The problem with satire is if ppl don't recognize it as satire, instead of mocking the subject, you've promoted the subject (re: Fight Club, Full Metal Jacket, Starship Troopers). I don't blame the author/director, but it is something to be careful about.

I've heard conflicting statements about Thraka being named after Thatcher. Andy Chambers has said repeatedly when asked that the named emerged from he and his friends roleplaying orcs from Lord of The Rings in the 80's. Of course this could just be him dodging the question, but I think its been long enough that if Thraka was named to mock Thatcher, whatever backlash Chambers or Games Workshop could face would be minimal at best.

Im a molecular biologist, and i have good education, am able, but once a guy pulled a gun on me, and yelled at me asking me to go back to Mexico, till a white lady talked him down , this was a week after jan 6th. Yes, I had a class, education, and able bodied privilege, but that didn't preclude me from experiencing racism, harm and alienation. Am I still better off than in certain ways compared to the kids in the farming town I used to visit, yes. But also none of those kids would get a gun pulled on them because they "looked" suspicious. That is the point.

You are not better... More productive member of society or perhaps less harmful societal member sure. But just because you behave in a manner they may not doesn't make you better... It makes you a little more of a better neighbor but doesn't make you better. A lot of the people in your town may have little options to advance once they understand what life is about. Heck there are people who don't get their heads on straight until mid thirties but does that mean that they were a worse person at 25... No. It just means they weren't at the level of understanding that some rise to in shorter time spans. Heck I see men in their sixties that dont understand how to conduct themselves in a manner cohesive to their fellow man and I would have been considered more responsible or socially aware before I was 10. Yet I'm 31 unemployed although I dedicated so much to education before education started for myself. I could read small books before I was in pre school, and read at an eleventh grade level in 2nd grade. At the same age i could calculate square roots at age 6, I dedicated myself to my education but because of two teachers lost motivation to try because they were insulted by my need to be correct and display my knowledge and really treated me poorly for having a broader knowledge base than they did. I smoked a little pot in my youth but I liked school. I liked learning and could score the highest grades in any class if they actually cared about retention of knowledge. But because homework was ,70 percent of the grade and I hated redundant homework that didn't help myself once I already completed 10% of it because I knew the material I'd stop doing homework. I'd get Ds and nearly Fs in classes but I'd know the material better than anyone in the class... It's be... Anyway I'm 31 unemployed and I'm just a minor amount of legal trouble due to arguments with my parents recently. Having lived at their house after many setbacks financially am I a worse person because I've turned to drugs after a life of working my ass off to be a model class citizen yet have never made more than minimum wage? No. I could discuss scientific or mathematical principles with experts in their field and not miss a beat. I'd still have as coherent of understanding how to behave as a citizen if I'm high as a kite, whereas a police officer that's sober has less emotional control than I while on drugs or moderately drunk. Once I'm too drunk I do start to act up a bit but no more than anyone else would when they are sober... Anyway my point in this is nobody is better than anyone dude. Some people are not as great as others because they are indecent. But that's their actions. Your actions don't make you better than your fellow citizens however your fellow citizens can be people who are not as great or decent or even terrible members of society. But at any point I believe they can come to an understanding of their wrongs and thereby be as good as someone else. And that's the key we are only as good as others not better. We can be more harmful or more uncooperative, but we can't be superior to anyone at any point because no matter what we are just humans trying to live and let live. The ones who don't follow that second portion are the ones who lower themselves to being harmful to others, but being productive and wanting to should be normal not raised above as superior.

