Holy shit! Big same! I’m from South Jersey but my dad worked in Trenton and always got the Star Ledger; he saw the contest and cut it out for me. The gimmick was since you’ve mastered the NES, try to win their “next generation” system by answering NES trivia questions - the NES questions were therefore about facts from when you conquered certain games. I remember I had to guess on a few, too, like the question: at the end of Double Dragon when you rescue Marion, what side of the room was the plant on. (That game was hard as balls and I didn’t beat it until years later in college.) I later saw another promotion in the Courier Post for a free TurboGrafx game with proof of purchase, and I wrote them a letter saying I got the system but didn’t exactly purchase it. They must have been feeling generous so they still sent me a free game! Great memories.

It is great to see Pat's success over the years and we can't blame him at all for expanding his creativity into avenues other than the Punk. But in genre of playing a character who reviews games, this and a few of his other holiday videos are my favorite ones. Pat somehow was able to tap into that joy and happiness of being a kid at Christmas at that period of history and bringing it to life for us as adults, even if just for a few moments. Thanks buddy

About the jacket being adult size: You have to remember that we all loved to wear ridiculously over-sized jackets and sweaters and things back in 1989 and 1990 days. If they were early teens, like maybe 14 or so, they would be almost full grown anyway, so it's fully believable that the jacket would be that size.

TurboGrafx 16 was an interesting system, a friend gave me hers back around 2003 .. I had it for a couple years, collected some games for it on ebay and then sold it. The hu-cards were cool and some of the games were nuts! so many sprites moving around on the screen at once it was insane! We used to have the console, but it’s not working anymore. The TurboGrafx 16 was released in 1989 by NEC and Hudson Soft, and it was the first and only 16-Bit console before the Sega Genesis came in. It has a decent library of games, and many of the games are not too bad for its time. This was also the same company that now makes digital cinema projectors which were used in movie theaters which were also made by NEC where it replaced the traditional 35mm movie projectors, the most expensive movie projectors ever exist and they were beasts.
@NightWolve752 жыл бұрын
Similar to your story, I also won a TurboGrafx-16 contest [Turbo Titans] off a Chicago Sun Times Sunday paper (August 19, 1990) by answering 5 NES related questions! But, this is the fun part: unlike your parents telling you a UPS package arrived, my mom intercepted it, wrapped it in gift wrap...and gave it to me on Christmas day! I knew something was off the moment I saw it as she never bought me any gifts THAT big! I was pretty pissed she did something so weird! But anyway, I caught up with you once on Facebook to share the story because I saw your post on the PCEngine-FX forums and I've been looking for info on these 1990 contests which were sponsored by NEC (and Data East given the Bloody Wolf pack-in). Too bad it's lost to time for us history buffs.
@bryonmiller432610 жыл бұрын
Holy crap! I never Knew PC Engine had Street Fighter 2 CE. I just watched a youtube video, it's damn near a perfect arcade port, this would have been a game changer if NEC knew how to market in the US AND had SF2, at the time, this would have been THE killer app for a game system. This is a missed opportunity, what a shame.
@ravagingwolverine10 жыл бұрын
You're right, it's a great port for the PCE, though the music loses something in the transition. That's why I can't agree when people like Pat say it's way better than the Genesis version. The Genesis version has its own issues, but the music sounds similar in many ways to the arcade due to having a similar sound chip. The music in a game like that matters a lot to me. I don't think it would have been the game changer some think it would. SF2 The World Warrior was the big seller and was SNES exclusive. Many of the people who wanted to play SF2 got that system before other versions came out in 1993. SF2 Turbo sold very well but less, while the Genesis game sold well, but not nearly as much. Plus, exclusivity agreements may have been an issue.
@crimsontide19803 жыл бұрын
@@ravagingwolverine I think SF2 Turbo Edition was one of my favorite SF ports although it wasn't a carbon copy of the arcade,it was at least a pretty good effort. Championship Edition on the Genesis was a pretty damn good port, and honestly I preferred the Sega 6 button to the SNES controller, but visually Turbo Edition looked much cleaner and a larger palate of colors
@ravagingwolverine3 жыл бұрын
@@crimsontide1980 They're all good ports, in my opinion(some say otherwise), with each having unique advantages and disadvantages. I can understand preferring any of them. SF2 Turbo on SNES is actually the one I had back in the day. Some of the sound in that one annoys me, much more than the scratchy voices in the Genesis. But that's just me. And, yes, the Genesis one naturally has less color, but I never thought it looked bad. But as I said, all three versions, Genesis, SNES, and PC Engine turned out pretty well.
@crimsontide19803 жыл бұрын
@@ravagingwolverine very well said, cannot argue with that!
@avenuePad2 жыл бұрын
I'll give points to the Genny for the music, for sure. Not that the music sounded terrible on the PCE or SNES, but the Genny had the FM synthesis. It wasn't as powerful, so sometimes the FM synth didn't translate well on some games compared to chiptunes on the PCE and SNES. Overall, though, the Genny port of SFII falls short compared to the SNES and PCE ports in the graphics and colour departments. They're all great ports when you consider the era. Any one of them impressed.
