Florida, neighborhoods were mostly segregated, by tradition rather than by law. Pupils mostly went to the school closest to their homes. In colleges, there was more mixing of races, and students kept their opinions to themselves.

We still mix races, only black and brown people can have an opinion now. Yellow and white gotta shut up, functional brain cells are an unfair advantage.

"Tradition"? How naive are you? That wasn't tradition. Neighborhoods were mostly segregated because of racism and not wanting to rent or sell homes to those of a different color, fearing it would decrease the property value of their home and neighborhoods. "Kept their opinions to themselves." OMG! What a lovely little bubble you lived in a very long time ago in Dade County, FL.
