I think it means that pain and trauma are the origin of many of our self-defense mechanisms. "Putting up walls" as it's usually said. However, ultimately that pain and trauma becomes a very heavy burden to carry throughout life. So, instead of turning our pain and trauma into a heavy stone wall, we should turn them into feathers, to wear everyday and show that they are a part of us, but light and not weighing us down.

We got a preview of this gorgeous song at a concert when they came to our city. It was fucking amazing, literally the best show I've been to, they sound just as good in person and they played a bit of everything. I've been fortunate enough to experience them live after every studio album release thus far (including the very night Mer de Noms was released, opening for Nine Inch Nails). This album was a long time coming, and totally worth the wait. I can safely say that A Perfect Circle is unquestionably one of my favorite bands of all time.
