As an LAX based pilot, this was a really well done video. Everything was accurate. I tell people LAX is possibly the best airport in the world for the pilots, and possibly the worst for passengers. For pilots, the weather is consistent, and the procedures very easy and predictable, and despite its size, significant ATC delays are unusual. For the passengers however it is a nightmare to drive to, parking is expensive, the terminals are not easy to walk between, the terminals are too small with not enough seating or food options, and the security areas are generally too small with very long lines

I spent 24 years of my ATC career working LA TRACON. It was the most fun I had working airplanes. I got to work the busiest hour LAX had, or ever will have. Two of us (my coworker had the 24's & I had the 25's) put down 135 airplanes in that hour. As I had the bulk of the traffic (about 95 of those 135), I had both 25’s and 24L; I just had to find someone to follow who was landing on 24R. I was busier than a one-armed paper hanger, but it sure was fun! We worked more airplanes per position than any other TRACON. We were working about 2400 operations per day on 4 positions. Things changed a bit before I retired when someone in their infinite wisdom decided arrivals needed to be split from departures due to the length of time needed for certification. Arrivals took about 2 years and departures took about one. Splitting didn’t help, in fact, lengthened the time to certify on departures. 'Twas a great career and 12 years later I’m still looking for the adrenaline rush I would get working the rush!

Splitting didn’t help, in fact, lengthened the time to certify on departures." as I have no idea what you mean. please explain this in layman's terms.
@michaelhall91382 ай бұрын
We had 4 radar positions; basically a north arrival position worked the arrivals from the north and west, the north departure position worked the departures going north and west, the south arrival position worked the arrivals that came straight-in from the east and the arrivals that came in from south of the airport & the south departure position worked the departures going south and northeast. One needed to be certified on all 4 radar positions and the arrival positions were the most difficult and took longer. The north arrival position we called Stadium (for Dodger Stadium) and we called the south arrival position Downey ( for the city of Downey). Stadium worked a total of 4 inbound routes & Downey had 5 routes. Due to where LAX is geographically, Downey got about 75ish percent of the traffic, same with the departure sectors; most went south & northeast. It’s just easier to separate departing traffic than arriving. Think of it as cars arriving & departing at a sporting stadium. There are multiple exits going different directions, but only a few entrances (and parking spots) to the parking area.

Pro Tip 1: There's often a BIG difference between traffic on the upper and lower levels, especially with time-of-day. So on a recent morning when the upper level was clogged with departing business travelers -- maybe thirty minutes to get around the loop depending on how clever one is with lane selection -- I headed for the near-empty lower level (few arrivals early in the morning), dropped kiddo off at the Arrivals curb for his terminal, and in less than a minute he was up an escalator or elevator to where he needed to be. Pro Tip 2: The Sepulveda Tunnel used to be the secret passage for getting into LAX quickly from the south, but lately you can spend a half-hour on just the transition loop into the airport after you've finally made it through the tunnel. If you opted not to take Century Blvd and are now facing nothing but brake lights as you are about to enter the tunnel, move to the left lane which usually moves much faster with through traffic. But not to cut over to the right lanes at the last minute, as some discourteous/desperate drivers do. That would just put you on the uber-slow transition loop anyway. Instead, continue north on Sepulveda to the first right turn (W 98 St), and go east on it until a right turn onto Avion Dr. Right ahead of you will be a traffic signal for a right turn onto Century, just before the airport entrance and minus most of the backed up traffic on Sepulveda or Century. In heavy traffic, those three right turns can be much quicker than one "left" into the airport via the transition loop.

Nice video. I have two more things to add to this. For about a year now, when the weather is good, they will clear you for “the approach” for a certain runway (yes at 50 miles out). But they don’t say which kind of approach. This way, the pilot can pick if he or she wants to do an ILS or RNAV or even a visual approach. However, when the weather gets worse, they will assign the ILS specifically. Also, after the departure end of 25L/R and 24L/R, between the airport and the ocean, is a piece of grassland with roads, but no houses. This used to be a neighborhood. However, when these old jets started to fly out of LAX back in the 1950s and came over this neighborhood very low, they decided this was unsafe and the government bought all the houses and demolished the neighborhood. The streets were left behind. I believe this is now a nature reservation.

LAX right now is a hot mess on the ground, because of Southern California's legendarily infamous traffic. What I'm wondering is just how useful the new transit line will be, and just how much of a pain dragging more than carry-on luggage through everything will be... and what's more if it'll go anywhere useful. At least Atlanta, for all its faults, did transit right; they grafted MARTA right onto the west end of the terminal, where most airports stick the train station on the back of beyond... and then there's Schiphol, which didn't bother putting Metro underneath the airport when they could put a major main-line NS terminal there... that would be like running Amtrak through Dulles, only way better... but then, Americans and their cars... But as for airspace? LAX has an amazing setup. I mean, not only are you cleared for the approach 50 miles out, you *intercept the final approach course* up to THREE HUNDRED miles out... (ANJLL4 from outside DNERO)

The ground game at and around LAX is certainly not good, with no easy solution to the old sprawl. Even the long range transit plans call for a several seat ride to downtown or Hollywood, and the transit system has a lot to improve with rider safety. Major transit projects cost so much more in the US than anywhere else, especially in expensive coastal regions. But indeed I did notice on approach it felt like the flight descended really fast and the approach route was much faster than other major airports I’ve flown to.

The airside operations of LAX work very smoothly. The hassles of getting to your terminal or getting out of LAX are legendary. The traffic inside the terminal loop is better since they moved the Uber, Lyft, and taxi pickup area to the new "LAXit" site some distance away, but carrying your bags into a shuttle bus is a big hassle until they complete the people-mover. Some years ago, I missed several flights due to it taking almost an hour to travel the last mile or two into the LAX terminal loop, even at times when the rest of the Los Angeles traffic was light. @@noob.168you can still do that, but you have to go to a certain area to leave the airport

@@pontmercy8 Just take LAXit to the uber stand and you can leave the airport. The bus comes RIGHT OUTSIDE the arrivals area, so it is actually very easy. Those busses have racks so you can put all your luggage on there and then head to uber lyft area.
@JingJao2 ай бұрын
@@noob.168 I think that's for arrivals. But it is still very easy. Just take the bus to LAXit and there is an area for UBER and LYFT. Walk on down over there and take your taxi.

LAX is a passenger nightmare. Passengers should avoid LAX whenever possible. So many better and more convenient airports all across SoCal (BUR, LGB, SNA, ONT, SBA and more).

ATL is like the fake #1 airport because less than 15% of passengers actually begin or arrive at ATL as their final destination.

After finishing the video, I’m now super bothered by the pronunciation of Los Angeles that the narrator, most every Briton, and (some) non-American English speakers use.

Thankfully the French aren’t so bothered with how the English-speaking world pronounces Paris 😅

Doing numerous flights in and out of LAX as a passenger for as big as it is, it’s fairly easy to get in and out for the most part. It’s the inner parts the TSA that are a joke that slow everything down. It’s the long lines it’s all the inner workings of LAX that make LAX terrible.But as in flying in and out of that airport, I love the view. I love flying in over LA because you get such a view of how spread out the city is.

Did they forget to mention all the homless people sleeping inside the terminal entrance on the chairs and floors?
@cecilma31402 ай бұрын
When was that? Since 2020 LA legislated that (now playing this announcement incessantly in all terminal’s airside and landside): “LAX is closed to the general public 24/7”, only passengers, workers and drivers are allowed.