@ezekielduran4386 12 сағат бұрын
@@uwc Well that's my fault then. I'm very literal and that's an error in my rush to critique something I am personally adamant about. You see I myself am half Mexican/Hispanic or Native American. My father and his family spoke Spanish in the home in southern Colorado and that side of my family shares culture/customs of Latin American, but our ancestors were allowed to stay in Colorado and be Americans whenever the land was forfeited by Mexico following their military surrender to the USA and the border moved to near where it is today. But although they spoke Spanish in the home my father is extremely fluent and proficient in both languages as are his siblings. But the point of my saying this is that compared to my mother's Caucasian side of my family I'm much closer with my father's side due to sheer distance as well as the moral behaviors of one another. My mother has siblings who always looked down upon her and my father and still do in many ways and aren't as caring or sympathetic nor generous as my father's side of the family who are no where near what would be considered the American ideal. Yet it's baffling as to why for myself. They care... They are more considerate and charitable although they aren't as financially well equipped to be charitable. They have had legal troubles sure from that Machismo culture but in adulthood they have all adapted and been just as normal and as passionate an American citizen as the "White" or "Real American" side of my family. It's absurd that race is still this major issue when there are people like myself who don't even consider a person's race. Since I was young there have been family reunions that I attended where you would see people who could have the look of someone who was white black brown or even some who looked oriental. I had two people who looked completely different that would tuck me into bed at night and the same goes for the two brothers I shared the house with. I have two half brothers from my father that are full Hispanic in their bloodline and yet one of them whiter than my half white dark skinned brother. Race was never something I saw. My youngest childhood friend was last name of gomez until his father went to prison and he went to his mother's name which was Buchanan although she's Filipino. And I live in an area very deprived of any social diversity so it was either white or Hispanic people. I remember one time in Denver a bum was asking for money at a McDonald's I was entering and I said sorry I don't have cash I only have my debit card which was a fact. He followed me inside and asked if I was being racist which was stupid as hell because I exited my fathers truck with my father and although the bum was "black" my dad's skin tone was nearly identical to his... How did he not see us walking in together? Or is it only racist when you are doing it against their race? Which begs another critical issue I have to address... If there were any race war, all sides would be leary of me and I'd have no side! I look too white to be one of the Mexicans yet I'd not side with the oppressors side in any conflict. And it would most definitely be white caucasian people who would be the ones oppressing others in this country, because it is that way. So if that were to occur I'd be the most likely candidate to not even survive a day... It's so absurd when you look at the face of it. Europeans colonized the globe and now their lineage and future progeny are in a state where they say how can you blame us for helping others? It's not helping when you look at what was done objectively for hundreds of years and is still ongoing today. The video is key on something that is totally contradictory in nature yet occurs in the real world. People who want to keep others beneath themselves call out actions they themselves are guilty of doing and when it's their actions they try justification through completely non logical reasoning. It's a headache and a life ache to be honest. It's something that brings much conflict to me internally and in society. I have people come up to me and say those damn Mexicans this or that without understanding that they are speaking with someone who is half Mexican by every metric except that my Mexican ancestors never left Mexico. Mexico left them and so my great and even great great parents who had grandparents that were Mexican were not themselves Mexican because the boundaries we arbitrarily use to distinguish one set of people from another changed. Sorry I rant a lot on this issue because it's something I'm torn up on from the inside, as well as pressured into beliefs on the outside, that I'll never align with strictly due to where I was born and the way my fellow neighbors look at the world. It's an internal war for some and that's where many don't get it. Everyone else wants to be against others whereas I'm forced to be against myself or another party when I shouldn't have to be against anyone!

1:40 I disagree. I think the difference is between acute violence and sustained violence. We're fine with several people being killed in wars that last for years, but we shy away or feel guilty for approving of one person getting killed. (This also applies to systemic violence as it is sustained.) It also creates a kind of cognitive dissonance for most people, as we're taught killing people is bad, but when someone really bad or representative of a bad system gets killed, we don't feel like it's particularly wrong.
@TJ-vo3rv
@TJ-vo3rv Күн бұрын
Bit of both I think. I'd also argue that our monkey-brains like to latch on to cause-and-effect relations; it is easy to know who to blame when we see someone shoot another person on camera. Guy A killed Guy B. But when the perpetrator is a vague, expansive system operated and steered by myriad disconnected individuals...it is a lot harder to point a finger for grandma dying when she didn't get her medication approved by insurance. In those instances, it is a lot easier to just go with "it is what it is," rather than tackle the monumental task of figuring out that whole...mess, more-or-less.

