This was Soundgardens breakout song. To me, Soundgarden and Alice In Chains were the best bands to come out of Seattle.

G W I'm a huge fan of Soundgarden but Chris Cornell was basically Metal Robert Plant. No one else sounded like Layne Staley. And as for AIC's songs not holding up, I reply like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJTSkJ6ebd19etU

The only reason Soundgarden is even labeled as “grunge” is because their from Seattle. They were a metal/prog band with their complicated time and time changes. Runs circles around all grunge bands

YES... We old school Metalheads love Chris Cornel. He not only had an amazing vocal tone, he also had amazing voice control, intonation, vibrato, and huge lungs. He could hold a note forever and then do a killer vocal lick at the very end when most pro singers would be gasping for air. Plus, his music & lyric writing was stellar. He wrote very honest lyrics. Those Seattle guys were all great at putting their real feelings in their lyrics. They weren't afraid to be vulnerable cause they knew that true art requires true emotions.

+ Andy Wood, actually the reason the Seattle scene actually happened. Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns or Stargazer created a gateway for Pearl Jam to exist after Andy got a bad batch, ushered in Soundgarden, allowed Alice In Chains to enter the fray as members, and created Temple of the Dog and Pearl Jam - which would have never existed if Andy hadn’t got a bad batch. F heroine!

Guys, seeing this a year later, but to your point about Chris’ soulful voice. One of the defining “rock n’ roll” moments of my youth was a coffee house at our local high school when I was maybe 13. My friends band played this and they got a black kidnamed Jesse who was a Metco kids (got bussed in from Boston to our school in the suburbs) to sing, and man he had some pipes! Sounded just like Cornell and they killed it. I’ll never forget it.

Alice In Chains - Would? [please] Really enjoy your videos! It is interesting to see how you two come at all of these tunes I grew up listening to as a teen and as a young man...When I hear "outshined" I always think---"I've got nothing left to give" or "no more shine left in me"; so it was cool to here how you guys reflected on it. You also managed to pick out a few of the lyrics I don't think I'd ever really noticed all these years---the part where he says "I can't get any lower but still I feel I'm sinking". So thanks for that! On a side note, this tune in particular always felt very personal to me because I grew up in southern California my self, but both of my parents were from the iron range in Minnesota. When I hear that line, "I'm looking California and feeling Minnesota" I hear "I look alright, but I'm feeling cold" Anyway, that's my two-cents worth.

7/4 time "Outshined" was performed in drop D tuning. This song is in the key of D major. The verses are in , an unorthodox meter, common of some Soundgarden songs, such as "Spoonman", which is in 7/4, "Fell on Black Days", which is in 6/4, and "My Wave", which is in 5/4.

I think Ryan is referring to the rock/hard rock/metal usage of what is called 'power chords'. They'll often be played in sequence, as a melody, to form a riffs like in this song. More technical explanation if you guys are interested in it: in acoustic or cleaner guitar styles you'll usually form chords with all or almost all strings and you'll tend to focus on mixing many different kinds of notes to get the 'coloration' of the chord - that is - minor, major, diminished, maj7th, etc... With heavier distortion the complicated chords are harder to distinguish and sound messy because they have too many different notes and overtones (some guitarists get away with it but it's harder) and so heavier rock guitar styles started focusing on single note sequences and chords with only 2 different notes, the tonic and the 5th, which is the bare minimum you can get away with and still call a chord. This development brought some unique characteristics to the style: * the power chord shape is very simple and easy move around the guitar neck, so it's often played in succession and with fast tempos * The A power chord (also written A5) is composed by the notes (A, E) . The chords for A major and A minor are composed by the notes (A, C#, E) and (A, C, E) respectively. This means that the power chord notes are present both the major (usually happy sounding) and the minor (usually sad sounding) chords, but it leaves out the 3rd which is the note that would give it it's coloration. This means that power chords are easier to play together and one after another because there's less musical information that can clash with each other. * It's so easy moving the power chord shape around that bands will often just play every note as a power chords for a fuller sound. A melody of B - D - D - E - E will often be played as B5 - D5 - D5 - E5 - E5 . In summary, this is a rock guitar kind of technique. This kind of riff is used heavily (pun intended) by most metal bands and was the signature sound of Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath, he was the absolute master of the riff.

Absolutely, the dropped tuning makes a huge difference. It becomes even easier to do power chords all over the neck and you get the extra lower notes on the guitar.

I'm glad you brothas like the sound. I was first introduced to the Seattle sound back in the early 90's while stationed at Ft. Lewis WA just south of Seattle while in the US Army. I actually got to be on a security team for the Seattle bands at that time. The music was very soulful-one of the first things I noticed. Second, the deep blues that was present in the vocals was amazing. Chris Cornel and Eddie Vedder voices had that soulful lingering affect that I love. To be a part of the scenes in the back and meeting the band members gave me a new perspective on rock, but this type of rock was different than the "hair bands" type of rock. Every rock era was in a way rebellious of the previous rock era, but when this grunge sound hit, it came out of left field and blinded everybody. I listened to some rock music back then, but the grunge sound hit me because of the soulfulness of it, it wasnt just a bunch of screaming into a mic, it had a flow to it. What's crazy to me was that everyone of these guys I talked to had been mesmerized by the likes of Robert Johnson, Jimmie Hendrix and Bo Diddley. Yep, they held those three as "Rock Gods". It is very important to note that Bo Diddley is nicknamed "THE ORIGINATOR", the first to transition "Blues" into the new sound called "Rock". I felt great that they were actually praising these two African Americans and attributed their love of rock because of Johnson, Hendrix and Diddley. Made me feel special as an African American man. I am so happy that I was there behind the scenes, up close and personal, in witnessing this grunge take hold of the world, while also destroying the big hair bands...lol. Keep doing what you do, love the show.......Peace

Soundgarden does an amazing cover of Smokestack Lightning by Howlin' Wolf, that really showcases Cornell's voice and the way he captures blues and soul. Also Fopp by Ohio Players is a brilliant cover of a funk song. I highly recommend both. Slaves and Bulldozers on the Badmotorfinger album is my most favoring Soundgarden song. I think it shows off Cornells vocal range, and transitions from slow, calm and collected, to outright rage, anger. . .and soulful singing to how well he screams and wails.

Anthony Sipes well actually Chris did all the songs on Temple of the dog as he was singer for that supergroup and wrote their songs together with Mike, Stone and Jeff from PJ and Matt from SG. As a matter of fact Temple of the dog was recorded to honour Andrew Woods, close friend of Chris and singer from Mother Love Bone a Seattle band Mike, Stone and Jeff were part of before Pearl Jam was born. That record is huge for any PJ, SG or Mother Love Bone fan and Eddie Vedder vocals on Hunger Strike are just the cherry on top of this sweet/sour 90's Seattle Rock story.

One of y'alls best reactions yet and i've watched about a hundred of them! Soul in a singers voice is translatable across genres. it doesn't matter what type of music you perform, if it touches people it's good.
