I've been waiting for this one! I've always struggled with the music aspect when making game-related things, but I'll definitely have to have a look into this stuff. The difference in how much control you have in the MiniLab definitely seems worth it in comparison to just using your keyboard. I've not heard of Arturia before but it's really interesting to listen to you walk through it all, I might have to invest in one of these myself

Awesome! I really hope I've shown well enough that really, making your own music is the best and cheapest way to add sound to animations and games

Yeah for sure! Really good lil video showing it all off. I can't wait to see how it all affects the mood in your final game.

While a midi keyboard can be really nice to have, you can get very far without one as well. Most of the stuff that the knobs and sliders do, and key sensitivity, can be done within whatever DAW you are working with as well. Especially if you aren't that proficient at playing piano, you'll likely end up having to go in to the pianoroll to quantize and edit manually anyway. But it's definitely a fun thing to play around with, no doubt about that :)

Well yeah I covered it, the speed of iterating and searching for melodies is so much faster with actual keys. It lets you actually get better results. But I made music without a controller before, and it was great, too

I was a huge fan of your videos back in the day, now im not that much into painting but really started to get into music production, and I also use ableton live and that exact same midi keyboard, and I love them both, great quality and amazing for workflow, def. can recommend!!!

It's nice that more people get to make sounds and music, but i'd like to say that there are many musicians and sound designers that would love to make stuff for your games. Again, not trying to discourage anyone from doing music yourself, but as a musician myself i know there's a lot of people out there eager to help

That first synth thing you tried earlier in the video sounded just like the synth in that one song from 'the strokes' called 'at the door'... great song

I’d love to have this. But I suck at music so idk if I’d get my moneys worth… do you edit your voice audio in post (like amplify, noise reduction etc.)?

Oh yeah, I have a pretty loud laptop next to me, so denoising, then compression for more even volume when I move my head around + some EQ to make my voice less unbearable

Just get a DAW you like (i think FL is a good starting point) and just learn the basics first, both for music and the DAW. If you still enjoy it, then consider to purchase a midi controller :)

@BoroCG 36:50 you might try to set a different VELOCITY CURVE in the Arturia MIDI CONTROL CENTER. The MK3 allows different settings for Keys and Pads. ☝💡😉
@RutabagaSwe

I suppose they could have changed it for the MK3, but for the MK2 the velocity curve only affects the keys, not the pads. Unfortunately.

sorry, hate's a strong word. i just think instead of people making their own mediocre music (there's more to music than having things be easy and convenient in an app), there are a lot of great musicians that would love the work--and why not preserve some aspect of collaboration, going into the future. not everyone can or should want to do everything themselves on their projects--despite a belief that that's where we're headed.@@BoroCG

I see. You totally make sense, but I don't think any approach has to be the only one. I know what I want to see and hear, so I'm doing it myself. Collab doesn't always work for me, and don't forget that indies don't have the money to hire people. Like, I don't have any resources for that. And free stuff means you get what you get - the length, the composition etc.

and it's also just fun doing stuff yourself and learning new skills. why not let people just do that and enjoy their own creative process? and nobody is saying, that people should want to do everything themselves. this is not harming anyone