"You're only getting celebrated because you are Black/a woman. Not because you actually accomplished something" In short, math itself is not racist. By now, people on the left/liberal side must have produced hundreds of videos, podcasts, articles, and books explaining concepts like white privilege, gender identity, and intersectionality in the simplest terms possible, but PragerU ignores all of it. They don't try to refute these arguments; they just ignore them and pretend to be surprised and outraged by the absurdity of their own hyperbolic versions of those ideas. But I guess I can't blame them -- It's much easier to win an argument when you get to create both sides of the debate.

If anything, being in the spotlight has meant driving out some of the worst elements (GW making "you will not be missed" statements, anti-harassment rules for events, femstodes, etc). And more people mean that it's easier to find groups (whether online or IRL) where I don't have to wonder whether the dude who likes to joke about purging the xenos really wishes he could do the same to the migrants next door. In the past "social awkwardness" was used as a shield to deflect against criticism of crappy beliefs/behaviors, and it's good that that doesn't fly anymore.

@sparklemotion42 I'm not against new people coming in. In a lot of my experience, new people were coming in because they wanted to overcome their social awkwardness and build friendships with people who also liked to nerd out about pushing plastic toy soldiers across a table. Lore conversations could be really complex and nuanced. It seemed like there was an influx of people who... bought into the in-game imperial propaganda unironically. To be fair, I dipped out around mid 9th because it was getting to me. Maybe it's getting better, and all gaming groups are highly local, so your group mileage may vary. I do still talk to some of my buddies from the gaming scene pretty regularly, and getting into more niche games helps.

Hey Michael, I think it's worth doing a deep dive on the role of violence in society using the framework of Johan Galtung's definitions of direct (war, murder, etc.), structural (systems to harm and cause suffering) and cultural violence (attitudes and values that justify violence.) You touched on it a bit about how people fail to conceptualize structural violence as violence because there are bureaucratic degrees of separation. It could be helpful for people who are reconciling the contradiction of celebrating murder and empathizing with the plight of the working class. I personally think we should avoid viewing violence as a solution, but rather a symptom, and it's worth investigating the root causes of the symptoms, or they will only persist or exacerbate. Especially if resistance is met with violent suppression or retribution from the established order.

The tragedy of 40K is that many people seem to not realise that its satire. The 40K community genuinely has/had a significant problem with openly racist/fascist or even nazi fans unironically praising the imperium. GW had to multiple times directly adress the controversy. I remember the fallout around the black ultramarine or more recently the female custodes. In both cases there was legitimate criticism about how GW handled the rollout but that was drowned out and conflated by the overwhelming tidal wave of racism or misogynism. Arguably making the imperium more inclusive runs counter to how horrifying it is supposed to be but certain vocal minorities in the real life fan base can be horrifying enough.

I support Wisecrack and enjoy their videos, but Michael how have you NOT heard that math is eurocentric and supports white supremacy? A google search quickly shows examples - for example, while not a part of Ontarios Ministry of Education, the president of the Ontario Mathematics Coordinators Association, did a presentation where they showed a slide giving examples of white supremacy in math education including "of course math is neutral, because 2+2=4". It may not be widespread, it may not be super serious, and it absolutely is out of context - but it is something that exists

I've been reading Jacques Berlinerblau's How to Be Secular, and I understand secularism as a political philosophy that maintains social order and protects nonreligious AND religious thought (though not always it's expression if it's at odds with the law, which should not be endorsing the establishment of any religion). I wouldn't describe The Imperium of Man (from what I know, at least) as secular. Atheism does not equate to secularism, although many hardline atheists touting secularism as shield against religion may make secularism appear as if it were antithetical to religion, although it is not. Good book so far.

