I feel like I've seen this phone before... oh yes, that's because it's already in my pocket in the form of a Zenfone 7. Bummer, but there is a reason why I love me some Zenfones and even if it's not upgraded the way I hoped this year, I'm probably still going to use it. I love me that flippy dippy.

Wait a minute. So this phone uses the same camera sensors from last year but has no OIS? That sounds like the original ASUS Zenfone 7, because I read the 7 Pro had OIS on the main and telephoto. I wonder why ASUS went with that approach o.o... I will say the 8 looks like a better deal considering many consumers would want a powerful phone that isn't bigger than the norm these days.

Honestly, the 8 is easily my favourite phone this year so far. I just wish Asus made that camera module sit systematically at the corner, with uniform spacing. The module looks like Asus forgot there's supposed to be a camera and just stuck one at the last moment. Also, OCD. Other than that, the phone rocks. Love it. Its been more than a year and I'm still using the Asus Zenfone 6 (the first gen flip camera phone by Asus) and I gotta say I accidentally dropped my phone a lot of times and even had it in my pocket in a thunderstorm rainy condition and the flip camera mechanism still works perfectly fine. Being a photographer it is really very practical to just swivel the camera at any desired angle to take a complex shot from the angles that are difficult or maybe even sometimes impossible to reach with non flip camera phone. I was scared before I bought Zenfone 6 that I might end up breaking the flip camera mechanism but it turned out to be the best mobile/camera investment I've made in my life. Also the ultra wide selfies or even ultra wide front camera videos for vlogging that is not possible through other devices. My phone is a bigger and better flex even in front of iPhone 12 and other expensive devices. It's not just something that I can flex around but something that is too much practical for real life conditions. The 5000mAh battery lasts for more than a day for me. I'm so used to the flip camera that I can't even imagine to shift to any other phone that doesn't have a flip camera mechanism. Lot of y'all might not interest in buying a phone that has a moving part but after all the adventures that I've been able to shoot through the ultra wide front camera, I cannot live without it 😵. I once even went parasailing high in the sky with my phone in my hand recording literally everything with the front ultra wide camera. flip camera is a necessity for me now.

I intentionally prevented it from closing a few times. Dropped it many times on that couch, sometimes from too short a distance for full retraction so it slammed it home. I would love to see a phone review that reviews... well... you know... the phone. How is the handset speaker, speakerphone, reception with low signal, microphone, noise-canceling in the various talk mode, how well the blu-tooth works with a headset (one used on all test phones for consistency) with the phone in pocket, bag, or at a distance. I know you very briefly touched on handset speaker, but call me old fashion. I think a phone should first be a strong phone. The rest of the things are nice and useful. But if it has a bad antenna or is otherwise annoying to make and receive calls with then that ruins the point.

I just feel like it's asus spending the least amount possible to get the largest return it can. There are compelling features, like getting the 888 at this price, but wasn't there a supply issue with the flip pro last year? I feel like asus knew the number of units it was able to produce would sell out and so it did not need to include features that would have compelled fringe buyers to purchase this phone. This phone will still attract budget oriented consumers as well as those who want a smaller, but still powerful, android phone.

They had the golden opportunity to create the ultimate front screen feeling that everyone is chasing. Uniform bezels with no camera interference! But they just had to have a bottom bezel :( It makes the phone so so much less premium, and makes it look like just any other phone from the last 3 years, minus front camera. Imagine this with the Iphone or pixel 5 uniform bezels!

The Zenfone 8 is a winner for me, minimalistic design, no flashy back colors, just a solid compact phone with top specs. Ordered mine already :p

Headphone jack and shortcut button? Sounds like an excellent replacement to my Note 9 in a year or two, just gotta hope ASUS actually upgrades the next one without removing the jack

Thank you Michael, as always, I watched YOUR review before all others, but for once I would say "We the Viewers" aren't as lucky as you, being able to try all these devices "in the hand"! VALUE can be important, since all the $1000+ flagships, and their cameras, may be out of reach, so €599 sounds like a good deal for an 888 model, with case AND charger, as an EveryDayCarry, especially with some of the other benefits you reveal. You are STILL THE MAN, so I'll let you off 😉 Please mention to David @theUnlockr we now need to see his all day battery test! 🙂

This is for sure going to be my next phone. A Compact flagship that's lightweight with SD888, IP68, Just 2 meaningful cameras with OIS, good stereo speakers and a 3.5 mm jack. No fancy gimmicks and a decent price. Good job Asus.

I would prefer a small bezel over a notch/holepunch anyday. you get an uninterupted viewing experience, you can have the notch and the chin match, since unless you have an iphone, the screen has to have a slight chin, and videos are much better without a hole in the content, and having to play slightly to the left or right so you aren't constantly touching the camera

Hey important question, the flip came out awhile back, but only an international version, so it wasn't very smart to pick it up in our markets. Did they re release it for American markets? And if so are they 5g capable?

I want that Zenfone. I hate notches with a passion, and never intend to use a phone with a notch for my daily driver. They just mess with the display when I don’t want a camera there anyway; I don’t mind using the back camera. So this phone is perfect. And I want it. Thank you ASUS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, no phone has me as excited since about the last 10 years. The understated exterior is one of the best designs I have ever seen. Everything is highly functional. All those stand out features you pay so dearly in other flagships and never use have been left out. If it was just a little smaller, had a microSD card and removable battery, this would be the device of my dreams. As nothing comes close, this will suffice and replace my Galaxy A3.

@@TheMrMobile oh yeah, right. Good old Dyson sphere lol I'm not really one for MMORPGs, but they revisit that spot and it becomes a very important part of the story of Star Trek Online. I've enjoyed watching videos going thru the story of STO; you may as well if you aren't familiar with it. It's kinda cool where they go with it all, especially since they can do all sortsa shit in a video game that they never could on a show & even probably a movie.