Right - most global north nations today are secular, in that they mostly don't care what faith you have. Older Imperium would be comparable to the USSR during its various anti-clerical periods, in which the state very much cares what faith you have and it had better be "-". The term I've generally heard for that sort of state is "state atheism" which, you know, yeah, that's a pretty cut and dry accurate description.

I’ve consumed warhammer lore for a long time now but I’ve gotten into the tabletop recently and it seems like a lot of the community is very resistant to change, and still complain about the model size which was changed years ago. I think it’s interesting wondering how many people think warhammer is cool because of the authoritarian imperium and the xenophobic super soldiers alone. I think the lore is amazing as long as you remember the world is awful and should be a warning to us but you can still enjoy it in the moment, I just hope most of the community understands it as well. All this being said in person the warhammer community is friendly and accepting like few hobbys are and I’m glad to be a part of it, again online trolls infect online communities but oh well.

Comparing protests to riots is a serious problem, to equate them is destructive. The idea that such violence would be awarded with a symbol of peace could be used satirically to point out a problem with glorying violence, so I would say it was satire, not the funniest, but I see the message.

I remember the thing about Michelle Obama🙋🏻‍♀️ Ok so she was in a store shopping and a short white woman needed help getting something (I think it was laundry detergent) from a high shelf. The woman saw Michelle and that she was tall and ask for some help. Michelle was very gracious and helped the woman and went on with her shopping. Later the news asked the woman did she know that she had just asked the First Lady for help and this poor woman was dumb struck and like “wait who did you say that was. Oh dear I didn’t recognize her I just saw that she was tall and I needed help getting the thing from the tall shelf🫢.” Now some tried to spin this as a race thing because the WHITE woman felt entitled to help from the nearest BLACK woman and didn’t even really look at her face and notice that she was the First Lady. This is not what the random woman ment to do and it wasn’t how Michelle Obama took it either. They were random strangers helping out their fellow creatures. Hope that answers your question.

The Babylon Bee was funny when the satire was pointed at their own audience. They were a Christian joke site that made fun of Christians, their pop culture, celebrities, etc. It was niche, but it made fun of everyone in the community. It wasn't one side taking pock shots at the other. There wasn't an agenda to it. The articles were shared around and debated for their points among their audience. It's not the same Bee as it was then because its owned by someone else.

I just finished watching season 2 of Squid Game, and without spoilers, I'd say the shift in thought from the good of the collective to the good of the individual, and what that's doing to us, as well as our apathy towards systemic violence, are the biggest things it makes a comment on.

The humor segment is really interesting, because on one hand he says that no one should fact-check anything he says, because it's all jokes and goofs. On the other hand, he immediately follows that up by saying that satire and humor is a "vehicle for truth-delivery" (awkward phrasing, but okay), which obviously implies that all of his jokes aren't actually jokes. You're not joking, nor satirizing, if you're just telling the truth. So which is it? Should they be free to satirize whatever they want, or are they not actually doing satire, because everything they say is actually meant to be taken as fact?

Violence is the illegal use of force. Force can kill it does not make it violence. Most people do not die because of violence or force but lack of ressourcesin the form of care, food or treatment. This in essence has nothing to do with violence. Lack or ressources and use of force are both in the domain of consequences and ethics, but are not synonymous.

It occurs to me that very often when egregious acts of denying healthcare coverage to people hits the news, the insurance company rolls their decision back for that individual case and goes basically "oops mistakes happen." This kind of PR correction makes it very difficult for people to see the health insurance industry as committing systematic violence. Of course, there are countless instances that never make the news, and are never corrected. I don't think we as a society are okay with systematic violence, but it's deliberately hidden from our view and made to confuse us. Likewise when the state commits violence, it's accompanied by massive propaganda campaigns.
